DVD Muddy Waters - Can't Be Satisfied
There could hardly be a better subject for a documentary than arguably the greatest bluesman of the last century, and this look at the life, times, and music of McKinley "Muddy Waters" Morganfield doesn't disappoint. Coproduced and codirected by Robert Gordon, the 54-minute documentary is a nice companion piece to Gordon's book of the same name. It includes some bio material, tracing Waters's evolution from a sharecropping acoustic folk singer to a sharp-dressing, Chicago-based leader of one of the greatest electric bands ever, along with reminiscences and accolades from friends, family, and fellow musicians like Keith Richards, Bonnie Raitt, and Buddy Guy. There's music, too, of course, but if the program has a drawback, it's that there are no complete performances of the deep, dirty blues--"Hoochie Coochie Man," "Mannish Boy," and so on--that earned him immortality. Then again, there are innumerable recordings, including several "best ofs," to address that problem. --Sam Graham
Great content, very interesting. This is for the serious blues lover, curious about the late, great Muddy's life. It is not a concert footage DVD, although there are a few clips. It's a fabulous tribute, told in a biographical manner- truly enjoyable!! If you are a big fan of McKenzie "Muddy", you will *LOVE* this!
another great documentary
i just purchaset this & the howlin wolf story & john lee hooker thats my story. it's about time the industry started putting this great stuff out.i give them all five stars i just wish they were longer (less than an hour)except the john lee hooker 90min.the muddy gives us a great deal of information on the kind of man he was and his style if you like muddy this is worth having.
Great Companion for the Book
This DVD was the perfect compliment to the book of the same name. While more live footage would have been nice, there is plenty out there to be had. Great historical info as well as interviews with the ones who knew him. Must have for Blues fans of all stripes.
What better way to cap off 2003, the "Year of the Blues," than with this eminently watchable documentary about Chester A. Burnett, better known as Howlin' Wolf? Arguably second only to Muddy Waters among the Mississippi Delta singers who traveled north and pioneered urban electric blues (their supposed rivalry is the subject of one of this DVD's bonus features), Wolf was a big, imposing man with an inimitable, booming voice and a lasting influence on generations of rock & rollers--all of which comes across in the 90-minute film. Not only do we get a history of his life (told by family members, musical associates like longtime guitarist Hubert Sumlin, and Wolf himself) that's far more entertaining than the norm for this genre, we also get some history of the blues in general. And not only... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Chester Burnett DVD Release Date: Released the 04 November 2003 Usually ships in 1 to 3 weeks

Unearthed some 40 years after the fact, this has to be one of the finest blues collections ever assembled on video. Thanks to a couple of young promoters who brought the musicians to Europe--where they were treated with a good deal more respect and dignity than in America--we get an extraordinary lineup of bluesmen and women: Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Sippie Wallace... the list goes on. Their concert performances (several in stagy but effective down-home settings) before a rather formal but appreciative German audience have them playing in some cool combinations (T-Bone Walker backing Memphis Slim, Otis Rush with Junior Wells), even introducing one another (Williamson on guitarist Lonnie Johnson, an elder statesman on the tour: "A very nice... Three songs by Howlin' Wolf are the highlight of this second set of blues performances recorded in the 1960s, when an extraordinary lineup of musicians (among the 18 tracks here are tunes by Lightnin' Hopkins, Willie Dixon, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, and Big Mama Thornton) toured Europe, thrilling (among many others) the young Englishmen playing in bands like the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds. As with Volume 1, the monaural sound and black-and-white video are superb, making the release of the footage four decades later even more welcome. And Wolf? He was still in his prime in '64, perhaps equaled only by Muddy Waters (who appears on the first volume). "Did you ever been in the groove?" he asks at one point. "Well, I'm gonna put you way down in the woods." That he does, and blues... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 26 August 2003 Usually ships in 24 hours

Die-hard Muddy Waters fans will welcome this 12-song, 54-minute compilation of excellent live performances, but for an introduction to the legendary bluesman's music, blues neophytes may wish to look elsewhere (perhaps to In Concert 1971). Culled from three separate videotaped concerts for German television (from 1968, '74, and '78), these recordings are modest in quality (mono mixed for two-channel stereo), while the visuals provide routine two- or three-camera studio coverage. But these are indeed "rare performances" as the packaging promises, and they show Muddy Waters and his exceptional hand-picked sidemen in the prime of their latter-day incarnations, after acknowledgement by the Rolling Stones and other fast-rising rockers led to Muddy's renaissance period as the... "The world's greatest blues singer"? That's arguable, but there's no doubt that the late John Lee Hooker (1917-2001) was in a class by himself, a genuine original whose music--raw, primitively simple, scary even, powered by his deep moan of a voice--was the very embodiment of the Delta blues style. Big names like Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, and many more line up to pay tribute to the man in this absorbing 90-minute documentary; there are also plenty of interviews with family, friends, business associates, and the grizzled, laconic bluesman himself, along with some decent performance footage (as is usual in such projects, we get no complete songs). But this 2000 film's best moments come courtesy of writer-director Joerg Bundschuh's beautifully photographed contemporary...
