DVD Outpost in Morocco
It's no Gunga Din, but Outpost in Morocco (1949) is a fine example of B-movie resourcefulness, reviving a then-dying genre (the Foreign Legion adventure) with the time-honored appeal of a veteran star. In this case it's George Raft in his waning days of stardom, playing a playboy Legionnaire in North Africa who falls for the daughter of a local sultan (Marie Windsor, with arching eyebrows and sultry allure) when he's assigned to escort her to her native Moroccan enclave. Her father hates the French and is determined to win Moroccan independence, and the action-packed climax leads to a typically sobering comment on the hazards of colonialism. Routine stuff, overall, and this otherwise good-looking DVD suffers from inexcusable background hiss on its remastered soundtrack. Still, there's some welcomed comic relief from Akim Tamiroff as Raft's obligatory sidekick, and director Robert Florey makes excellent use of the film's authentic North African locations. --Jeff Shannon

By turns hard-nosed and ribald, They Drive by Night smashes through a vintage Warner Bros. yarn about truck drivers, the Depression, and one duplicitous dame. The opening reels are a forceful look at the dangerous lives of independent truckers (George Raft and Humphrey Bogart as brothers--Bogie in the supporting role, though he would soon eclipse Raft in Hollywood), battling the system and the economy. The final section veers into a less exciting murder frame-up, but Ida Lupino is so delicious as the Black Widow, it works. The robust humor of director Raoul Walsh dominates the film, with some truly hilarious double entendres aimed at outfoxing the censors. This 1941 melodrama is memorable for both its strong central performances and their intimations of how the previous decade's crime dramas would evolve into film noir--no accident, given the solid direction of veteran Raoul Walsh and the hand of screenwriter John Huston, who teamed with the author of its novelistic source, W.R. Burnett (Little Caesar). If you are a fan of the movies of the 30's and 40's you will recognize Edward Arnold but probably not his name. He was often cast as a man of power in the state, town, company or the family and he was convincingly good at it. Arnold diverts from his usual persona in Eyes In The Night. He deftly assumes the role of a blind private detective. Arnold brings to the screen some extraordinary talent as the male lead, the extent of which you don't see in his appearances as a supporting actor. His guide dog will amaze you, too. With a little tweaking this should have become a series of movies, and could have competed with Charlie Chan, The Thin Man, etc. The story and screenplay is a little hokey by today's standards, of course, but I am glad I bought it. I enjoy all the Bulldog Drummond movies, no matter who is playing the lead, no matter who is playing the chief of police, Drummond's family friend. His butler Tenny is worth the price of any of these films.
This particular film shocked me in that it takes Drummond and his crew to Morocco, which is portrayed as a sophisticated locale, and very European. The European feel surprised me especially in comparison to other films made at this time which portray jungles with pitch black savages and rampaging wild animals.
