Anyone who is of the opinion that Rob Lowe comes across as being 'dull' on screen, or perhaps 'just a pretty face', should take time out to watch 'Square Dance'. His 'Golden Globe nominated performance' was justly deserved for his portrayal of the 'mentally-impared man-child', Rory.
There are some films watched during your childhood or teenage years that have a profound effect on you and, for me, 'Square Dance' is one such film. It is nice to see it released on DVD format so promptly.
Lowe skilfully plays the role of Rory, eliciting what can only be described as an emotional reaction from myself and, I'm sure, many others who have watched this heart-warming drama. It is roles like this and his portrayal of deaf mute, Nick Andros, in Stephen King's 'The Stand' that substantiate Lowe's talent and versatility as an actor.
'Square Dance' also features Winona Ryder in her acclaimed screen debut as Gemma, a 13-year old girl tired of living in Texas with her quarrelsome grandfather (Jason Robards), and who decides to go live with her mother (Jane Alexander) in Fort Worth. Whilst there, Gemma falls in love with Rory. She also discovers some hidden truths about her mother and the father she has never met. Life in Fort Worth turns out to be not as exciting and uncomplicated as she had initially expected.
Critically acclaimed, 'Square Dance' is an emotional drama that will remain with you forever.
Music: Don Henley, Ricky Scaggs, George Strait and Trace Adkins.

a.k.a. HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS..
For a drama made in 1986 on a low budget "Square Dance" isn't bad. It does have a few rewards to offer. First off it has a top-notch cast. Winona Ryder is wonderful in her first lead role. She first appeared in a supporting role in "Lucas". Also Rob Lowe is convincing playing a semi-retarded boy. Jane Alexander is a scene stealer as Ryder's loose living mother. Not to mention Jason Robards as Ryder's grandfather who (if nothing else) does one nice thing for her. He taught her how to square dance. For fans of Winona Ryder, you'll be happy to see that she is in every scene of this nearly 2 hour coming of age drama. If your reading this your likely to be a fan of Winona Ryder. Here is a list of other films you may like to see her in. Winona Ryder delivers an unusually delicate performance as Patty, a fragile "bad girl" with a reckless streak and a haunted conscience, in Stacy Cochran's promising but ultimately disappointing follow-up to his playful My New Gun. Lukas Haas is the smitten prep school senior who risks expulsion when he rescues Patty from a riding accident and hides her in his dorm room. Cochran draws tender, vulnerable performances from both actors and beautifully orchestrates the hormonally charged maelstrom in the corridors of the boys' dorm as rumors of the forbidden "older woman" spread like wildfire. It's the conventional, colorless stories that frame their relationship--she's on the run from the cops, he's slowly suffocating under the demands of a severe father--that fail them. Perpetually on... By now, we're used to the coming-of-age theme in movies about this era. But what makes ''1969'' special is its subtlety, in recognizing the differences in the way we reacted to news, gestures, comments in 1969 as compared to now. The term ''innocence'' is overused; it was simply one of fewer dimensions... no internet, fewer TV channels, when newspapers and radio took on a far greater role in forming our decisions. In the hitch-hiking and driving scenes through scenic Maryland, we remember that travel wasn't always comfortable, that we didn't take for granted getting from point A to point B.
Keifer Sutherland, Robert Downey Jr. and Winona Ryder are all fantastic, but Mariette Hartley really does a stellar job as a mom that keeps a family together through incredible strife.

A surprisingly engaging story of puppy love and friendship in a teen setting, this film focuses on the title character (Corey Haim), who is nerdy but winningly outgoing. He falls madly for a new girl in town (Kerri Green); since school is out for the summer, he becomes her only friend--until she meets his hunky pal (Charlie Sheen). Meanwhile, Lucas ignores the romantic yearnings of another female pal (Winona Ryder, in her screen debut). Written and directed by David Seltzer, this one is a charmer with substance, featuring strong, open performances by its young cast. It's also fascinating to watch today, more than a decade later, and consider what became of these performers: while Ryder grew to be one of Hollywood's brightest lights, Haim descended into substance abuse, as did Sheen, whose... "The House of the Spirits" was unknown to me until I read a review by my friend, "lawyeraau". I can't thank her enough for introducing this movie to me.
This is not the story of a house, but rather two... that takes place in South America...a beautiful country with an urgent desire to reform. Here begins our 60 year long saga of three remarkable generations.
Esteban (Jeremy Irons) wants to marry the young bride Rosa, the beautiful daughter of the Del Valle family. But an accidental tragedy takes the young girl's life and Esteban leaves, heart-broken to find his fortune on a large farm in the country side. Here he builds a beautiful house, hires ranch-hands, and becomes the infinitely wealthy "Patron".
Esteban returns to the house his former beloved once lived, and to his surprise,... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Meryl Streep - Jeremy Irons Director(s): Bille August DVD Release Date: Released the 21 October 2003 Usually ships within 24 hours

This dark comedy from 1989 was a good showcase for Winona Ryder, playing a high school girl brought into a clique of bitchy classmates (all named Heather), and Christian Slater, doing his early Jack Nicholson thing. While Ryder's character muddles over the consequences of giving up one set of friends for another, her association with a new boy (Slater) in school turns out to have deadly consequences. Director Michael Lehmann turned this unusual film into something more than another teen-death flick. There is real wit and sharp satire afoot, and the very fusion of horror and comedy is provocative in itself. Heathers remains a kind of benchmark in contemporary cinema for bringing surreal intelligence into Hollywood films. --Tom KeoghMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): Winona Ryder - Christian Slater Director(s): Michael Lehmann DVD Release Date: Released the 25 September 2001 Usually ships in 24 hours
