Review(s): DVD Baby's First Months...What Do We Do Now (2003)
Great Video, but Very One-Sided on Vaccinations
Our family has the video version of this DVD. Here is the review for it:
Overall, this video is absolutely excellent for any mother who wants to learn the basics of Baby care. It devotes a reasonable amount of time to breastfeeding, and does show a lot of actual breastfeeding footage (which many feel is inappropriate for husbands and children to see).
The only real problem with the video are the scare tactics that they use to promote vaccinations, such as children in the hospital. The vaccine section bothers me, not only because of the scare tactics, but also because everyone in the whole video appears to be rich, EXCEPT for the parents of the children in the vaccination portion, which appeared to be very poor. I would recommend that parents read the book Vaccination: The Issue of Our Times by Peggy O'Mara or check out resources available concerning the "other side" of vaccines at www.909shot.com.
Unclear formate of product
I ordered this product in VHS as it was listed in VHS/DVD. When it arrived it was in DVD formate. I teach prenatal classes and the tv used has a built in video. I could only send it back after requesting and printing a return authorization which included a preprinted label. The label had a code on it that the return was prepaid by supplier. When I received notice of my refund- shipping and handling,taxes-more than what was paid originally were deducted.Needless to say I was unable to view the product.
Great Video For New Parents!
My husband and I purchased this DVD to learn what to expect when we bring our baby home. We wanted an overview of everything, and that is what we got. The DVD is broken down into sections and thoroughly explains each topic. What is great about it is that you can go back and just watch a certain section if you need a refresher. The entire DVD is about 1 hour long, so some information is summarized--if you need to, you can ask your doctor for more detailed info. The price was great, and we feel more prepared for the arrival of our little one.

I bought this DVD because I didn't want to attend a traditional childbirth class, but still wanted to be informed. I found this to be just what I needed. The instructor gives a lot of good information is a pretty compact amount of time. I like the fact that I can go back and review parts of it whenever I want. I did not find the audio quality, her sense of humor or her accent to be annoying or prohibitive to the learning process as some others seem to have. It's broken down into simple segments and very easy to follow. Watching it gave me a real sense of how long a bath might take, etc. If you don't know much and are considering this DVD, then it will probably be perfect for you. If you already know how to take care of a baby, and need some reminders, then you might do better asking around or looking online for refreshers. Dr. Karp applied common sense to the "problem" of crying babies that most new parents face, by borrowing from traditions being used around the world to calm babies down as if you had "flipped a switch." He acknowledges the existence of a 'fourth trimester', i.e. the first three months of the baby's life and the need to use techniques to make the baby feel as in the mother's womb to calm him/her down, appealing to their calm reflex.
These techniques are summarized as the five S's: Swaddling (very tight, to resemble the tight environment of the uterus), Side or Stomach position (otherwise known as the football hold), Shushing (as loud as the baby cries), Swinging (making the head jiggle slightly, to replicate the mom's movements with the baby in her tummy) and Sucking (with your finger,... With the many obligations in parents' daily lives, plus so many short- and long-term decisions to make, moms and dads can become confused, short-tempered, and completely stessed out. And that leads to feelings of anxiety, guilt and incompetence. This DVD Video Guide is supportive and informative without talking down to you and helped give me the confidence I was looking for to face some of the common challenges that arise in the first 2 years. The information is clearly presented and is organized into the following developmental periods: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months and 12-24 months. For the next age group...toddlers-preschoolers (ages 2, 3, 4 and 5), I highly recommend a small pocket guide called THE POCKET PARENT offering hundreds of sanity saving suggestions to try. Set up as... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 29 July 2003 Usually ships in 24 hours

There's a lot to remember when taking care of a newborn these days: from car seats to colic, from circumcision care to crib safety. Dividing its information into 10 chapters (easily referenced by numbering in the right-hand corner), First Days Home covers baby's appearance, breastfeeding and formula, sleeping, crying, bathing, diapering, health and safety for baby, mom's recovery (hemorrhoids, discharges, and other fun stuff), and family relations. This 56-minute primer can't possibly have the details and depth of a book on the subject but makes the perfect summary for Dad or a babysitter, or a refresher course for a second-time mom. Chapters range in length from 2 to 9 minutes and cover all the basics, most importantly when to call the doctor for either baby or Mom and how to...
