    Hidden Gem

For anyone who enjoys a solid mystery with good, interesting characters, Backfire is the movie. Seemingly missed among mainstream movies, this one is a breath of fresh air when compared to the many lackluster, computerized movies Hollywood seems to produce today. Excellent movie with surprising ending.

In the Cut (Unrated and Uncut Director's Edition) DVD

Based on Susanna Moore's popular novel, In the Cut centers on Frannie (Meg Ryan), an emotionally stifled English teacher who gets steamy with sultry Malloy (Mark Ruffalo, You Can Count On Me), a cop who's investigating a series of brutal murders--but Frannie soon suspects that Malloy may be the killer. As a psychological thriller, In the Cut is heavier on psychology than thrills; the story is a skeleton that director Jane Campion (The Piano, An Angel at My Table) cloaks in one of the most nightmarish visions of urban life since Taxi Driver or Seven, accompanied by lots of explicit sex. The movie's dark tone will put some viewers off, but Ruffalo's effortless magnetism serves him well; no woman in the audience will question how quickly Ryan... More Info about this DVD

    Dream Lover DVD

Plot is a good thing with this movie. It's entertaining and worth the price of the video/DVD. It's about a couple working together to legally rob his friend. And it's a good idea with a little twist on the ending that's pretty clever. 'The friend' comes out ahead and clean. The Spader Sex is good and it's filmed well with colors that seem dark. The bad thing about this movie is it's dream sequences: they are 100% dumb; I cannot figure out a reason for them. Viewers understand 'the friend' - Spader - the Dream Lover is living a dream...and we can SEE that it's becoming a nightmare, we don't need foolish clowns cut-ins to bop us on the heads and say, "DREAM!" I personaly find it a tad bit unbeliveable that a hot, sweet Sexy Spader would not be the 'dream' of any woman. The female lead in... More Info about this DVD

    Men DVD

This low budget film is a real bore. Sean Young plays a chef (who doesn't know how to cut vegetables) who is trying to "find herself" by experimenting with sex and relationships. She is torn between her older boss (John Heard) and a young politically active photographer (the very likeable Richard Hillman). This situation is not very compelling and the movie has nothing new to say.

Sean does a pretty good job with the role; however, she is clearly at least ten years too old for such a role and tries to look younger by wearing pigtails and overalls, which is laughable at times. Unfortunately, much of the dialogue and several of the scenes are also unintentionally funny. The only positive aspect of the movie is the use of some great old jazz songs - too bad the soundtrack isn't available.... More Info about this DVD

    Going All the Way DVD

The Dan Wakefield novel upon which this film was based has been hailed by critics as another Catcher in the Rye, but you wouldn't know that from this unenlightening adaptation. Jeremy Davies (Saving Private Ryan) plays a superneurotic, Korean War veteran who develops an unlikely friendship with another, Neal Cassady-like vet (Ben Affleck) as well as a taste in art, New York City, and college girls. The trouble with the film is that it refuses to yield important information about its central figure. Davies's character has some kind of undefined problem with his mother, religion, ambition, masturbation, and much else, but without access to his internal dialogue, we only see him as a twitchy insect for whom regular sex with a beautiful girlfriend inexplicably does nothing for...
