  • DVD Chisum

Although Chisum stars John Wayne--playing a benign variation on his Red River empire-builder --he's curiously sidelined in this umpteenth retelling of Pat Garrett, William Bonney, and the Lincoln County War. Sam Peckinpah would direct the world-class version of that götterdämmerung, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, three years later. This version, directed by Andrew V. McLaglen in a slightly less broad vein than usual, is just odd--not least because it omits Garrett and Bonney's celebrated final confrontation. Geoffrey Deuel's Billy is a pleasant juvenile who scarcely seems delinquent, let alone murderously psychotic. Glenn Corbett's characterization of Garrett consists mainly of wearing a seriously BIG hat. There's an irksome rivalry for Chisum's perky niece (Pamela McMyler), and a Dominic Frontiere score that's the Western equivalent of elevator music. Chief scoundrel Forrest Tucker seems bored, but Christopher George, Richard Jaeckel, and Bruce Cabot get some juice into their villainy. --Richard T. Jameson

John Wayne meets Billy the Kid

In this 1970 movie, Wayne takes a crack at the Billy the Kid legend. But Billy is a minor character in this movie, as is Pat Garrett. This is a Wayne vehicle pure and simple, replete with boisterous theme, good Wayne lines ("Got any gold?" "I got plenty of lead!") and a few decent fight scenes. Ben Johnson, perhaps the greatest character in the history of the Western, plays his sidekick. Forrest Tucker plays the greedy land baron trying to create a monopoly in the New Mexico territory. Patric Knowles, who so-starred with Errol Flynn in "Robin Hood" and "Charge of the Light Brigade," plays Tucker's business rival. When Tucker has Knowles knocked off, Billy takes to a life of crime. But this movie isn't so much about him as it is about Wayne's role as law keeper in the Wild West. He is the law in this movie, a beefy, good natured paternalist with a heart of gold hidden underneath a leather exterior. Not one of Wayne's best, but a good movie to watch if you want to see vintage John Wayne. Recommended for Saturday afternoon viewings!

The Duke Two fisting fighting through a Western

Chisum was directed by Andrew V McLaglen and Written by Andrew J Fenady.
Chisum was made in 1970 and was release in America on 29 July 1970. It was filmed in location at Durango, Mexico. In 1971 the late John Wayne won the Laurel Award for best Action Performance.

There is a great cast of actors in Chisum which made this movie such a big hit.

    John Wayne as John Chisum
    Forrest Tucker as Lawrence Murphy
    Christopher George as Dan Nodeen
    Ben Johnson as James Pepper
    Glen Corbett as Pat Garrett
    Andrew Prine as Alex McSween
    Bruce Cabot as Sherriff Brady
    Patric Knowless as Henry Turnstall
    Richard Jaeckel as Jess Evans
Lynda Day George as Sue McSween
Geoffrey Deuel as Billy the Kid
    Pamela McMyer as Sallie Chisum
    John Agar as Amos Patton
    Lloyd Battista as Neemo
Robert Donner as Deputy Sheriff Morton
Including William Conrad Narrator for opening credits.

Chisum owns a cattle range in New Mexico but, Lawrence Murphy wants to take over the Town and also is very obsess and wants to take over Chisum range. It is at this point that Chisum makes an alliance with Billy the Kid and Pat Garret.
Here are the Duke John Wayne and the unforgettable Forrest Tucker in their prime. Chisum has everything you expect from a great western movie, including a good script, I enjoy the perfect Panorama view of the Mountains and Fields, the movie sound track was very good it was compose by Dominic Frontiere.
I particularly love the brawl scene between Chisum and Murphy including the gun fights its a real classic a good John Wayne movie to have in your collection. I highly recommend this one, its a real treasure.

I feel fortunate that I grew up at a time when all or most of the big screen stars, which made Hollywood what it is today, were still alive at the time.
It was a time when the whole family could seat down and watch a quality movie.

I enjoyed the act played by Pamela McMyler who plays Chisum niece, Geoffrey Deuel who plays Billy the Kid, plus the whole of the cast that did such a good acting in playing their parts. The custome in this movie looks really authentic for those years in the 1870`s.

