DVD An Evening with Harry Belafonte & Friends
An Evening with Harry Belafonte and Friends contains the full broadcast of a 1997 PBS special, an exciting program that introduced the consummate performer to a new generation of admirers. The legendary actor-activist-recording artist offers fresh evidence of his acclaimed talent for capturing and re-appraising the pure character of folk music through elegant pop forms. Belafonte's classic material from his bestselling years in the 1950s and early '60s is represented here with a vivacious "Matilda" (complete with audience participation), a handsome reading of the immensely popular "Jamaica Farewell," and a snazzy, gospel-flavored "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)."
The big draw, however, is Belafonte himself, his charismatic blend of raw, masculine joy, spiritual gravity, intellectual force, and measured dignity--all quite visible in his delivery on such mythic material as "We Are the Wave," the nostalgic "Try to Remember," and the unsettling, if gorgeously provocative, "Dangerous Times." --Tom Keogh
Review(s): DVD An Evening with Harry Belafonte & Friends
High quality
First of all I have to point out, that this DVD is not region 1 coded! Expected for a very long time - a video recording of a Harry Belafonte concert. For anybody who likes Harry Belafonte this DVD is a must. It contains fourteen new and nostalgic songs in a new arrangement in a high quality performance. In addition with an outstanding image quality (although a little bit noisy) this program is a real entertainment. Even the sound is better than I have stated during some live performances.
Unfortunately this DVD was not issued in 16:9 format, although part of the cover let us think that.

I really enjoyed this reunion concert when I watched it on PBS over 20 years ago, and am delighted to find the complete concert finally available (the VHS version, as other reviews have noted, has several numbers cut).
For those not familiar with the background, this concert was recorded in 1981 at an outdoor theater in California. Present were the then-current Kingston Trio lineup of Bob Shane, Roger Gambill and George Grove, as well as former Trio members Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds and John Stewart.
Each lineup of the Trio performs several numbers. We get to here several of their signature tunes--"Tom Dooley," "Scotch and Soda," "Greenback Dollar," and "MTA" among them.
Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary makes a special appearance and joins the trio for two numbers. ... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 13 May 2003 Usually ships in 24 hours

The importance of being earnest is vividly illustrated in Carry It On, which chronicles the enduring work of folksingers Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers, who at the time of this comprehensive, 80-minute documentary had already marked their 40th anniversary as a trio. There are nearly three dozen tunes (or parts of tunes) here, ranging from "Lemon Tree" in 1962 to several new performances from '03. And while their earlier music now sounds somewhat tame, even quaint (or, in the case of "Puff the Magic Dragon," cringe-inducing), at the time, Peter, Paul and Mary's pro-civil rights, anti-Vietnam War stances were considered rather radical, helping pave the way for Bob Dylan (whose "Blowin' in the Wind" they performed at the same '63 rally in Washington, D.C. where Dr.... What started as a suggestion for Paul Simon to play a concert in New York's Central Park blossomed, on September 19, 1981, as a full-blown Simon and Garfunkel reunion after an 11-year hiatus, and now proves a priceless snapshot of two of America's greatest folk-rock performers. (It's also the rightful bookend to Simon and Garfunkel's acoustic Live from New York City, 1967.)
Performed with a who's-who of East Coast session aces before a record-setting crowd of half a million fans, The Concert in Central Park finds its stars just shy of their 40th birthdays and very much in their primes, their voices sweet and pure and their playing relaxed, perfectly in tune and in synch. The show features a mix of S&G and solo Simon tunes, including all the songs that appear on the CD,... Some things never change--and when it comes to the Everly Brothers, that's definitely a good thing. Seen here performing at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1983 following a lengthy and acrimonious split, Don and Phil barely miss a beat. They were in their mid-40s, and performing together for the first time in some 10 years (Phil had smashed a guitar and walked offstage in what you might call a fit of pique), but their harmonies are as perfect as ever, to the point where it's hard to tell who's singing which part. Backed by a band of crack British musicians, they run through some 21 songs, including a dizzying array of hits. "Crying in the Rain," "Wake Up Little Susie," "Cathy's Clown," "Bye Bye Love": the Everlys may not have written most of their tunes, but they sure know how to...
