DVD Mask (Director's Cut)
Peter Bogdanovich directed this sensitive and moving story about a teenage boy, Rocky (Eric Stoltz), who lives with severe facial deformities and poor prognosis for survival beyond childhood. The film concentrates on that threshold-of-adulthood period familiar to past and present 16-year-olds, folding together common experiences of youth (love, hassles with mom, a desire to travel) with the special burdens endured by the hero. Stoltz, absolutely unrecognizable under lots and lots of prosthetic makeup, is quite good, as are Cher (as Rocky's mother) and Sam Elliott (Rocky's father figure). More than a tearjerker, the film is a genuine celebration of all that is most precious in life, even more to those who have nothing to take for granted. --Tom Keogh
Eric Stoltz's performance is incredible. Here is a young actor who really understands his character. However, Cher is so cautiously lit and photographed, as to make her look like a Movie Star from the 40's. One performance washes out the other. All the supporting cast is fine. It's actually a damn good film. One wishes Cher had the legendary Balls she's been credited with and said: Hey, Mr. Bogdonavitch, "I aint Joan Crawford!" Guess she didn't have the guts. Her performance is still adequate. It's not a classic - but Rocky's interaction with the blind girl is most memorable.
WATCH THIS MOVIE NOW!
This has got to be one of the most heartwreching and inspirational movies I've seen.
First of all, I love Based on a True Story movies because I just find them interesting. Such movies like this one, Donnie Brasco and many, many others.
Anyway, this movie is something everybody should see before they die. One thing that I was very impressed with, is the fact that this guy has a very horrible difurging (<---spell check) disease and he has a very upbeat personality.
I got out of that, nobody what happens to us in life, you can always keep a smile on your face.
The Rock is cool!!
SPOILERS
I watch this on tv when it comes on now and then...
Sort of sad yet inspirational as others reviewers have said...
Rocky Dennis played by Eric Stoltz has a messed up face--
or "lionitis"...he overcomes mocking and teasing by believing in himself, and not taking no crap from anyone.. he's part of a motorcycle gang--more like Cher who plays his mother is...
Rocky meets a blond blind girl who "sees" Rock for who
he really is....
One scene is cool though...as Rocky is walking by in the
school hallway- he overhears another guy bad mouthing him!!
So Rocky walks up to him, and slams him against the locker
saying, "I'll take off my mask if you take yours off
you son of a ___ "!!! I don't blame him....
How the make up for Rocky was done I have no clue,
but it's amazing...!! The only part of Erik Stoltz
we can see in the movie of his real face is his eyes...
Based on the harrowing account of whistle blower Karen Silkwood, this 1983 film directed by Mike Nichols (The Graduate, Postcards from the Edge) is as much a character study of a woman galvanized by injustice as a story of the dangers of nuclear power and the extremes of corporate greed. When Karen discovers unsafe conditions and reckless protocol at the plant where she works, her actions in uncovering the dangers that lie at the plant not only cause a rift between her and her lover (Kurt Russell) and her best friend (Cher), but they threaten her very life. Streep gives yet another bravura performance as a wild child in Oklahoma forced to confront the harsh realities of her life, and the supporting cast, from Cher to Russell to Diana Scarwid is first rate. This true story of... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Meryl Streep - Kurt Russell - Cher - Craig T. Suspect is an endearingly silly suspense movie with an excellent cast. Cher stars as Washington, D.C., public defender Kathleen Riley, who is beginning to question the meaning of her career. (Before you prejudge, she's perfectly believable as a lawyer. It's the overtly Irish moniker she can't quite pull off.) A murder victim is found in the Potomac, a mute homeless man (Liam Neeson) stands accused, and Riley gets the case. Can it be that the homeless guy is innocent? Can it be that this whole thing just might go right to the top? I don't want to spoil it for you, but I think you know which way the smart money is betting. Luckily Dennis Quaid is on the scene, playing that rarest of creatures, the heroic congressional lobbyist. Suspect has a refreshingly cheerful disregard for... In the early '60s, nomadic single mom Mrs. Flax (Cher) packs up her two daughters, Charlotte (Winona Ryder) and Kate (Christina Ricci), in a beat-up Chevy wagon and moves to small-town Massachusetts. Preteen Kate is obsessed with swimming, while 15-year-old Charlotte is searching for ways to rebel against her mom (and mom's flirty ways). The route she chooses is to become fascinated with Catholicism and all its arcane rituals, even though the family is Jewish. Her coming of age is handled with plenty of Wonder Years-style voiceovers as she fantasizes about Christ, the saints, the Pope, the Church--all things Catholic. Cracks in her religious armor begin to appear, though, in the form of a hunky local guy (Michael Schoeffling) who works at the convent. Meanwhile, her mom strikes... Remember the outfit Cher wore to the Oscars when she won an Academy Award for her performance in this 1987 film? Ay-yi-yi. The actress' more retiring character in this infectious comedy leaps several psychological hurdles just giving her hair a permanent. But then the original screenplay by John Patrick Shanley (Joe Versus the Volcano) is a wonderful, gently satirical tale of an Italian-American family dealing with repression and dissatisfaction against a backdrop of cultural expectations. Cher is focused and funny as a widow who feels she should marry an older fellow (Danny Aiello), but then falls for his black-sheep brother (Nicolas Cage). Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia are perfect as her parents, and John Mahoney (of TV's Frasier) has a memorable, small role as a... Jack Nicholson was born to play the devil, and in George Miller's adaptation of John Updike's novel he plays it for all he's worth. As a wolfish womanizer summoned by three bored women in a picturesque New England town, he's sating all of his appetites with a rakish grin. Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer play the women who discover their untapped magical powers by accident. The smart and sexy singles, out of place in the conservatism of their village, find happiness, however briefly, in the arms and bed of the libidinous devil, but he's got his own ulterior motives. Miller revels in the sensual display of sex, food, and magic, whipping up a storm of effects that finally get out of hand in an overblown ending. It's a handsome film with strong performances all around, but the mix...