My only critic here is that in real life William Bonney was killed by Pat Garrett and here they are the best of friends helping Chisum to fight the brutal criminal Lawrence Murphy.

    uninspired western

As a John Wayne fan, I usually enjoyed all of his movies in one way or another. This means I enjoyed even his bad ones and Chisum proves to be one of his bad ones. Its bad not because anything John Wayne have done or didn't do, he was great in this movie but overall, this film proves to be by the number western and it simply didn't stand out at all. It probably the poorest Hollywood adaption of the Lincoln County War. The script proves to be totally uninspired and on the whole outside of John Wayne, the actors seem to be going through the motion. While the movie entertained to a certain level, most viewers, even fans like myself can feel that there is a certain spirit and drive missing from this movie. The film's villain played by Forrest Tucker wasn't very good and he seem to be hamming up too much. There seem to be unnecessary sideplots involving Billy the Kid, Chisum's daughter and lousy dialogue which distract and turning this western more like soap opera.

The DVD edition of this movie proves to be pretty decent. Nothing to bragged about but nothing cry around. Its a pretty stripped down edition. The film looked pretty good on my regular TV set, the sounds proves to be clear and the commentary that came with this movie was semi-interesting.

Overall, one of John Wayne's poorer efforts, he gave his best but sometimes the material simply cannot be overcome.

    Big Jake DVD

Big Jake is not one of the Duke's classics, but a diverting attempt nonetheless. Everyone seems to think that Jacob McCandles is six-feet under ("I thought you was dead" is a running line throughout), so some bad men kidnap his grandson. They want a piece of the family fortune and will kill to get it. Patrick Wayne, the Duke's own son, plays one of Big Jake's kids, and together they start out after the boy's abductors. Richard Boone makes a worthy adversary to Jake's larger than life figure, and the final confrontation between the two contains some great gritted-teeth dialogue. Maureen O'Hara is barely in the feature, sharing the same fate as Bobby Vinton as the boy's father. He seems to be onscreen just to get shot. --Keith Simanton More Info about this DVD

    The War Wagon DVD

John Wayne and Kirk Douglas make a delightful duo in this comedic Western in which Wayne seeks revenge on a ruthless mine owner (Bruce Cabot) who had him framed and sent to prison. Upon his release, Wayne recruits Douglas in a scheme to raid and rob one of Cabot's gold-laden wagons, despite the fact that Douglas had been offered good money to kill Wayne. He joins Wayne instead (the potential profits being much greater), and they set out to ambush the War Wagon, so named because it's heavily armored, mounted with a Gatling gun, and guarded by a dozen gunmen on horses. Costarring Keenan Wynn and Howard Keel as a wise-cracking Indian, The War Wagon was a Western precursor to the action buddy films of the 1980s and '90s, serving up plenty of exciting action and constant comic relief.... Rio Lobo DVD

The final film by the legendary director Howard Hawks, released in 1970, found him paired with longtime leading man John Wayne in a story slightly similar to their more familiar Rio Bravo and El Dorado. Set at the end of the Civil War, the story finds Wayne playing a Union army colonel who recovers some stolen gold and roots out a traitor. Though a little creaky (Hawks had been making films since 1926), Rio Lobo nevertheless has his trademark, crackling dialogue, appealing characters, and ensemble spirit among the cast. This was a worthy finish to a fantastic career by a first-rank filmmaker. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

    McLintock! DVD

John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara were born to star in "The Taming of the Shrew," and this is the closest they ever got. Wayne plays a cattle baron whose estranged wife (O'Hara) wants a divorce. The film is basically one long, funny brawl between them, ending with a mud pit melee and Wayne publicly spanking O'Hara, which doesn't look quite so politically correct anymore. This is no great shakes--director Andrew V. McLaglen is simply hosting a party here--but it's worth a few chuckles and the stars' broad performances. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

    Rio Bravo DVD

When it comes down to naming the best Western of all time, the list usually narrows to three completely different pictures: John Ford's The Searchers, Howard Hawks's Red River, and Hawks's Rio Bravo. About the only thing they all have in common is that they all star John Wayne. But while The Searchers is an epic quest for revenge and Red River is a sweeping cattle-drive drama ("Take 'em to Missouri! Yeeee-hah!"), Rio Bravo is on a much more modest scale. Basically, it comes down to Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne), his sobering-up alcoholic friend Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and deputy-sidekick Stumpy (Walter Brennan), sittin' around in the town jail, drinkin' black cofee, shootin' the breeze, and occasionally,...
