DVD Seems Like Old Times
An original Neil Simon screenplay makes Seems Like Old Times rise above what would otherwise be a forgettable comedy love triangle. Goldie Hawn (Private Benjamin) plays a good-hearted defense lawyer married to Ira, a politically ambitious district attorney played by Charles Grodin (Midnight Run). The craziness of their everyday lives becomes even more ridiculous when ex-husband Chevy Chase is framed for a bank robbery and seeks refuge with the woman he could never get over. Hawn hides the love of her life under her husband's nose as Chase tries to clear his name. Hawn tries to protect him and Grodin just tries to keep from going insane. A slapstick romance that's very often hit-and-miss, the dialogue saves this comic farce and provides wonderful moments between the three stars. Seems Like Old Times also has going for it winning supporting players and some half a dozen drooling, unruly dogs. --Robert Lane
Foul Play is a fun film that prepares you for the hilarity and shenaningans of "Seems Like Old Times". This time, Chevy and Goldie are joined by Charles Grodin, the master of dry humor. Even the bit characters are hysterical, like Chester, the Indians, Fred and Aurora. One of the best comedies ever!
A Very Cute Movie.
I had Seems Like Old Times on video tape and I think it is a very cute movie with some very funny scenes! It stars Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn from Foul Play. It is a screwball type comedy about a man played by Chevy Chase who gets mixed up in a robbery after he is forced to drive the getaway car and he tries to get his ex wife played by Goldie Hawn who is a lawyer to help him and he winds up hiding in her and her stuffy new husband's (Charles Grodin) house. Besides Chase, Hawn and Groden, I also liked Yvonne Wilder, the actress who played the sassy housekeeper, she was hilarious!

I have been looking for this movie on DVD forever and was so happy to find it on Amazon.com. It's a classic and timeless; the chemistry between Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn is great and other than Foul Play, the best movie they have both been in, together or apart. Charles Grodin is great too. I was disappointed with the extras but finding the movie itself was enough!
Not short on murder, mayhem, or any other screwball '70s conventions, Foul Play is a wonderful vehicle for Goldie Hawn. She plays Gloria, a librarian "ready to take a chance again," who ends up the target of an assassination ring. Chevy Chase, fresh off of Saturday Night Live, does the closest thing to real acting he would ever achieve (okay, maybe Fletch) as Tony, the cop assigned to protect Gloria. Dudley Moore made an indelible impression on American audiences as Stanley Tibbets, a surprisingly kinky symphony conductor. Despite the presence of hack director Arthur Hiller, this hybrid comedy-thriller works most of the time as pleasant faux Hitchcock. Gene Wilder is a book editor who is relaxing by taking a cross-country train ride. Then he gets caught up in a murder--and becomes a suspect. It's up to him to prove his own innocence. As noted, the script, by Colin Higgins, owes a big debt to Alfred Hitchcock; but the mystery isn't all that mysterious and the comedy isn't all that hilarious--at least not until Richard Pryor shows up, which is at least halfway through the film. Things definitely pick up from there. Jill Clayburgh, as the love interest, is merely along for the train ride. Art imitates life in this romantic comedy, which casts Reynolds and Hawn as a successful Hollywood screenwriting team. Their harmonious working and romantic relationship goes south when they decide to get married after years of living together. Written by and based on the lives of writers Barry Levinson and Valerie Curtin, the film is a decidedly bittersweet affair: after all, Levinson and Curtin got married, then divorced, just like the characters in the movie. Consequently, there's less real humor than kidding as the relationship develops cracks, chinks, and leaks, before foundering altogether. Goldie accidently saves a middle-eastern politician from a gunshot,and is suddenly thrusted into the media,becomes a media darling,and hired on by the U.S. Govt.,who try to "sell" her(without her knowledge) to the man she helped save,to become one of his MANY wives,in exchange for some Nuclear bombs. Not only does this film take shots at the stupidity of the media,and the shaddy dealings of our own Government, it is an abosolutly funny funny movie! The teaming of Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn would seem to have been sure-fire casting, but Housesitter's writing is never strong enough to sustain it and the film's hit-and-miss quality has more misses than hits. Martin plays an architect who builds his dream house for his high school sweetheart (Dana Delany), then surprises her with a marriage proposal--both of which she rejects.
