Max Fleischer's Landmark on DVD!
Reviewer: Jerry Beck Excelent examples of Fleischers earliest films, with a well done background on Fleischer. The prints are superb(or at least the best we'll ever get),many are tinted. and come with the "classic" Winston Sharples Ko-Ko music (added for TV release in the 1950s).
My only request is: more of this wonderful Fleischer collection. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
AN AMAZING PRODUCTION

" Max Fleischer's Famous Out of the InkWell" Vols. 1 and 2 is a very inspired and wonderfully undertaken venture. Mr. Pointer has not only presented us with the animation stylings of Max Fleischer and the directorial talents of his brother Dave Fleischer, but has included some biographical information in the form of an introduction/narration about the history of the Fleischer brothers. Mr. Pointer has also included insights from Berny Wolf (an animator working for the Fleischers, and Max's nephew Bernard Fleischer.
As far as the visual and audio quality of this production, to quote Jerry Beck (Animation Authority/Historian) "The print quality is the best...and the transfers are excellent." Ray Pointer also makes the very best use of sound effects and music (by Winston Sharples, Fleischer cartoon music composer) which, to quote animation instructor Brian LeMay, "...didn't intrude on the original animation..." and gives each cartoon a wonderfully authentic period feel.
The fact that the original "Out of the InkWell" releases on VHS (which were the inspiration for the DVD for Volumes 1 and 2...go to [a website]...won the "GOLD AWARD in the Entertainment Category for the Houston International Film and Video Festival in 2001 and 2003" is only the icing on the cake.

I have the revised edition of this set and it was money well spent. The Stero-optical Process is always fun but the most overlooked quality of these gems is how they really get inside of you. Some call these cheesy and some are but cartoons like "Somewhere in Dreamland," "Play Safe," and "The Little Dutch Mill" are impossible to watch without tearing up. Now DISNEY cartoons are cheesy! They're just pointless romping and frollicing through daisies. These Fleischer shorts have morals and messages that really get to you. Ub Iwerks was one of the greatest animators of the silent and early sound eras: he animated "Steamboat Willie" and other early Disney shorts virtually by himself. But the films he produced at his own studio after breaking with Walt Disney in 1930 lack the vitality of his earlier work. Bosko is a great cartoon character, but the Warner Brothers Studio stopped making him in 1934. When Foxy and Roxy did the first Merrie Melodie bosko had stopped being made, bosko is very funny so i think this dvd is gonna get alot of money.Bosko the talk ink kid was the first Bosko cartoon and the first warner bros cartoon.it was made in 1929 but disney did ther first cartoon in 1928 so disney got a head start in ther cartoon making.So mickey and bosko were not made at the same time but they both were great. i have sean the first mickey cartoon and the first bosko cartoon.you can see bosko the talk ink kid on the looney tunes goiden colliction on disc 4 and the frist merrie melodie on disc 4.bosko is great so i hope the pepol hwo buy it love it. Felix the Cat was the first animated superstar, and these early shorts reveal the source of the character's phenomenal popularity. Animator Otto Messmer created Felix for "Feline Follies," a one-shot cartoon designed to fill a gap in an installment of the Paramount Screen Magazine. Messmer had learned how to use mime and expressions by studying the films of Charlie Chaplin, and even in his relatively crude debut film, Felix seems alive.
