  • DVD Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 1

Forget Steve Reeves and all those Italian strongmen who played stiff, humorless versions of the mythic demigod in 1960s Saturday matinee fodder. Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (a cluster of 1990s television films followed by a syndicated series) re-imagines and re-introduces Hercules--son of Olympian chief Zeus and an earthbound, mortal mother--as a laidback but focused hero of ordinary folks with extraordinary problems. Played with casual grace and ironic wit by Kevin Sorbo, the new Hercules wanders through an equally entertaining, revisionist view of ancient Greece as, well, charming and accessible--not exactly Homeric. There are gods and monsters aplenty, but if this was the cradle of civilization, well....

This eight-disc volume includes five movie-length adventures, thirteen one-hour episodes, and numerous bonus features. Narratively, the unfolding story finds Herc doing good deeds wherever he's needed, though his backstory is more interesting, including a dubious relationship with his all-powerful dad (a sweet performance by Anthony Quinn)and a tendency to feel the wrath of Zeus's wife, Hera, simply because Hercules is the philandering old man's illegitimate offspring. The movie cycle ends with Herc in a state of domestic bliss; the subsequent, regular series darkens him considerably but then thrusts him repeatedly into adventures with redemptive possibilities.

Nifty special effects make one believe once again in centaurs, many-headed serpents, a Minotaur, a Cyclops, and several other fantastic species not included in standard references to Greek myths. The regular or recurring cast include Michael Hurst as Hercules's vain, comic-foil buddy, Iolaus; Tawny Kitaen as the hero's wife; and Lucy Lawless in a pre-Xena role (in Hercules and the Amazon Women) and then as the Warrior Princess herself for multiple episodes. All together, this is a show that turned out to be smarter and funnier than anyone might have expected in the mid-'90s, and which holds up very well today. --Tom Keogh

Hercules - The Legendary Journeys - Season 1

It took me awhile to get into this series when it first came out.
I grew up on the old Hercules movies with the great Steve Reeves and later musclemen like Reg Park and Gordon Scott and was initially looking for something similar. But the 'tongue-in-cheek' approach of the series soon grew on me.
The marvellous scenery including lovely, (often) scantily-clad ladies are a bonus. The references to modern-day practices such as business marketing are funny and bring to mind the approach taken in the Asterix series of comic books. The fights are of the 'sock, pow' variety and frequently end up with a whole bar
being demolished. Kevin Sorbo makes a charismatic Hercules and
has obvious appeal to the ladies (my wife thinks he's a hunk).
I bought this on special and it's well worth the price. It's
good entertainment and though not quite 5 stars, definitely deserving of 4.

One of the best tv seasons i have gotton in a long time

I bought this Dvd the other day and was amazed! The episodes video is very nice but there are some times when i noticed some grainy shots. The sound was also good. Now i thought that the extras where very very good. I enjoyed the 8th disk and all the commentarys where awsome. A must have for any DVD collector and fan of the show.

    Great Package Deal!!!!!

For the low, low price you get 5-6 movies and the entire first season of Hercules. Plus it comes with an added computer disc with screen savers and more. 8 discs in all! I really enjoyed it!

Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 2 DVD

Season 2 had some very memorable episodes that are definetely worth watching. I especially love how they take classical Greek mythology and turn it on its head. Yes, it is not accurate or a historical portrayal, but it's damn fun! Love Jason from the Argonauts w/ Hercs mom. More Info about this DVD

Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 3 DVD

The first two seasons are worth seeing. This season is terrible. It has no theme at all, no sense of direction - just a collection of unrelated poor episodes. The worst part is that Hercules second wife, who plays an excellent role, is killed off after only two episodes! What a pity. She was a much better actress than Xena and they killed her. Go figure. Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 4 DVD

I've enjoyed all the seasons of Hercules and this one is no exception. As with the other seasons, the audio and video transfer to DVD is very acceptable. It may not be the best season of Hercules ever, and we don't have anything that compares to the Golden Hind episodes from Season Three. However, this season is still highly entertaining with plenty of creativity and humor from the writers. I even liked seeing Hercules as a pig in Porkules!

I always like seeing Lucy Lawless come back as Xena, and she stars in two episodes, as noted below.

    1. Beanstalks and Bad Eggs: Hercules sets out to find the kidnapped Lianna, and finds her caring for the Harpies' three golden eggs.
    2. Hero's Heart: The goddess of luck, in an effort to erase one painful incident,... More Info about this DVD

Hercules The Legendary Journeys - Season 6 DVD

The entire Hercules series was a slapstick, wacky and wonderfully serious (at times) portrayal of one of the world's greatest legends. This show is just super for all ages and while the fight scenes get a little old, they're still fun to watch because they put a lot of subtle comedy into each and every episode. Hercules offers us insights and layers of relevant issues in any time, plus a whole lot of fun. Good beats evil. Right beats wrong. Any questions? More Info about this DVD
