DVD Secretary
This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, who gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles, and more. Secretary walks a fine line. It finds sly humor in these sadomasochistic doings without turning them into a gag, and it takes Lee and Edward's mutual desires seriously without getting self-righteous or pompous. Certainly not a movie for everyone, but some people may be unexpectedly stirred up by this smart and steamy tale of repressed passion. --Bret Fetzer
so weird...but life would be boring if it were safe
I absolutely loved this film. I am not personally into extreme S&M but just loved the measures this movie took to make these people real. JAmes Spader plays a perfestionist who has control issuse and Maggie Gyllenhaul is a mousie character who cuts to release her stress.
Spader's character takes the stress out of Gyllenhaul's character by basically controlling her reactions, allowing her to be free of stress. Whenever she makes a mistake, he "punishes" her rather than allows her to hurt herself...she's safe in his hands. You see her begin to explore her true woman self by actually taking care of her appearance.
Spader's character begins to feel guilty of the boss and employee relationship and tries to release Gyllenhaul from her duties, but she has other plans...She knows he loves her and will prove it.
A movie for popular culture subversives
If you are tired of the pastry puff pop culture movies meant for those that are not as smart as you, this may be your movie. I for one can't stand how dumbed down many movies are these days. If you enjoy dark humor and revel in awkward situations on screen you might enjoy it. Plus she is hot.
It's not for everyone . . . but it is for me!!
Here is what you need to know:
1.) This film is based on the short story by Mary Gaitskill entitled "Bad Behavior." Shainberg actually made a film-short of the work. Remaining true to the original, the film was dark and ended with the mental destruction of "Lee." Years later, Shainberg returned to this piece. With the help of Maggie Gyllenhaal, the script was rewritten to empower Lee. It is, without a doubt, a feminist film about "choice." Maggie chooses to remain at the desk . . . in this moment, she is the "master" of Grey's future. What will she decide? Watch and find out!!
2.) This film is as much about Mr. Grey's transformation as it is Lee's. Watch for this!! Watch how both become "beautiful" with the help of each other!
3.) This film does not imply that Grey "cures" Lee's desire for self-mutilation. Psychologically speaking, Lee simply replaces the pain she experiences from cutting with the "pain" of spanking. In this, the film remains realistic and truthful to the disease.
4.) If you are watching Secretary for the first time, (or are a huge fan), you will want to watch the prevalence of the color purple. In film, "purple" signifies transformation . . . watch where it is used and when. I think you will find this highly amusing!!
This film takes huge risks . . . and they all pay-off. Conservative viewers or those unaccustomed to Indie films may not enjoy it.
It is can seem slow to the uninitiated. For the rest, it is deliciously tormenting! It is playful, funny, and dark. Since it is designed to be a fairy-tale for adults, it plays on the notion that "there is someone for everyone."
I highly recomend it to anyone who is interested in the "softer-side" of SMBD, is interested in WAY off-beat romance, or even in feminist film.
A milestone of cinematic eroticism, The Story of O was an art house sensation in 1975, and it's still worthy of intelligent discussion. As with the controversial French novella by Pauline Réage, reactions to Just Jaeckin's sumptuous adaptation range from moral outrage to masturbatory indulgence, yet this remains one of the few sex films that stand the test of time (and a lot of academic study). Championed by practitioners of bondage and discipline and vilified by feminists, this metaphorical "love dream" (as Jaeckin has called it) follows the beautiful fashion photographer "O" (Corrine Clery) as she, like many gorgeously naked women before her, is "trained" for a seemingly satisfying life of love and discipline, her freedom sacrificed to the man (Anthony Steel) whom she... I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. The sex scenes were some of the best I've seen because they were graphic yet very realistic. The story was touching and honest. If you're an adult who enjoys a realistic story that is very hot, you will definitely enjoy this gem. Watch and enjoy! Adapted from the controversial novel by J.G. Ballard, Crash will either repel or amaze you, with little or no room for a neutral reaction. The film is perfectly matched to the artistic and intellectual proclivities of director David Cronenberg, who has used the inspiration of Ballard's novel to create what critic Roger Ebert has described as "a dissection of the mechanics of pornography." Filmed with a metallic color scheme and a dominant tone of emotional detachment, the story focuses on a close-knit group of people who have developed a sexual fetish around the collision of automobiles. They use cars as a tool of arousal, in which orgasm is directly connected to death-defying temptations of fate at high speeds. Ballard wrote his book to illustrate the connections between sex and... Winner of the Palm d'Or and Best Actor awards at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, sex, lies, and videotape transformed the independent film industry and turned writer-director Steven Soderbergh into the envy of aspiring filmmakers everywhere. Sly, seductive, and coolly intelligent, the movie explores the sexual shenanigans and personal preoccupations of its four central characters, revolving around a selfish lawyer (Peter Gallagher) who responds to his wife by having an affair with her free-spirited sister (Laura San Giacomo). But when the lawyer's college roommate (James Spader) arrives for an unexpectedly extended visit, the neglected wife (Andie MacDowell) is surprisingly responsive to his seductive hobby of videotaping women as they describe their sexual fantasies. It's his way... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): James Spader - Andie MacDowell Director(s): Steven Soderbergh DVD Release Date: Released the 28 August 2001 Usually ships in 24 hours
