DVD Invincible
Invincible opens with a glorious display of high comic book melodrama, as a malevolent superbeing named Os (Billy Zane, chewing the scenery with his dependable gusto) battles it out with a force of light called the White Warrior. When she opens his heart to love, Os finds himself commissioned to assemble a team of mortal human beings destined from before birth to become hyperhuman protectors of life--and only they can save the earth from the Shadowmen and their truly bad leader, Slate. It's all ridiculous, but for a while Invincible is completely entertaining, directed with verve, visual flash (including surprisingly good special effects and well-choreographed kung fu), and a silly but effective script. Unfortunately, about half-way through the movie grows visually repetitive and its good/evil scenario loses its juice, but that first half was still damn fun; Zane gives trashy dialogue the trashy zest it needs. --Bret Fetzer
Invincible is definitely not the best martial arts action film I've ever seen, but it's also far from being a bad movie. The only person in the cast I'm familiar with is Billy Zane who does an excellent job with his character. As for the rest of the cast I can't say they did a bad job, but the only reason is because I've nothing to compare their performances to. As for the plot for the movie, it wasn't half bad. As a matter of fact, I really couldn't have thought of a better setting for the movie myself.
Not Great but Good enough
The only reason I'm writing this is for the BAD reviews. The story is not hard to follow, If you pay attention to the philosophy. The action is good with chinese martial arts variations. The Shadowmen (like dark angel type beings) are trying to go home. To do that They must use the tablet to open a portal which will destroy earth. O's (Zane) is a shadowman who was shown good and wants to preserve the earth. Good philosophy, nice form, and some background humor. Aside from the "captain planet" similarities of the heroes, I think this was a good movie. Not flashy, not hard to follow, not profound or phenomenal, just good.
Billy Zane gave a good performance
A film with a decent story line but the acting wsn't that good. The only one that stood out for me were Os (Billy Zane) who added charm and interest to the speech and altogether stole the show. The fight scenes were well choreographed and decently performed, though the slow motion became rather too much after a while. There wasn't enough action in this film, or if there was there was way too much sitting and talking inbetween. The part where Os is telling the elements how Slate will try to trick them and that they musn't hate him for this lingered on a little too long leaving me quite bored at the end of it. The characters Os and Slate where well introduced at the beginning making it pretty simple to go along with though the elements weren't actually properly introduced although it was quite easy to see who they were anyway. Altogether I think this film could have done with a little less talking and had more action in. Billy Zane gave a good performance which added more interest to the film and made me want to keep watching. If the other actors had given as good as performance as him, then the film would have been of much higher standard.
A broad science fiction thriller in a classic vein, Equilibrium takes a respectable stab at a Fahrenheit 451-like cautionary fable. The story finds Earth's post-World War III humankind in a state of severe emotional repression: If no one feels anything, no one will be inspired by dark passions to attack their neighbors. Writer-director Kurt Wimmer's monochromatic, Metropolis-influenced cityscape provides an excellent backdrop to the heavy-handed mission of John Preston (Christian Bale), a top cop who busts "sense offenders" and crushes sentimental, sensual, and artistic relics from a bygone era. Predictably, Preston becomes intrigued by his victims and that which they die to cherish; he stops taking his mandatory, mood-flattening drug and is even aroused by a doomed... Inspired by the vintage thrillers of Val Lewton and Jacques Tourneur, Below is a superbly crafted spookfest primed for cult-favorite status. As he did with The Arrival and Pitch Black, director David Twohy revitalizes a B-movie staple--in this case, the World War II submarine thriller--by turning it into a nerve-wracking funhouse of smoke and mirrors, where chilling visions tease the brain and stir paranoia among a close-knit group of terrified characters. When a U.S. sub takes on three survivors from a sinking British ship, its captain (Bruce Greenwood) uncovers secrets while concealing his own. As the sub's recent history unfolds, its crew is increasingly haunted by ghostly images, fleeting and subliminal, while the threat of German attack looms ominously overhead.... Sultry Eliza Dushku runs for her life in a snug white tanktop, pursued by inbred backwoods cannibals in Wrong Turn. Dushku (Bring It On, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and a clump of other attractive young people (including Six Feet Under's Jeremy Sisto and Desmond Harrington of We Were Soldiers) get waylaid in the deep West Virginia wilds by a trio of grotesque mountain men, all given realistic ugliness by makeup artist Stan Winston (Interview with the Vampire, Terminator 2). Wrong Turn is the sort of movie where you know who's going to die by the order they appear in the credits, but fans of the inbred backwoods cannibals genre (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes) will find much to savor, particularly the... The tremendous charisma of Chow Yun-fat anchors this entertaining comic-book romp. Bulletproof Monk centers around a monk with no name (Chow) dedicated to protecting a sacred scroll that can give world-manipulating power to anyone who reads it. A hidden Nazi has been pursuing the scroll for 60 years and has finally caught up with the monk in present-day New York City; meanwhile, the monk suspects he may have found a disciple in a petty thief (Seann William Scott, Dude, Where's My Car?, American Pie) who's learned kung fu from watching double-feature chopsocky flicks. Don't let the presence of Chow Yun-fat lead you to expect much substance--this doesn't have the emotional scope of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or the visual panache of Hard-Boiled. But... This movie is amazing. The storyline is a bit hard to follow due to the relentless violence and gore, but thats what this movie is all about. The gore is some of the best I've ever seen, and the characters all act as if they were straight out of cartoons. It is a fast paced, awesome, and badass movie from start to finish. The very end doesn't make much sense, and they should have just left that part out, but i guess it leaves room for a sequel. Overall, this movie is the best movie ever, people can stop making movies now because they cannot top this amazing, heart-wrenching (literally), fun, kickass, badass movie.
