  • DVD Good Times - The Complete Second Season

Centered on the strong-willed but loving parents Florida and James Evans (Esther Rolle and John Amos), Good Times spun out stories of poverty and resilience that skillfully balanced comedy and politics. An episode in which James returns a found bag of money stolen from a bank doesn't trot out bland homilies about honesty, but becomes a surprisingly multilayered debate about civic virtue. In one of the second season's comic centerpieces, the Evans family avoids eating a neighbor's meatloaf because they think it's made with dog food. The scene is played as hilarious farce, but the acknowledgment of a poor old woman living on dog food gives the sequence an underlying bite. The commentary rarely feels forced; at its best, the show drew significance out of the characters' daily lives. An episode about a pregnant teen ends on an unexpectedly moving note, without any strings on the soundtrack to cue the audience's heartstrings--that's solid writing and acting. With buffoonish Jimmy "Dy-no-mite!" Walker, foxy Ja'Net Du Bois, sweet BernNadette Stanis, and militant Ralph Carter rounding out the cast, Good Times is a time capsule both for fashion (even though they lived in the projects, the Evans' fashion-plate neighbor Willona, played by Du Bois, was rarely without a glamorous get-up) and for a time in which mainstream sitcoms had the freedom to reflect the tougher side of reality. --Bret Fetzer

    Florida Want's To Be More

The second season keeps the laughs coming at you big time. In the second season opener we get a chance to see that Florida wants to be more than just a housewife and mother, she wants her own life too. All the episodes are great in season 2 so you better buy it.

    Absolutely Dy-no-mite...!

Nominated for three Golden Globes, Good Times premiered in mid-season 1974 to widespread critical acclaim and audience popularity. A spin-off of the Bea Arthur (of Golden Girls fame) sitcom Maude (1972), Good Times became the fourth of five highly successful sitcoms brought into being during the 1970's decade by Norman Lear. In addition to Maude, those sitcoms were All In The Family (1971), Sanford & Son (1972), and The Jeffersons (1975). The second of three to focus exclusively on African-American family life, Good Times became a source for groundbreaking social commentary in compliment to its penchant for hilarious family comedy...

Good Times centers around the lives of James (John Amos) and Florida Evans (Esther Rolle), an African-American couple raising their three children in a Chicago housing development. Eldest son J.J. (Jimmie Walker) is a skinny, wisecracking ladies man with an affinity for painting. Middle child Thelma (BernNadette Stanis) plays the role of moderating influence on the passions of her two brothers, while youngest son Michael (Ralph Carter) is always involved in a cause to help others or end an injustice. The family is often visited by Florida's best friend from high school, Willona (Ja'net DuBois), who also lives in the project. In later seasons, she's accompanied by adopted daughter Penny (Janet Jackson). With additional comic relief provided by overweight super Nathan Bookman (Johnny Brown), Good Times is a family-oriented TV series laden with great one-liners and plenty of laugh-tracks...

The Good Times (Season 2) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere "Florida Flips" in which Florida's erratic behavior causes the family and her best friend Willona to question what's wrong with her. Michael thinks that menopause in the root cause, while Willona thinks that it's Florida's boredom with the daily routine of being a housewife... Other notable episodes from Season 2 include "The Person I Most Admire" in which Michael is tasked with writing a school essay on the person he most admires, prompting him to choose between James and Florida, and "Florida's Big Gig" in which James takes Florida along on a job interview where she's offered the job instead of him...

Below is a list of episodes included on the Good Times (Season 2) DVD:

    Episode 14 (Florida Flips)
    Episode 15 (J.J. Becomes a Man: Part 1)

    The DVD Report

    Keepin' it Real!!

I am a huge fan of "Good Times".I wasn't born until 1979, however I still love the show.Even 30 years later I can relate to the Evans family struggles to pay the bills. They kept it real, and did not try to sugarcoat anything. I used to catch the reruns on tv, which are few. I am so gald it's on DVD. I absolutely loved James Evans, he is the type of father that is needed in 2005 to keep kids in line! I recommend Season 2, and all the seasons.Truly funny, with good messages mixed in! Add this to your cart, you'll be glad you did!

What first comes to mind is super-skinny Jimmie Walker proclaiming "Dyn-o-mite!" and waving his arms like a funky scarecrow in a whirlwind of 1970s jive. But while Walker's James "J.J." Evans Junior became the most famous face of Good Times, the bedrock of the sitcom were the actors playing his parents, Esther Rolle and John Amos as Florida and James Evans, two good-hearted but fallible people struggling to raise their family amid the poverty of the Chicago projects. Add to the mix boy-crazy daughter Thelma (Bernnadette Stanis), preadolescent black activist Michael (Ralph Carter), and Florida's world-wise best friend Willona (sassy Ja'net DuBois), and you've got one of the best comic ensembles of the time. Modern politically correct sensibilities may wince a bit at J.J.'s... More Info about this DVD

Good Times - The Complete Third Season DVD

Like others sitcoms, Good Times was better in its earlier seasons, especially when John Amos was still on the show as James Evans, Jr. In fact, Amos did some of the best acting on the show. Good Times was a look at a family in the ghetto who managed to navigate through poverty, the sexual revolution, racial changes and so much more during a volatile time in our nation's history. The interplay between Esther Rolle (Florida) and the children is hilarious, bombastic, but always loving. It showed a family pull together with love, honor, and dignity. I wish amidst all the new reality shows, trash talk shows, and MTV, that there could be just ONE show like Good Times. But since those days look pretty much gone, get this set of DVD's and enjoy what was a much funnier and more sane time in... More Info about this DVD

Good Times - The Complete Fourth Season DVD

I really enjoyed this TV Series when I was younger and have seen every episode, so finally getting them on DVD is a special treat for me. Seasons 1-3 were great! I looked up to John Amos' character "James". To me, James was what I needed growing up without a Dad in the home. So as a kid, when I first saw the episode where he dies and since I really looked up to James, I felt for Florida and the Evans Family and I even went into the bathroom and cried after that episode because I didn't want any of my family members to see me crying. To my understanding, John Amos was constantly frustrated and voicing his opinion about the writing and wanted to see more positive situations written into the show. I guess people at CBS thought they knew enough about African-Americans who watched the show and... More Info about this DVD

Good Times - The Complete Fifth Season DVD

I watched this show when it was on in the 70s and I've been a big fan. It just goes to show you that "there is nothing new under the sun...". The concerns and problems the Evans family dealt with then are mostly the same ones we have today. The surviving cast should do a reunion movie. More Info about this DVD

What's Happening - The Complete First Season DVD

Cool out and return to the days of tight pants, afro picks, and... empty wallets. What's Happening was the African American answer to Happy Days and featured a theme almost as catchy as Quincy Jones's bouncy number for Sanford and Son (this time by the great Henry Mancini). The popular L.A.-based sitcom premiered in 1976 during the height of the disco craze and the action centers around bespectacled teenager Raj (Ernest Thomas, the show's Richie Cunningham) and fun-lovin' pals Dwayne (Haywood Nelson) and Rerun ("'cause every summer he gotta go back to school to repeat what he did all winter"; played by Fred Berry). The boys are kept in check by Raj's hardworking single mother, Mrs. Thomas (Mabel King), bratty kid sister Dee (Danielle Spencer), and sassy waitress... More Info about this DVD
