DVD The Man from Snowy River
A conventional boy-and-his-horse story set against the red rocks of remote Australian mountains. (If there's a wide-screen edition, grab it. The scenery is one of the movie's strongest features.) Tom Burlinson is Jim Craig, a young man left stranded after his father's death who is struggling to save the family farm. He proves his manhood during a hair-raising hunt over the wooded slopes in search of an escaped stallion. The great, grizzled, Australian character actor Jack Thompson (the idealistic lawyer in Breaker Morant) is the tough, older horseman who takes the lad under his wing. The director, George Miller (not to be confused with the action-master who made the Mad Max films) allows costar Kirk Douglas to mug and grimace and prance far too much in a duel role as a pair of lovable old coots who hate each other's guts. Luckily, one of the coots has a handsome daughter (Sigrid Thornton, an Elizabeth McGovern-type with grit), who also has a way with horses. So it isn't all rocks and pine trees. --David Chute

I loved this movie the first time I saw it at the theatre low these many years ago. It has just the right amount of action and romantic interest, and pulls you into the story so you must watch it, then leaves you wanting for more at the end. I loved the "Mountain Pony" who can keep up with the Brumbies, and the "Homeless" cow on the dinner menu. This one you can watch and enjoy.
Just a great movie
This is one of my wife's favorite movies. There are a couple instances of mild language, a little drunkenness and a little violence. Some of the music is a bit anachronistic. But, those things are easy to overlook because the movie is so enjoyable.

In the mountainous high country above the Australian bush, wild horses run free: Australians call them wild "brumbies." Tom Selleck plays Matthew Quigley, the cowboy hero in this traditional Western, set very untraditionally in Australia. After some macho silliness in the opening minutes, the story settles into a surprisingly evocative tale of Quigley, a sharpshooter who had come to the country to work for a land baron (Alan Rickman) and who is on the mend after a brutal attack. In the company of a woman (Laura San Giacomo) abused by that same baron, Quigley gets his strength and his shooting skills back while healing in the midst of aboriginal people as well as some stunning Australian settings.
