  • DVD The January Man

It's New Year's Eve and a serial killer stalks the streets of New York, looking for his next victim. Under pressure from the public and the press, Police Commissioner Frank Starkey (Harvey Keitel) and the mayor (Rod Steiger) reinstate Starkey's brother Nick (Kevin Kline) in the force to track down the murderer. Nick was pressured to resign some years back and bad blood remains between him and his brother; almost immediately he rubs his superior (Danny Aiello) the wrong way when he turns his office into a sort of beatnik den. Flanked by his eccentric buddy (Alan Rickman) and the mayor's daughter (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), Starkey goes about running the killer down his own way. This film is a confused muddle--not funny enough to be a comedy, not suspenseful enough to be a taut cop thriller, and without enough chemistry to be a romantic drama. The excellent cast is adrift in a screenplay that throws in everything but the kitchen sink; Keitel, Steiger, and Aiello go completely apoplectic every time they're onscreen together (which should please fans of over-the-top acting). The first screenplay by John Patrick Shanley after his Oscar win for Moonstruck is hardly cut of the same cloth. --Jerry Renshaw

    Review(s): DVD The January Man
A wonderful updating of the Sherlock Holmes Persona

This is a very funny movie while at the same time, it's very riveting. You root for the good guys, you love it when the bad guys get theirs'. Kline's character is a mixture of tough love and eccentric genius. He and his love interests play well off each other. All the supporting stars around Kline do a top rate job and leave the circle unbroken. Allan Rickman is really funny as a way offbeat artist who gets roped in to helping Kline figure out where and when the serial killer is going to strike. The final scene between the killer and Kline is somewhat slapstickish but also a choreographed ballet that would make the old silent stars proud. I've watched this movie many times and I never get tired of it. I know many of the lines by heart but I can always find something small and wonderful I missed the time before. I hope Kline and this group do more of the same. This movie would love a sequel! As Allan Rickman's character, Ed, says, "I'm going to go and try to paint something original." This movie paints an original and fresh twist to the Sherlock Holmes theme and other favorite whodunit plot points as well.

    Great Story Line!

I became reacquainted with "January Man" recently and forgot what a good film it is. With Oscar winners, Kevin Kline, Susan Sarandon and an excellent supporting cast including Rod Steiger, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Danny Aiello and Harvey Keitel and a great script, director Pat Connor had an easy task of producing a great film. With a touch of comic relief between the suspense and the strong rivalry between brothers (Kline and Keitel), Keitel is forced by the Mayor (Steiger) to rehired his brother (Kline) as the lead investigator to find and stop a serial killer. Time is running out and the suspense builds. Like the Bone Collector, the January Man will challenge the viewer until the end. You'll find the January Man more challenging to solve than most mysteries, but keep in mind the clues are in front of you, including its title. If you enjoy a good mystery, January Man is worth the time. Rated R for a sex scene, brief nudity and violence.

Mark your Calendar..... good all year 'round..

sure, no car chases, no explosions....but an interesting plot with about a half-dozen twists...i first saw this film in spain in 1989....(in english, somehow) and have probably viewed it twice a year since. scores of friends (and my now grown son and daughter) have also found themsleves enamored of it.
rickman's turn is a far cry from his 'die hard' and 'quiqley down under' roles; kline is brilliant kline....no wonder he finally got an ocar for 'a fish called wanda'....allieo is just great, and steiger is, well, vintage stieger.
harvey keitel is semi-controlled sibling rivalry entrapped..the tension is palpable...susan sarandon is the tortured fatale that holds it together; mastrantonio's 'in a hundred years, we'll all be dead' has been my mantra ever since.
the tape's finally worn out. i gladly paid for the dvd...
would someone get me a cup of coffee, please? preferably an espresso?

    Mesmer DVD

...okay, I am biased. I love everything Alan Rickman has done. I did do investigation of Mesmer before watching the movie in order to know what type of character he was portraying. The entire subject was intreguing. It brings to light the inadequancies of medicine during this time. The lack of common sense is appalling. BLEEDING people??? I don't think so. He brought to light the connection between a person's body and mind. Making them work together. The blindness of Maria Theresa, obviously a result of her fathers physical abuse of her at an early age, was sad because he could have cured her, but she was taken away by the money grubbers too soon. Yes, I was enthralled and hated to see it end. More Info about this DVD

    Blow Dry DVD

Despite a gifted Anglo-American cast, Blow Dry strikes an uneasy balance between sentiment and camp. It aims for the same sort of high-wire act that Strictly Ballroom and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert pulled off so effortlessly, but melodrama wins the day. The comic moments are suitably over-the-top (as expected in a film about dueling hairdressers), but rarely as amusing as intended. The relationships between barbershop owner Phil (Alan Rickman), ex-wife Shelley (Natasha Richardson), and Sandra (Rachel Griffiths), "the other woman," could be more fully developed but are affecting nonetheless.

The setting is West Yorkshire. The event that brings them together is the British National Hairdressing Championships. Phil initially resists the urge to compete as it... More Info about this DVD

    Truly, Madly, Deeply DVD

Truly Madly Deeply is an intelligent, moving, and deeply funny story about love and death. Nina (Juliet Stevenson), a scatterbrained professional translator, has lost the love of her life, Jamie (Die Hard's Alan Rickman). As her life (and her flat) slowly falls to pieces, she's inundated by an endless stream of repair men and eligible suitors. But rather than go on with life, Nina dwells on her dead love, slumped at her piano, endlessly playing half of a Bach duet. Then, in a truly magical sequence, his cello suddenly joins her melody ... and Jamie's back from the dead.

At first it's bliss. (Think of the superficially similar blockbuster Ghost--only with real people instead of pretty faces Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze.) But Nina gradually realizes it's a... More Info about this DVD

    Dark Harbor DVD

Like many, probably most, people checking out this DVD, I got it because Alan Rickman is in it and I often (though not always) enjoy watching his performances. From the perspective of watching Rickman practicing the craft of acting (I know that sound god-awful pretentious), I was not disappointed. This movie is almost like a play with 3 performers. The performances are almost entirely what carries the film -- settings, props, cinematography, are secondary compared to most films. The script calls for the performances to be ambiguous -- appearances are always deceiving, and it was interesting to see how the actors achieved this.

The DVD includes a commentary by the director. Basically, you can watch the movie with a voice-over by the director about how scenes were done,... More Info about this DVD
