  • DVD Independence Day (Single Disc Widescreen Edition)

In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom Keogh

Review(s): DVD Independence Day (Single Disc Widescreen Edition)
Hey why the heck do people diss this film?

What the heck?!? This movie is awesome! you guys who criticise it are really stupid and who's the idiot who said Mars Attacks is more realistic? What kind of an idiot are you?!? Anyone who disses this movie cuz "A simple computer virus can't stop aliens" YOU HAVE NO CREATIVITY!!! Go and kill yourselves you morons!!! We true movie fans will go and enjoy this true classic that was a box-office hit and you losers who dissed this film can go watch crappy films like Mars attacks!!!

    Fun silly action movie

Ya, it's silly, but so are so many other movies. Terminator is silly, but it's still fun and exciting. Many good movies are silly. It's a fun movie. It's the kind of movie that you can have a good time watching.

You don't have to think about it. It's not emotional or powerful, but its fun.

If you want fun sci-fi movie, watch it.

If you want Citizen Kane or The Godfather watch Citizen Kane or The Godfather.

Despite problems, this is a FUN movie...

This review is for those who are not particularily SiFi fans and have not seen the movie...

The CGI in this movie is truely exceptional (!); the plot well thought out; and the cast, top notch. The general story line of an alien invasion of earth is presented in a plausable way. Aliens invade earth, coordinating their attack by hovering their gigantic ships over every major city on Earth. When they are all in position, all heck breaks loose and none of Earths defences are effective against them (they have force fields surrounding the massive ships and smaller fighters). Less plausable are some of the situations the main characters find themselves in... like Will Smith, a Marine Corps fighter pilot, who is soooo good he can also master flying a helicopter to search for his girl friend, and fly an alien spacecraft to the mother ship near the moon to download a virus into the mother-ships computer that will disable the shields around their ships; the President of the U.S. flying a fighter to attack the aliens after the Vice President and cabinet have been destroyed (?); etc. That having been mentioned, even these contrived 'fill-ins' for the plot flow are not a great distraction to the fun. The movie is action packed and moves quickly. There are some memorable lines in the movie that are easy to pick out and a spattering of Will Smith brand humor throughout the film that adds to the enjoyment.

If there is anyone out there who has not seen this movie, rent or buy it!

    Armageddon DVD

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid- fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's... More Info about this DVD

    Twister DVD

Twister was a mega-million-dollar blockbuster--helmed by a director (Dutchman Jan de Bont) hot off another scorcher hit (Speed)--that flaunted state-of-the-art digital effects and featured a popular leading actress (Helen Hunt) who would win an Academy Award for her next film (As Good As It Gets). But ask anybody who's seen it and they'll tell you who the real star of Twister is: the cow. Not to give anything away, but the cow is one of those inspired little touches (like, say, Bronson Pinchot's career-making cameo in Beverly Hills Cop) that adds a touch of personality to a gigantic Hollywood production. The story is blown out the window after an impressive prologue in which Hunt's character, as a little girl, witnesses her daddy being sucked into a... More Info about this DVD

    I, Robot (Widescreen Edition) DVD

As paranoid cop Del Spooner, Will Smith (Independence Day, Men in Black) displays both his trademark quips and some impressive pectoral muscles in I, Robot. Only Spooner suspects that the robots that provide the near future with menial labor are going to turn on mankind--he's just not sure how. When a leading roboticist dies suspiciously, Spooner pursues a trail that may prove his suspicions. Don't expect much of a connection to Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction stories; I, Robot, the action movie, isn't prepared for any ruminations on the significance of artificial intelligence. This likable, efficient movie won't break any new ground, but it does have an idea or two to accompany its jolts and thrills, which puts it ahead of most recent action flicks.... Jurassic Park (Widescreen Collector's Edition) DVD

Steven Spielberg's 1993 mega-hit rivals Jaws as the most intense and frightening film he'd ever made prior to Schindler's List, but it was also among his weakest stories. Based on Michael Crichton's novel about an island amusement park populated by cloned dinosaurs, the film works best as a thrill ride with none of the interesting human dynamics of Spielberg's Jaws. That lapse proves unfortunate, but there's no shortage of raw terror as a rampaging T-rex and nasty raptors try to make fast food out of the cast. The effects are still astonishing (despite the fact that the computer-generated technology has since been improved upon) and at times primeval, such as the sight of a herd of whatever-they-are scampering through a valley. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

Men in Black (Deluxe Edition) DVD

This imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human--hold up their end splendidly. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD
