DVD Anne Of Green Gables - The Continuing Story
In a departure from L.M. Montgomery's book series, this third TV movie jumps ahead to World War I and puts Anne and her beloved Gilbert smack in the middle of it. Instead of marrying Gilbert after her teaching days--as she does in the books--Anne spends a disillusioning year with him in New York City, and then the couple quickly marries before the good doctor ships out to France. (In the book Rilla of Ingleside, Anne's sons go to war and her youngest daughter is separated from her sweetheart.) Impetuous as ever, Anne joins the Red Cross and crosses the pond to track down her husband when his letters are returned unread. What follows is an adventure that takes her through battle zones--where the bodies pile up faster than you can say Saving Private Ryan--and on to London with a half-orphaned baby, her best friend's injured husband, and a tangle of international intrigue. Fans of the 10-book series may balk at the divergences and the fact that very little time is spent on Prince Edward Island. But the book's unrestrained romanticism and unapologetic sentimentality remain intact, as well as the surviving cast of the prior two movies, most notably Megan Follows as Anne and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert. This movie, produced in 2000, clocks in at 185 minutes and is suitable for ages 9 and older. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Review(s): DVD Anne Of Green Gables - The Continuing Story
Very Disappointing
As a child, my mother and I sat and watched the original Anne of Green Gables too many times to count; we both loved it so much. So, when it was announced that they were doing another sequel to the movie, we were both excited. However; as we were expecting it to be as close to the original book as the previous movies were, we were both grievously disappointed and had to force ourselves to continue to watch it to the bitter end.
This movie has none of the charm and none of the warmth of the original. In fact, it is such a departure from "Anne of Green Gables" that it really doesn't seem like part of Anne's story at all. Every action seems out of character for all involved and the storyline is too ludicrous to be belived. Even if this had been a movie that was separate from "Anne of Green Gables" this movie would not be worth seeing at all. There is absolutely nothing about this movie to recommend it to anyone, even for an Anne fan like myself. It's downright boring.
If you want a wonderful story, a more believable story, and a more heart-warming story, read the books that take place after the original movies: "Anne of Avonlea", "Anne of Windy Poplars", "Anne's House of Dreams", "Anne of Ingleside", "Rainbow Valley", and "Rilla of Ingleside"
dissapointed to say the least
I remember watching the Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea movies as a child from start to finish and then immediately rewinding them to start again. This movie is an intirely different story. Not only was it a far cry from the book version, I found it to be incredibly insulting. The anti-American sediment found throughout the movie is something that I took to heart and I belive that Kevin Sullivan did a wonderful job at alienating much of his audience by the thoughtless comments made in this film. I have about as much respect for him now, as he has for half of the people who have supported him by buying his movies. I will never buy another one of his films and unfortunatly, this is a movie that I will never share with my own children.
Disappointed
I must say that I was disappointed in this third installment of the Anne Of Green Gables movies. I too was hoping for a more romantic wedding for Anne and Gil, but I was VERY dissapointed in the negative light that Americans were portrayed. I believe I counted five references to Americans as being cowards for not joining WWI "soon" enough, and if that was'nt bad enough, there was a reference to Americans "not having a lot going on upstairs" in other words, we Americans are not very smart. How insulting. If Kevin Sullivan wants to keep making movies that people will adore for years to come, he might want to consider not insulting "The Yanks" that so graciously butter his bread by buying his movies. I ADORE Anne Of Green Gables and Anne Of Avonlea. They are my absolute favorites of all time. I admire Kevin Sullivans ability to make wonderful movies for people of all ages. He's very gifted. I just wish he had'nt painted Americans the way he did in the last Anne movie. I bought it, and will probably never watch it again. It's a shame.

This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her," answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative... A lot of reviewers gave bad reviews of this movie thinking it was the dreadful third movie The Continuing Story when it's really the delightful second movie, in Canada it's called Anne of Green Gables the Sequel while in the USA it's Anne of Avonlea and I believe when it was first shown on TV in the USA it was called Anne of Green Gables the Sequel but for some reason they changed the title in the USA. I believe that the confusion of reviewers with Anne of Green Gables the Sequel and Anne Of Green Gables The Continuing Story was because Amazon by mistake or computer glitch had shown the cover for and description for The Continuing Story under the title Anne of Green Gables the Sequel but I see that Amazon has since discovered and fixed that mistake. Anyway Anne of Green Gables/Anne of... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Stefan Scaini DVD Release Date: Released the 14 September 2001 This item is currently not available.

This DVD included the first two episodes of "Road to Avonlea" the TV series, or better known in the U.S. as "Avonlea", as aired on the Disney Channel in the 1990's. A touching and family-friendly series about a little rich girl who moves to Prince Edward Island to live with her relatives when her father is accused of embezzlement in his own company. The adventures that this little girl Sara Stanley has with her cousins, (the "King" family) are hilarious and heart-warming! This is definately worth checking out!!
