This one definitely falls into the category of "what were they thinking?" Robbie Coltrane made this part his in the original British series and this American remake does nothing but muddy things up. Whereas Coltrane was truly offensive but brilliant, Pastorelli is forced to turn the character into a softer "likable" version to fit the network sensibilities. If you saw the original, this one is unbearable. If you didn't, go get it now that it's being released on DVD.
Great series, deserved a chance
Had the American version of Cracker been produced in a better era of television, it would have been given the chance to gain an audience (as MASH was) and would have become a classic. It was a wonderfully engaging show with refreshingly complex characters and storylines. Robert Pastorelli creates an brilliantly dark and infuriatingly charming version of Fitz. If you like good, intelligent mysteries with plots and characters that draw you in and keep you wanting more, you'll love Cracker.
Admittedly, this not the British version. Few American versions of British shows meet the quality of their predecessors. It was a formidable task to bring this show to American television. I think this series tried to come fairly close to the quality of British Cracker while attempting to be acceptable to U.S. viewers. It wasn't given the chance to succeed. I don't think it's fair to compare the the U.S. and British versions, but I'm sure many fans of the original series will.
Cracker allows its characters to be human and flawed, intelligent and fascinating. I miss this show; glad to see it on DVD. This DVD contains the series' 2-part premiere episode "A True Romance." I hope more episodes follow.
The compelling Cracker is among the more exciting British mystery series from the 1990s, featuring a hero so flawed he's just as likely to end up inside a jail cell as outside chasing bad guys. Robbie Coltrane, perhaps best known for playing Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, is unconventional psychologist Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald, a rotund teacher who exhorts students to look within their dark hearts and who gleefully embraces his own addictions to gambling, booze, and nicotine.
Caught in a downward spiral, Fitz sneers as his debts mount and his wife (Barbara Flynn) leaves him, but he rallies when a favorite student is slashed to death on a train in series debut "The Mad Woman in the Attic." The suspect, a longtime amnesiac, is put through grueling police... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Robbie Coltrane DVD Release Date: Released the 14 October 2003 Usually ships in 24 hours

Harrison Ford lends his solid, perpetually disgruntled presence to Hollywood Homicide, an action comedy in which he's paired with the squinty eyes and peaches-and-cream complexion of Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down, O). Radical French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard would appreciate this complete deconstruction of the buddy-cop flick genre; basic cinematic elements (mismatched partners, a hard-ass superior riding them, arguments about who's going to drive, arguments about intuition vs. diligent detective work, the bad cop who killed Hartnett's father, etc.) have been scrambled and slapped together with no concern for coherence, making clear their innately artificial nature. Sex scenes and car chases come out of nowhere and disappear without consequence, providing arbitrary... Cracker: Series 1 was fine--a terrific premiere and two interesting sequels introduced freelance police psychologist Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald (Robbie Coltrane) and his family and colleaguesbut series 2 is unexpectedly and vastly superior. The three miniseries included on these discs are exemplary thrillers (even better than the first trio), but the real leap forward is in the stories' deepening complexity and fascinating intertwining of Fitz's strained relationships and work.
"To Be a Somebody" begins where series 1 left off. Fitz and his wife, Judith (Barbara Flynn), and two kids are living together again, but the rotund profiler--still juggling multiple addictions to booze, gambling, nicotine, and overall self-destructiveness--is on a new, downward spiral. His name is... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Robbie Coltrane DVD Release Date: Released the 24 February 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

Helen Mirren's Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison, the only female DCI on an old boy's club London homicide squad, is like a phantom lurking around the edges of the action while the men rush through their latest murder case, joshing and winking in the kind of male camaraderie the cop genre has celebrated for decades. When DCI Shefford dies of a sudden heart attack, Tennison demands to take over. Despite her superintendent's resistance ("Give her this case and she'll start expecting more."), she becomes the squad's first woman to head a murder investigation. Scrutinized at every moment by her superior officers, Tennison is faced with a case that spirals out from a single murder to a serial spree, a second-in-command who undermines her authority and her investigation at every turn, a...
