DVD Extreme Ops
When an extreme-sports filmmaking team sets out to make a commercial featuring a gold-medal skier outrunning an avalanche, they run afoul of a Serbian war criminal hiding out in a mountain resort. So it's snowboards vs. bullets on steep slopes of snow--and if that's your thing, Extreme Ops is for you. There are also subplots about the high-class skier (Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, House on Haunted Hill) trying to prove herself with the rough-and-tumble snowboard scamps, and various romantic sparks flying, but the only real point to this movie is lengthy shots of stuntpeople zipping down the mountainsides. Though it could stand to have less plot and more action, there's a good dose of spectacle nonetheless. Rufus Sewell (Dark City), Devon Sawa (Final Destination), and the cast do a serviceable job, but poor Brit Rupert Graves (excellent in Mrs. Dalloway) was forced to act through a terrible American accent. --Bret Fetzer
Not the greatest movie ever made...but not the worst.
Personally, i rented this movie because of Devon Sawa. i think that he is an amazing actor, and even though i thought it was a good movie...i think he can act a much better role, he didn't even have a big part in the movie. i liked it though, there was some action and anyone who likes extreme sports or snowboarding will probably like this movie. i couldn't say that i found the movie great but it was entertaining and even though the storyline was a little flat at times i still liked it. they could have done a better job and turned this movie into a better seller by putting some more action into it. but either way...i thought it was good. and anyone who likes Devon Sawa and is planning on watching this because of him...go for it. i bet you'll end up liking it...if your are a true fan. i'll admit he has gained a little weight..but i love him anyway. anyway...its a good movie to watch if you don't feel like getting serious or you feel like watching some snowboarding.
Better than I expected (view of a boarder)
First and formost, this is an extreme sports (specifically snowboarding) movie. If you don't snowboard, you probably won't enjoy it as much as I did. To give credit where credit is due, the plot isn't about some boarders who get in the way of some terrorists and decide to kick some butt. It's about some snowboarders shooting a commerial who get in the way of some terrorists and are trying to get there heck out of there when they realize what's up.
The stunts are no doubt over the top, just as you would expect, and the characters all contribute some good humor. Don't put on huge expectations, and you'll be rewarded with a good ride.
DOWNHILL UPHILL SIDEWAYS UPSIDE DOWN RACING
EXTREME OPS packs a real wallop with some of its outstanding mind-boggling ski/snowboard sequences. The scenery is breathtaking and there is one long tense scene involving dangling on the side of the Alps. Other than that, we have a standard plot that doesn't move quick enough and some cardboard performances particularly from Bridgette Wilson Sampras and Rupert Graves. Perennial bad boy Rufus Sewell seems lost in the role of a hero, and Devon Sawa hops around like one of the 17 year cicadas. BUT who cares? The action sequences are outstanding and it's an enjoyable diversion. Still the best ski scenes on film are from ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, and they didn't use CGI!
Though it bears little resemblance to the original 1969 thriller starring Michael Caine, the 2003 remake of The Italian Job stands on its own as a caper comedy that's well above average. The title's a misnomer--this time it's actually a Los Angeles job--but the action's just as exciting as it propels a breezy tale of honor and dishonor among competing thieves. Inheriting Caine's role as ace heist-planner Charlie Croker, Mark Wahlberg plays straight-man to a well-cast team of accomplices, including Mos Def, Jason Statham, and scene-stealer Seth Green in a variation of the role originally played by Noel Coward. As the daughter of Croker's ill-fated mentor (Donald Sutherland), Charlize Theron is recruited to double-cross a double-crosser (Edward Norton in oily villain mode), and once... Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell swagger through S.W.A.T., a guns-and-big-trucks macho extravaganza based on the 1970s TV show of the same name, about the police teams brought in to take care of extremely dangerous situations. Jackson plays a sergeant brought out of retirement to form a new squad, which includes rebellious Farrell (The Recruit) and tough babe Michelle Rodriguez (Girlfight, Blue Crush). After a lot of training and head-butting with a smarmy police captain, the squad gets assigned to transfer the head of a European crime cartel (Olivier Martinez, Unfaithful) who's declared on television that he'll give $100 million to anyone who gets him out. Every scumbag in Los Angeles descends to claim the money, turning a routine transfer into a... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Samuel L. Buffed-up action star Vin Diesel plays a reckless DEA agent in A Man Apart, which aspires to merge big-budget action fare with a grittier, The French Connection-style procedural drama. When his wife is murdered by a mysterious drug lord called Diablo, Sean Vetter (Diesel) loses his moral bearings and risks the lives of his fellow agents in a quest for revenge. A Man Apart tries to give Diesel the opportunity to demonstrate a greater emotional range, but it's a mess; the supposedly tender scenes are generic and flat, while the action scenes are utterly incomprehensible. Much of the time it's unclear who's a cop and who's a thug, so when people get shot--and a lot of people get shot--it just becomes a bland wash of blood and bullets. --Bret FetzerMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): Vin Diesel - Larenz Tate Director(s): F. Partly inspired by 1948's The Big Clock and its nominal 1987 remake No Way Out, the Denzel Washington thriller Out of Time is quite enjoyable if you ignore its implausible plotting. Like those earlier films, this reunion of Washington and his Devil in a Blue Dress director Carl Franklin is about a man--in this case the police chief (Washington) of sleepy Banyan Key, Florida--who falls into a trap set by others, sinks into legal quicksand of his own making, and must race the clock to extricate himself from a series of incriminating setbacks. The Florida setting adds welcome character to the potboiler plot, and Washington's screen-cred makes it easy to overlook the absurdities of rookie writer David Collard's screenplay. Eva Mendes is sharp and sensible as... Blade meets The Crow and The Matrix in Underworld, a hybrid thriller that rewrites the rulebook on werewolves and vampires. It's a "cuisinart" movie (blend a lot of familiar ideas and hope something interesting happens) in which immortal vampire "death dealers" wage an ancient war against "Lycans" (werewolves), who've got centuries of revenge--and some rather ambitious genetic experiments--on their lycanthropic agenda. Given his preoccupation with gloomy architecture (mostly filmed in Budapest, Hungary), frenetic mayhem and gothic costuming, it's no surprise that first-time director Len Wiseman gained experience in TV commercials and the art departments of Godzilla, Men in Black, and Independence Day. His work is all surface, no substance,... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Len Wiseman DVD Release Date: Released the 06 January 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours
