The birthday girl (Marisa Tomei) seizes upon Ramu's cribbed aphorisms and leads Ramu into a career as a sex guru. "The Guru" is about an Indian man who immigrates to the United States with dreams of becoming a famous actor, but winds up in the New Age "guru" circuit. It's funny stuff, and there are some good scenes. The selling point of the movie is the dance scenes combining "Bollywood" and "Hollywood." "Bollywood" is the term given to Indian cinema where extended dance and song numbers take center stage. The pleasure of the "The Guru" is seeing American actors just jump into Indian song and dance. It's also fun to see Indian actors do American dance. "Grease" fans should find much to like. The lead actor imagines himself as a John Travolta type, with many references to the musical. There are a few drawbacks. The dance scenes weren't quite up to Indian or American standards - you couldn't see much choreography. The films also sagged in some places - some scenes were just slow. Otherwise, a funny film with lots going for it. I recommend it.

The songs were priceless and the entire story was hillarious!!! If you've ever watched any Hindi movies, you know exactly where this ties in... It's hillarious, and you crack up the entire time...
You MUST watch this if you're into comedy...

Sweet and very funny
In this cute adult comedy, Ramu (Jimi Mistry) leaves India to seek fame and fortune in New York City, only to find the streets aren't really paved with gold. He is innocently hired to be in an adult film and his costar is the lovely Sharonna (Heather Graham), a pro who's got a heart of gold. He accidentally gains a reputation as a love guru, with the help of an air-headed socialite (Marisa Tomei), but finds true love with Sharonna.
The plot may sound silly, but thanks to the considerable charm of Jimi Mistry and the clever script, it's really quite good. Mistry plays the wide-eyed innocent perfectly, and is handsome and charismatic enough to carry off the role of media darling. Graham has her best role to date as the endearing adult film star/girl-next-door. Tomei gives a good performance as the silly rich girl without becoming tiresome. Michael McKean almost steals the show (as usual) as the sleazy movie director. The fish-out-of-water, East meets West story has a lot of laughs and some touching moments as well.
Monsoon Wedding is a return to form for Mira Nair, director of 1988's Salaam Bombay! Nair's gift for observation of the everyday and her love for her characters make for a delightful film, which spins a web of family relationships that knit and break during a wedding at a perfect pace. The excellent performances exceed the often stereotypical roles on offer (including the incomparable Nasiruddin Shah as the harassed father, Kulbhushan Kharbanda as the comic uncle, and Shefali Chaya as the orphaned cousin). Nair's sympathetic eye for the unnoticed and the harassed is at its best with the tender romance between the servant and Dube (Vijay Raaz), the marigold-munching, upwardly mobile wedding coordinator, who brings pathos and humor to the often unseen servant classes.
