DVD Slap Shot (25th Anniversary Special Edition)
Paul Newman and his Butch Cassidy director, George Roy Hill, made a very original comedy in this 1977 story of an over-the-hill player/coach (Newman) for a lousy hockey team who gets results when he teaches his players to get dirty. One of the most hilariously profane movies ever to come out of Hollywood, this is the kind of film that makes its own rules as it goes along. Newman is very good, and while Hill goes for the gusto in terms of capturing the violence of this world, his instinct for comedy has never been sharper. Great support from Strother Martin, Paul Dooley, and the rest. --Tom Keogh

Shots
Great hockey movie, The Hansons are weird in their own way. The coach is
all fighting.
"Trade me right _____ now!" and hang up.
This is the undisputed king of hockey films, but it's exposure probably suffered from being a hockey film. If this film's dialog had been set to a football theme, every man in America would have a copy under his pillow, but non-hockey guys often won't give it a chance. The overlapping dialog, the many complex characters, the solid soundtrack, the gallows humor and the manipulations all tie together to make this a great film. This film is hilarious, but it has grit that you don't see in most comedies. It's dark in the corners, like an old hockey arena. Almost every outdoor scene is overcast. The towns are dirty, like Northern towns are in the winter. It's a really cool movie.
That said the language is foul. I forgot how foul, after years of seeing it on TV, till I got the DVD and popped it in with my then-wife. It was painful for the first 20 minutes or so...then she left the room.
That said Slap Shot 2 is horrible and every copy needs to be burned ASAP.
The "Cup" Winner
Slapshot is one of the greatest sports movies ever made and certainly the best hockey movie ever made. It isn't just about winning games and goons fighting. It develops the human impact of playing low minor league hockey, how family and relationships are effected, and the life they live. I've seen it 20 times and will watch it 20 more.

Handsome young men whack each other in the face with sticks and learn about life in this enjoyably silly hockey movie. Rob Lowe stars as Dean Youngblood, an American rookie who's been given a shot on a Canadian Junior League hockey team. Sure, he can skate, but can he take a punch? This coming-of-age story is about learning the beauty of vicious hockey fights. No, really. Containing both young-bucks-in-the-locker-room shots and plenty of hockey violence, Youngblood is a surprisingly entertaining cupcake of a movie--there's not much nourishment, but it sure tastes good. Watch for Patrick Swayze as the team's leader and Keanu Reeves in his first film role as the French-Canadian goalie. The DVD's most entertaining feature is the option of watching Youngblood dubbed into... When it comes to the subject of community, David E. Kelley--the prolific writer-producer behind television's The Practice and Ally McBeal--falls somewhere on a continuum between directors Howard Hawks and Robert Benton. While Hawks's professional characters are bound by a knowledge of how to do what they do even if they don't know why, Benton's people, professional or not, have long ago substituted their own eccentric reasons for that elusive why. Thus we get the kind of in-house, oddball rituals sandwiched between passages of actual work on Ally, and the affectionately entangled personal and professional ties between small-town folks in Kelley's earlier TV series Picket Fences.
Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis created their popular toque-wearing, beer-swigging "Great White North" hosers Bob and Doug McKenzie on the great TV comedy show SCTV to fulfill a Canadian broadcasting regulation that required Canadian shows to have a certain amount of "Canadian content." Bob and Doug became so popular that they made a hit record (Take Off, with Geddy Lee, nasalist with the Canadian rock band Rush) and this Major Motion Picture--filmed in "Hoserama." Bob and Doug are the Cheech and Chong of beer, so the plot involves the boys's attempt to scam a free case of Elsinore beer from the brewery, which is run by a mad scientist Brewmeister Smith (Max von Sydow), who wants to rule the world, like all mad scientists do. Strange Brew's intoxicating blend of hops and... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Rick Moranis Director(s): Rick Moranis DVD Release Date: Released the 01 October 2002 Usually ships in 24 hours

You don't need to know anything about hockey to be moved by this hourlong documentary about one of the greatest upsets in sports history: the United States' defeat of the vaunted Russian Olympic hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The film recounts the David vs. Goliath matchup between the Americans (essentially a group of college kids molded into a team by coach Herb Brooks, also the U.S. hockey coach in the 2002 Olympic games) and the Russians, professionals who had won four straight Olympic golds. The story is retold in interviews with the people who lived it, including Brooks and several of the American players, sportscaster Al Michaels (who uttered the title line as the game ended), and key Russian players. Do You Believe in Miracles? is... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 08 January 2002 Usually ships in 24 hours
