DVD The One (Special Edition)
The One sets a martial arts milestone by pitting action star Jet Li against his greatest enemy: himself. This sci-fi thriller establishes a "multiverse" consisting of countless parallel universes, each populated by variants of every individual. Li plays a renegade from the Multiverse Agency, illegally traveling through "quantum tunnels" to eliminate all versions of himself until only two remain, each sharing the cumulative strength of their "parallel universe versions." This mumbo-jumbo inspires a variety of dazzling special effects, and director James Wong (with cowriter and fellow X-Files alumnus Glen Morgan) injects clever humor into the Matrix-derivative premise. Carla Gugino is wasted as the "good" Li's obligatory love interest, but The One will appeal to action fans with its fast-paced pursuit between the evil Li and two agents (Delroy Lindo, Jason Statham) assigned to stop his trans-universal killing spree. It's a one-gimmick movie, best enjoyed with your brain in neutral. --Jeff Shannon
I am a fan of Jet Li and his movies. This is one(pardon the pun) of my favorites. Excellent fight scenes and a great plot. I liked this movie very much. It's definitely one(pardon the pun, again) of the best in my opinion.
I liked it
Mostly everyone gave this movie poor ratings and I'm thinking to myself, what did you think it would be? Did you really think that it would be as good as the terminator? Yeah right.
I am a big Jet Li fan and this movie delivers what I thought that it would. Great special effects and awesome martial arts fights. No, it isn't no masterpiece. But did you really think that it would be? I hope not, so don't be so harsh on it.
The plot is very original and the martial art fights are great. It isn't the best Jet Li movie but it's still a good movie.
The plot is about multiuniverses, meaning that there are replicas of each human being in each of the universes. But one replica wishes to destroy every replica of himself but one isn't as easy as the others. The end's great and the fights are great fun. If you're a Jet Li fan like me, then buy it, if not, rent it as you'll be in for some fun.
The one to rent or watch on a rainy Saturday afternoon
The One tries to copy hit movies like the Matrix and Terminator with eye-popping special effects and non-stop action in futuristic settings. Unfortunately the producers who were probably anxious to make a franchise around Jet Li they forgot about that critical element that makes a franchise work. THE STORY.
Without a plot, the One becomes a derivative ninety-minute video game sequence posing as an action movie. The premise of an evil guy killing his almost all his alternate selves to become more powerful falls apart because he only stops at 128. According to the story, he only has one more self to kill to become the "ONE". Since he has the having all the strength and speed of the other selves, this should be easy...NOT! If you follow simple physics or just plain logic from oh, Star Trek or Sliders, this plot device would never work. The Universe is endless; there would be TRILLIONS of other selves for him to kill. 128 selves wouldn't even scratch the surface of alternate realities and alternate selves in the KNOWN universe. But the movie goes on in spite of this humongous plothole.
To stop Jet Li, are two police officers that patrol the realities. (I won't mention the actor's names because they probably don't want this crappy movie listed on their resumes) They're dressed up in Matrix gear (Black leather, black everything else Big cool shiny guns) and they drive cool vintage cars like a 1969 Camaro SS and 1965 Mustang. Steals directly from the Matrix don't it when Morpheus, Neo and Trinity stepped out of that 1966 Lincoln Continental with Suicide doors don't it? Even the title the ONE is just NEO backwards. But I'll stop ranting about how this film steals from the Matrix. They manage to capture him but he has help from a woman and an exploding rat. The one goes on to escape to the final alternate reality to kill his last self, a butt kicking LA Sheriff.
Lots of carnage and explosions ensue for the next 55 or so minutes of the One. The black cop dies (as in all action movies) Good Jet Li's wife is killed by evil Jet Li so that Good Jet Li has a convoluted reason to kick bad guy's butt. They travel to a factory (Straight out of T2) to duke it out. Good Jet Li defeats bad Jet Li before they're transported to the reality police station. In the end The evil Jet Li is captured and sent off to his prison where he fights CGI prisoners on a CGI background. The surviving reality cop transports good Jet Li to the past to reunite with his dead wife before she dies. WITW???? Hold on, according to the screenplay these guys Police REALITY not TIME. Both are two different constructs of physics each with their own laws. Wouldn't sending back the good Jet Li into the past would collapsed the space-time continuum doing MORE damage than the Evil Jet Li's quest to become the "ONE" Oh well, Hollywood wants a happy ending.
Jet Li looks great doing his karate the special effects are decent (Bullet time CGI and lots of stuff blows up good) The cinematography is straight out of T2 using lots of blue lights and shadows at night. But because the facts of this science fiction story don't follow the laws of Science, the whole story falls into a black hole. Worse, the movie steals ideas from two far superior films to tell its story. If you are in desperate need of an action movie fix and there's nothing else left in the video store rent this. If you want to see a good action movie get Equilibrium, T2 or the Matrix.
Let's face it: No one is usually checking a Jet Li movie for the verbal sparring. In Kiss of the Dragon, Chinese undercover agent Li chops his way through Paris after he's framed in some sketchily defined drug sting operation. The fight sequences are tough and quite brutal, and the over-the-top finale is arguably worth the price of admission, wherein an implacable Li takes on the entire Paris Police Bureau, working his way up toward police chief Tchéky Karyo's office through cops, a pair of peroxide-blond twin henchmen, and a whole class of kung fu cadets. Co-screenwriter Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita) should know by now what makes for a nifty genre piece, but the woeful dialogue is a shame, and there aren't nearly enough action sequences to get your blood... Cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak, the cameraman behind Speed, Lethal Weapon 4, and The Devil's Advocate, makes his directorial debut with a lively but by-the-numbers film that mixes Hong Kong action pyrotechnics with gritty urban gang drama. Jet Li stars as a jailed cop named Han who hightails it to Oakland, California, to seek revenge for the gang-related murder of his brother. What he finds, though, is a fierce war between his father's syndicate and that of Isaak O'Day (Delroy Lindo) for control of the city's precious waterfront land, as both groups are trying to make a deal with a corrupt football-team owner to build a new stadium. The political shenanigans are basically just a backdrop for the kick-ass action, and to give Li a number of enemies to lock limbs... The intriguing cross-pollination of rap and kung-fu continues with Cradle 2 the Grave, co-starring high-profile rapper DMX and Hong Kong superstar Jet Li. Master thief Fait (DMX) hits a diamond exhange but comes away with a bag of black gems of mysterious origin. When a crime kingpin steals the gems from Fait, an international arms dealer kidnaps Fait's beloved daughter--and Fait can only get her back with the help of Su (Li), a Taiwanese intelligence agent tracking the gems himself. A summary of the plot doesn't do Cradle 2 the Grave justice; while the basic story elements suggest a dozen generic action flicks, the cast (including Anthony Anderson, Gabrielle Union, and Kelly Hu) has genuine charisma and the movie layers action on top of action to strong effect. ... Take the art direction and set design from The Crow and Batman. Add a male-bonding element reminiscent of The Killer or Hard-Boiled. Stir in a plot line about some top-secret near-invincible bionic-man superwarriors taking over the drug trade in Hong Kong, with only one man who can stop them. Season with a high body count, lots of explosions and running gun battles, and spectacular hand-to-hand fight sequences. Top off with a soupçon of cheesy comic relief and a generous helping of atrocious dubbing. Bake for too long, then remove from oven and allow to cool until thoroughly stale. The result: Black Mask. Sure, it's a preposterous recipe (bet you didn't know that LED readouts will show up on an X-ray), but it's stylishly prepared and presented,...
