  • DVD The Baby Whisperer (Vol. 1)

Nicknamed "the Baby Whisperer" by clients because of her uncanny ability to calm infants, Britain's baby expert Tracy Hogg offers her unique infant communication approach in this 74-minute program geared primarily to parents of newborns. With more than 25 years of experience as a registered nurse, lactation consultant, and childcare instructor, Hogg shares her no-nonsense advice with quiet authority in a soothing, reassuring manner. Two dozen short segments or "scenes" cover a myriad of baby basics such as feeding, swaddling, and sleep issues. Interspersed are several Q&A sessions that "listen in" on Hogg's real-life parent support groups as a handful of fledging mums and dads ask pertinent questions and wait for Hogg's brief yet satisfactory answers. For visual learners, the film is an excellent tutorial offering step-by-step diapering, breastfeeding, and bathing techniques. It tries to cover many subjects well enough to help first-time parents gain confidence and perspective. For more comprehensive coverage of typical infant problems (excessive crying, sleepless nights, etc.) and their solutions, Hogg's book is recommended as a complementary companion. --Lynn Gibson

Review(s): DVD The Baby Whisperer (Vol. 1)
    Forget the DVD

Forget the DVD, get the book instead. There's no real help in the DVD. In fact, very little of the book is covered in the DVD. It explains the EASY acronym, but no help on how to implement it, what to do if you have problems with it, or even cheezy acted out examples (like they show of a couple coming home from the hospital). It's a terrible DVD. I'm giving it 1 star solely for those who want some VERY basic advice.

    Read the book instead

While Tracey Hogg has some wonderful advice in her book - of the same title - about how to interact with your newborn, the video seems to gloss right it. It seemed like whole chapters were presented in mere minutes and important sections were left out. Plus, the sections that featured questions from real parents seemed canned and corny. All this being said, the book is terrific. Skip the video - read the book instead.

Watch before your baby is born

Purchase before your baby is born. If your baby is already here, don't buy this video, perhaps if you can find the time, the book may be helpful to read. This video details certain topics, but brushes over some of the more important topics like SLEEPING! Tracy Hogg makes a comment about a 2nd video which details things like sleep, however, I've been unable to find that video.

The Happiest Baby on the Block DVD DVD

Dr. Karp applied common sense to the "problem" of crying babies that most new parents face, by borrowing from traditions being used around the world to calm babies down as if you had "flipped a switch." He acknowledges the existence of a 'fourth trimester', i.e. the first three months of the baby's life and the need to use techniques to make the baby feel as in the mother's womb to calm him/her down, appealing to their calm reflex.

These techniques are summarized as the five S's: Swaddling (very tight, to resemble the tight environment of the uterus), Side or Stomach position (otherwise known as the football hold), Shushing (as loud as the baby cries), Swinging (making the head jiggle slightly, to replicate the mom's movements with the baby in her tummy) and Sucking (with your finger,... Baby Time - First Days Home: Keeping Your Baby Healthy & Happy DVD

There's a lot to remember when taking care of a newborn these days: from car seats to colic, from circumcision care to crib safety. Dividing its information into 10 chapters (easily referenced by numbering in the right-hand corner), First Days Home covers baby's appearance, breastfeeding and formula, sleeping, crying, bathing, diapering, health and safety for baby, mom's recovery (hemorrhoids, discharges, and other fun stuff), and family relations. This 56-minute primer can't possibly have the details and depth of a book on the subject but makes the perfect summary for Dad or a babysitter, or a refresher course for a second-time mom. Chapters range in length from 2 to 9 minutes and cover all the basics, most importantly when to call the doctor for either baby or Mom and how to... More Info about this DVD

Baby's First Months...What Do We Do Now (2003) DVD

Our family has the video version of this DVD. Here is the review for it:
Overall, this video is absolutely excellent for any mother who wants to learn the basics of Baby care. It devotes a reasonable amount of time to breastfeeding, and does show a lot of actual breastfeeding footage (which many feel is inappropriate for husbands and children to see).
The only real problem with the video are the scare tactics that they use to promote vaccinations, such as children in the hospital. The vaccine section bothers me, not only because of the scare tactics, but also because everyone in the whole video appears to be rich, EXCEPT for the parents of the children in the vaccination portion, which appeared to be very poor. I would recommend that parents read the book Vaccination: The... More Info about this DVD
