  • DVD The Fast and the Furious (Widescreen Tricked Out Edition)

A guilty pleasure with excess horsepower, The Fast and the Furious efficiently combines time-honored male fantasies (hot cars, hot women, hot action) into a vacuous plot of crystalline purity. It's trash, but it's fun trash, in which a hotshot Los Angeles cop named Brian (Paul Walker) infiltrates a gang of street racers suspected of fencing stolen goods from hijacked trucks. The gang leader is Dom (Vin Diesel), ex-con and reigning king of the street racers, who lives for those 10 seconds of freedom when his high-performance "rice rocket" (a highly modified Asian import) hurtles toward another quarter-mile victory. Racing is street theater for a lawless youth subculture, and Dom is a star behind the wheel--charismatic, dangerous, and protective toward his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster), who's attracted to Brian as the newest member of Dom's car-crazy team.

Director Rob Cohen treats this like Roman tragedy for MTV junkies, pushing every scene to adrenaline-pumping extremes; when his camera isn't caressing a spectrum of nitrous oxide-enhanced dream machines, it's ogling countless slim 'n' sexy race babes. The undercover-cop scenario cheaply borrows the split-loyalty theme perfected in Donnie Brasco; a rival Asian gang adds mystery and menace; and digital trickery is cleverly employed to explore the fuel-injected innards of the day-glo racecars. It's about as substantial as a perfume ad, but just as alluring, and for heavy-metal maniacs of any age, Diesel's superblown '69 Charger proves that Detroit muscle never goes out of style. --Jeff Shannon

    The Greatest Film Ever Made

This movie was the bomb. Vin Deisel should have gotten the Oscar that year. The youth of today live in an inspired age. I was inspired to modify my Honda Civic. I bolted an ironing board to the back (for better rear traction with my front wheel drive four banger), added twenty decals (10hp gain each), then got dual exhausts with coffee can tips (another 40hp gain), lowered it two inches, and added $2,000 worth of fiberglass body kit (This extra weight and wind resistance gave me yet another 40hp gain). To top off my phat mods I ditched those weak easy-to-see brake lights and got the dope silver framed harder-to-see ones (add 12hp). Now all the Corvettes, Mustangs and Ferraris fear me. I'm pretty sure they do, but my $3,000 boomin' 1,000 watt woofers and moose fart muffler are too loud for me to hear what they're saying. Yeah, they're laughing, but it's cuz dey insecure cuz I gotz da pimpt ride yo. Don't be hatin.

In 20 years this film's subtle nuance and profound social commentary will be truly appreciated. Cinematic genius through and through. The Fast and the Furious gives me hope that the youth of today will bring a brighter tomorrow...or a phatter tomorrow....or sumpin like dat.

    Style Over Substance

You know something I notice with movies directed by Rob Cohen that have Vin Diesel in them? NONE of them have real plots in them; they are all more of crowd pleasers. This is no exception. If you like visuals, you will love this movie. But if you are looking for some actual good action movies, I suggest you look elsewhere (lots of recommended titles that I'd rather not list). Really, I found it hard to just keep on watching this because there's nothing that made me think "Wow!" when I was amazed, except that so many people actually wanted to see this. Although I don't necessarily recommend it either, XXX also is quite lame and is more about seeing the explosion than an actual coherent story. I don't think I'd want to shell out money for this.

On the good side, "Sin City" just came out a couple days ago.

    A solid 8 out of 10!

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen! There's lots of fighting and car racing, many scenes of suspenseful music, some funny parts, and this is one of the few PG-13s with the "F bomb" in it. Also, there is a ton of good acting and there are many scenes that teenagers and adults would get a kick out of, as well. Vin Diesel, who is one of my favorite actors of all time, does very well here and is cool as always. This movie is great, and I highly recommend it to everyone.

2 Fast 2 Furious (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Like the high-revving imports and American muscle cars that roar down the streets of its south Florida setting, 2 Fast 2 Furious is tricked out to the max. While Vin Diesel opted for his XXX franchise, this obligatory sequel to The Fast and the Furious benefits from Diesel's absence, allowing returning star Paul Walker to shine while forging a lively partnership with rising star Tyrese, who fulfills his sidekick duties with more vitality than Diesel could ever muster. The Miami/Dade locations are another bonus, lending colorful backdrop to the most dazzling street-racing sequences (both real and digitally composited) ever committed to film. The plot is disposable--former cop Walker and jailbird Tyrese are recruited by the FBI to dethrone a thuggish kingpin (Cole... More Info about this DVD

    XXX (Widescreen Special Edition) DVD

Vin Diesel is no James Bond, and he doesn't want to be. That's why XXX announced Diesel as the adrenalin-junkie Bond of the PlayStation generation, copying the Bond formula so shamelessly that this action-packed silliness would be a Bond movie if it starred Pierce Brosnan. Reuniting Diesel with his Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen, XXX has an attitude (if not a brain) all its own, plucking Diesel's Xander Cage from his celebrity as an extreme sports renegade, recruited by a National Security Agency big shot (Samuel L. Jackson) to foil a nasty Czech villain (Marton Csokas) who's eager to depopulate Prague with remote-controlled biological weaponry. Toss in a sulky, sultry Russian agent (Asia Argento) and you've got extreme Bond-age for anyone who thinks... More Info about this DVD

    Gone in 60 Seconds DVD

Kip Raines (Giovanni Ribisi) is a cocky young car thief working with a crew to steal 50 cars for a very bad man whose nickname is "The Carpenter." Being young and cocky, Kip messes up, so it's up to his big brother, Randall "Memphis" Raines (Nicolas Cage), to come out of car thief retirement and save him. With a cast that includes Robert Duvall, Angelina Jolie, Delroy Lindo, Cage, and Ribisi, it would be easy to say this story wastes all their talents--which it does, but that's not the point. This is a Jerry Bruckheimer film. A good story and complex characters would only get in the way of the action scenes and slow the movie down. No, Gone in 60 Seconds (based on the cult 1974 film of the same name) is not about the stars as much as it's about cars. Fast cars. Rare cars.... More Info about this DVD

    A Man Apart DVD

Buffed-up action star Vin Diesel plays a reckless DEA agent in A Man Apart, which aspires to merge big-budget action fare with a grittier, The French Connection-style procedural drama. When his wife is murdered by a mysterious drug lord called Diablo, Sean Vetter (Diesel) loses his moral bearings and risks the lives of his fellow agents in a quest for revenge. A Man Apart tries to give Diesel the opportunity to demonstrate a greater emotional range, but it's a mess; the supposedly tender scenes are generic and flat, while the action scenes are utterly incomprehensible. Much of the time it's unclear who's a cop and who's a thug, so when people get shot--and a lot of people get shot--it just becomes a bland wash of blood and bullets. --Bret Fetzer More Info about this DVD

    S.W.A.T. (Widescreen Special Edition) DVD

Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell swagger through S.W.A.T., a guns-and-big-trucks macho extravaganza based on the 1970s TV show of the same name, about the police teams brought in to take care of extremely dangerous situations. Jackson plays a sergeant brought out of retirement to form a new squad, which includes rebellious Farrell (The Recruit) and tough babe Michelle Rodriguez (Girlfight, Blue Crush). After a lot of training and head-butting with a smarmy police captain, the squad gets assigned to transfer the head of a European crime cartel (Olivier Martinez, Unfaithful) who's declared on television that he'll give $100 million to anyone who gets him out. Every scumbag in Los Angeles descends to claim the money, turning a routine transfer into a... More Info about this DVD
