  • DVD Ballroom Dancing for Beginners

Ballroom Dancing for Beginners will appeal to novice ballroom dancers who want an introduction to several different social dances. Instructor Teresa Mason, assisted by Randolph Scott, teaches basic patterns for six popular ballroom dances: fox-trot, cha-cha, tango, waltz, rumba, and swing. Mason sensibly begins by introducing steps that recur in many ballroom dances, such as walking step, rock step, and triple step; several dance positions; and music timing for different dances. Next you start learning specific dances. This 47-minute video is well instructed, not rushed or complex, and Mason doesn't try to pack too many moves into each dance. The black background, however, is somber and sometimes makes it difficult to see Scott's moves clearly (he's dressed in a dark suit). The music sometimes seems odd and doesn't always match the dance. --Joan Price

Review(s): DVD Ballroom Dancing for Beginners
    Useful for a beginner

As a rank beginner in ballroom dancer, I found this DVD to be instructive and clear. The narration is concise and the demonstrations are well done. The instructional level is very basic, but that is ok for someone just starting. This DVD could serve as useful supplement to "real" dancing lessons, and it would make a good review reference for the sometime dancer.

    Bad quality

After watching this DVD disk I found that it was difficult to study man's part. The man on disk dressed on so that the color of his dress and background almost same. You have to pay much attention to separate where his legs are and how he moves. On the other hand, the lady's part has good contrast.

    easy to follow, but simple

There are no frills with this DVD, but Teresa takes a simple, easy to follow approach. This DVD is EXTREMELY WELL INDEXED! Whether you think her approach is best or not, it is so easy to go back and forth between the lessons, since everything is indexed as a separate chapter. Contrast this to DVDs that make you go to the beginning of the Tango chapter, then forward through 12 minutes of dancing... Sometimes I found the DVD too simple and would have liked more depth. Overall, easy to follow, easy to use. ...just gotta work on that music...

    Ballroom Dancing DVD

This DVD has helped my wife and I become better dancers. It features the teacher and his partner but then shows very average people of all ages dancing throughout the DVD. Being male, I was a little intimidated by this at first but quickly lost that feeling because of the pace and teaching techniques the instructors use. Good buy! Only drawback is that if you rewind often to watch and practice on your own, you quickly get tired of the music being played. More Info about this DVD

    Latin Dancing for Beginners DVD

Latin Dancing for Beginners introduces five popular Latin dances: meringue, paso doble, tango, bolero, and mambo. Teresa Mason, assisted by Lance Estridge, teaches five different steps for each dance, a total of 25 moves in 45 minutes, so instruction moves quickly. The dancers show good form and mastery of the moves, but instruction is rushed and not detailed enough for true beginners. For example, Mason points out that a move has "hip action," but doesn't explain how to do that hip action. New steps are seldom from the rear, so a true beginner would have a tough time figuring them out. An enormous problem is that Estridge, dressed in black, blends in with the black background, making it difficult to see his hips and legs (fortunately his shoes catch the light). Sometimes...
