Review(s): DVD Classic American Indian Movies (Sitting Bull/Cry Blood, Apache/Battles of Chief Pontiac)
Classic is an apt term
Of the three movies, Sitting Bull (starring Iron Eyes Cody) and Battles of Chief Pontiac (Movie is in Black & White but is appropriate for the setting and date, stars Lon Chaney, Jr. and Lex Barker)are the best. Even tho Cry Blood, Apache is a poor third, the set is well worth the money. The injustices done to the American Indian is clearly and, I think, fairly presented.

Four Faces West is a superb little Western, and it is satisfying to see it released on DVD. McCrea, Frances Dee [his real life wife], Charles Bickford [Dee's father], and Joseph Calleia head a fine cast. McCrea is eminently believable; his trademark taciturn, self-effacing character is captivating--not a single shot is fired in the entire movie! Bickford's Pat Garrett is also a stand out. Now, let us hope that some of McCrea's other oaters get released---maybe RAMROD (with Veronica Lake), or the playful SADDLE TRAMP (with John McIntyre) and CATTLE DRIVE (with Dean Stockwell). And there is STRANGER ON HORSEBACK, another superb little Western....and RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY, already on VHS, desperately needs DVD release. Cynical awful film, poorly done, poorly acted and misleading. Joel McCrea is not the star of it. His bland son Jody is. Joel Mcrea hardly has any lines and appears only at the beginning and the end, mostly riding on horse with nothing to do. In the 1870s, pregnant Rebecca (Kelly Preston) and her husband are on their way across the West when they stop at a trading post. Her husband's naivete (and his prized Henry rifle) soon leads to his death at the hands of a ruthless buffalo hunter, and the proprietor of the trading post (Dan Haggerty) is killed as well. Cheyenne warrior chief Hawk (Pato Hoffman) is wounded in the fight with the buffalo hunter, and Rebecca helps nurse him back to health again, opting to stay at the trading post rather than go along with Hawk. Hawk returns to his tribe, but comes back to the post when Rebecca's baby is due (undoubtedly having figured out the date and put it in his Palm Pilot). Together they form a strange sort of love-hate affair and learn to get around their cultural differences, at... The technical part of this review refers to the Brentwood Home Video or BCI Eclipse version.
Republic Pictures was nearing the end of its career releasing B pictures mostly westerns, crime stories and those Bowery Boys pics when this one came around. Released in a process called TruColor, the films colors haven't aged well (at least in this transfer). But it doesn't detract that much from this fast moving story starring Bruce Bennett (Herman Brix, I gotta research and find out why he changed his name) as the namesake of the picture and Lon Chaney, Jr. as the Indian chief whom Daniel must eventually make peace with.
It's a story filled with fights, morality, romance and even song from country crooner Faron Young. Released in 1956, I'm sure to capitalize on the Davy Crockett craze at...
