DVD NYPD Blue - Season 2
Originally broadcast in 1994, the second season of NYPD Blue was disrupted by the departure of star David Caruso (Detective John Kelly) after just four episodes, under apparently less than amicable circumstances. He was ably replaced as Detective Sipowicz's partner by Jimmy Smits as the smoother Detective Bobby Simone, and the series managed not to miss a beat.
More streamlined and downbeat than its predecessor, Hill Street Blues (also created by Steven Bochco), NYPD Blue continued second time around to mix near-the-knuckle detective work to foil New York's scummiest with more character- and relationship-based drama. Although it's regrettable that its ethnic minority characters, such as Lieutenant Fancy, are increasingly marginalized here, the series is more comfortable--and even has fun--with regular characters such as the nervy Detective Medavoy and his on-off paramour Donna Abandando. Andy Sipowicz's simmering, tough-nosed recovering alcoholic is increasingly and amusingly put to the test in a number of situations, including: a murder investigation in a gay bar; being sung to at his own wedding by Nic Turturro's Detective Martinez; and a love scene in the shower in which we experience the dubious pleasure of seeing his bare rear.
New female introductions, such as the strong but sympathetic Detective Lesniak, also helped to shake up the series with a much-needed estrogen boost. There's also fun to be had in spotting a number of guest appearances by up-and-coming actors destined to make it in their own right such as Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Debra Messing (Will & Grace).
The DVD set contains a number of extras, primarily a one-hour documentary in which the cast and crew discuss the series episode by episode, the self-congratulatory mood broken only by some subtle digs at departing star David Caruso (apparently, he walked straight off the set following his final take into a waiting limo without any farewells). There's also a small piece paying tribute to the music of theme-writer Mike Post and an item covering the relationship between Sipowicz and Assistant DA Sylvia Costas, in whose marriage this series culminates. --David Stubbs
Outstanding in all aspects. My favorite TV series over the years. Quality of the product is perfect. I can't wait for Season 3.
AWESOME!!!
I love NYPD Blue and this is the season that brings in Jimmy Smitts as Bobby Simone. (sigh)
Oh, I have been waiting for NYPD Blue Season 3 to come out and have finally received news that it will be coming out in January 2006. Keep your fingers crossed!!
Hasn't lost its edge
I bought boxed sets one and two for my husband for Christmas last year. It had been a while since either of us had seen the early seasons of this show as they've never been repeated here in the UK since their first run.
We were quickly drawn back into the world of the New York detectives and spent a series of blissful nights enjoying revisiting all the moments we'd half forgotten. The series still holds its own against more recent examples of the genre, and certainly hasn't lost anything in the years since it was first shown. Gritty, poignant, dramatic and with charismatic characters you love and love to hate.
The special features on both sets were impressive - interesting and informative. Although I rapidly got tired of hearing them diss David Caruso, much as he seems to have deserved it with his obnoxious behaviour on set. Some of the interviews overlapped, but that seems to be common on most DVDs out there. For all that, I wasn't disappointed by the features, which is often the case, and found them well worth watching.
Enthralled with these, I blithely went online intending to order season three there and then. And to my dismay found it was nowhere to be found. Had never been released. I confess I don't understand this decision. Were it to be released tomorrow I'd snap it up.
Hopefully the rumours that it might finally be released for this Christmas will be true. It would make my gift buying for hubby so much more simple!
I watched about 3 episodes of the original CSI and I thought they were so boring, I couldn't understand all the hype. So, they figure out through investigating the evidence "who done it". I guess it was just way too dark for me or it might have been the characters didn't intrigue me. Then I picked up a disk with C.S.I. Miami and I was hooked.
I know people say they don't like David but I find his character intriguing. I guess I like it that he has more depth then any of the characters that I saw on CSI. Truth I like all the characters on CSI Miami.
might have to try CSI again More Info about this DVD Actor(s): David Caruso DVD Release Date: Released the 04 January 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

Law & Order's third year marked a transitional one for the top-rated drama. In 1992, Jerry Orbach (Prince of the City) joined the cast. His Det. Lenny Briscoe would turn out to be one of its most enduring characters. After Sgt. Phil Ceretta (Paul Sorvino) is shot by a gun dealer in episode eight ("Prince of Darkness"), Briscoe teams up with Det. Mike Logan (Chris Noth) in the next ("Point of View"). It wasn't meant to be a permanent change (Ceretta was injured, not killed), but the two would continue to beat the streets until Logan's departure in 1995 (Orbach, meanwhile, would remain part of the Law & Order universe until his passing in 2004).
The line-up was otherwise the same: Capt. Donald Craven (Dann Florek), ADA Paul Robinette (Richard Brooks), ADA Benjamin... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Jerry Orbach DVD Release Date: Released the 24 May 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

Dramatically speaking, the third season of The Shield is dysfunctional in the "best" sense of the word. Relationships fester in a quagmire of personal and professional conflict, and clashing agendas inspire some of finest episodes of this volatile series. Det. Mackey (Michael Chiklis) struggles to save his crumbling family (including two autistic children) while his strike team endures internal tensions over their secret stash of stolen drug money. Shane (Walton Goggins) clashes with teammate Tavon (Brian J. White) with near-fatal consequences, and his demanding fiancée tests his loyalty to Mackey. Capt. Aceveda (Benito Martinez) suffers unspeakable humiliation en route to city council promotion, engaging Wyms (CCH Pounder) in a battle of wills over proper command of "The... On March 12, 2002, The Shield burst onto the FX network like an incendiary grenade, and basic cable TV would never be the same. Creator Shawn Ryan's uncompromising police drama pushed the limits of basic-cable permissiveness, bridging the relative discretion of NYPD Blue and the HBO liberties of The Wire. Without exception, these 13 episodes justify their hype, focusing on pugnacious detective Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis), whose amoral Strike Team employs dubious tactics in the crime-ridden (and fictional) Farmington district of Los Angeles. Mackey and his maverick partners are at odds with seasoned detectives and beat cops, escalating tensions with precinct Capt. Aceveda (Benito Martinez), a Latino with flexible scruples and a political agenda.

It has not taken long for Without a Trace to emerge from the shadows of CSI and become a ratings force in its own right. Jerry Bruckheimer produced both series, and both feature the-face-is-familiar character actors with extensive and diverse resumes who have been catapulted to primetime stardom. Jack Malone, head of a crack FBI missing persons unit, is the Australian-born Anthony LaPaglia's breakout role after years of portraying enough Italian mobsters and criminals to populate a season of The Sopranos. LaPaglia was a surprise Golden Globe Award-winner for this inaugural season. Without a Trace is instantly arresting. "The clock is ticking" in each episode, as Malone and company race against time to find a missing person. "After 48 hours," Malone explains...
