  • DVD Thumbelina

Ranking just behind the best of animator Don Bluth's films (Anastasia and The Secret of NIMH), Thumbelina is a bubble-light version of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. The finger-sized heroine goes about the old-fashioned trials of trying to find a good man, but the film is clever enough to make it endearing for the 3-6 set and more than passable for adult viewers. Barry Manilow provides much of the song score, which helps immensely. The ballad "Let Me Be Your Wings" is as good as Disney's best. Carol Channing and Charo have a good ol' time with their songs too. The voice of Thumbelina is none other than Jodi Benson, who gave voice to Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid. --Doug Thomas

    Great Kid's Movie

i have loved this movie since i was a kid and i think it's sad thta children of this generation have no good cartoon movies to watch that don't have to do with animee. this movie is filled with songs and sweet characters. although not made by disney, this movie can still be wonderful for children. now being older, i still watch this movie from time to time and love it just as much as i did as a young kid. it's great!

    surprisingly good

I hadnt seen this before . Me in my forties , my kids 3 , 5 & 8 years old enjoyed the movie . The music is very good . It has a great moral " with hope , nothing is impossible " There are racial overtones to the characters that may not be suitable to sensitive individuals . Animation is softer than your classic disney . Spanish ( Charo-like ) & French accent characters (fun & loveable). Love conquers all.
Very young children may be frightened at certain parts .( barry manilow exec . producer , ...who knew ? )

A Classic for Children and Grown Ups

Don Bluth's Thumbelina is an inspiring story with gorgeous animation. Bluth, creator of The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, and The Land Before Time, as well as many other amazing animated films, got his start at Disney. Bluth then started his own production company. Right now, in 2005, his company is no more, but Bluth has left a tremendous body of works that will be enjoyed for generations.

Bluth's retelling of the Grimm Brothers fairy tale Thumbelina is enchanting. Thumbelina (voiced by Jodi Benson)is innocent and naiive; if adults can remember when they were that way too, once upon a time, it will enhance their enjoyment of the film. Thumbelina lives with her mother. She is lonely for a friend her own size. One fateful moonlit night, she meets the Fairy Prince Cornelius, and falls in love. Unfortunately, Thumbelina is kidnapped by Mama Toad (Charro) to be a singer in her troupe, and a wife for her horrible toad son.

Throughout her difficult journey and separation from her home, other well-meaning creatures try to tell Thumbelina what she should do and who she should be. Everyone wants to control her; no one wants to let her find her own path. Her only faithful friend is the charming Parisian swallow, Jacqimo, who gently encourages Thumbelina to never give up and follow her heart. Staying true to yourself and not caving in to the pressure of what others think you should do, and what they think is best for you, is difficult to do. This movie will strengthen anyone's resolve to resist anyone else trying to make them into something they don't feel they are meant to be.

The opening scenes of the swallow's flight high over Paris is breathtaking. Barry Manilow's songs are wonderful, absolutely wonderful. "Let Me Be Your Wings" is as good as Aladdin's "A Whole New World." The ending credits have charming montages of the characters, so watch the credits roll to the very end.

FernGully - The Last Rainforest DVD

Environmentally friendly animated film with a strong message that doesn't club anyone over the head--but it certainly can't be missed. Zak (voiced by Christian Slater) is a heavy-machine operator whose job is to push over any vegetation in his path. He's shrunken to wee size, however, when Crysta (Samantha Mathis), a fairy of the forest, not only finds him cute but wants him to see the results of his handiwork. They end up battling Hexxus, an evil force imprisoned in a tree, which now wants to destroy all of Ferngully. Robin Williams offers genuine comic relief as a bat named Batty Koda. Agreeable without making much impact, it's a piffle of a film for one that deals with such strong subject matter. --Keith Simanton More Info about this DVD

    Anastasia DVD

Stomping out their usual cuteness and carbon copying Disney's grand animation style to a T, directors Don Bluth and Gary Goldman (An American Tail) create a successful musical comedy from the story of the lost Russian princess. Adapting the story of imperialism and revolution is tricky, and subsequently the film's opening is weak. Once Anya (voiced by Meg Ryan, sung by Liz Callaway) is a teenager and on her own (suffering from some degree of amnesia), the film is quite pleasing though never refreshingly new.

Twentieth Century Fox's big-money gamble to horn in on Disney's realm is worthy. The songs, especially the recurrent "Once Upon a December," by Broadway team Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty are better than Disney's recent efforts. It's worth picking up the soundtrack. The... The Swan Princess (Special Edition) DVD

This excellent theatrical feature is loosely based on the Swan Lake story. Princess Odette, having been turned into a swan by a sorcerer's spell, is held captive at the enchanted lake with friends Jean-Bob the frog, Speed the turtle, and Puffin the bird. Along comes Prince Derek, who becomes involved in liberating her by taking on the villain. The movie has been criticized for being too similar to Sleeping Beauty, but once you're watching it--with its strong characters, entertaining vocal performances (John Cleese and Steven Wright are particularly funny), fine artwork, and action--such complaints are negligible. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

A Troll in Central Park DVD

Man, these people are giving this movie horrible reviews- I mean, yeah you might not love it at an older age, some might find it just disturbing...
However I used to watch this as a kid and loved this show so much!! At 15, I just happened to find it on Television, and I just had to stop and watch the show to think about old times, sitting at home on my couch all alone watching this show and drinking some cola... I think at least you should check it out for your kids- they should like it. More Info about this DVD

The Adventures of Tom Thumb & Thumbelina DVD

Hans Christian Andersen meets the Grimm Brothers in Disney's animated blending of two classics. Of course there are significant updates: Thumbelina (Jennifer Love Hewitt) doesn't need others to come to her aid; she rescues herself--and others. Between the evil circus sideshow owner who keeps her incarcerated until young adulthood, the Mole King (Peter Gallagher) who twice abducts her for marriage, and a scientifically inclined boy who traps both little people in test tubes, there is plenty of rescuing to be done. Tom Thumb (Elijah Wood), also kidnapped in infancy, had a happy childhood but sets out in search of kin. The small pair meet cute, bicker, fall in love, and, eventually, find their way back to their small village. The animation is a little flat, the songs fairly drippy, but the...
