DVD Loose Cannons
Loose Cannons centers around a detective named Fielding (Dan Aykroyd) with amazing analytic powers--and a multiple personality disorder. Partnered with a hard-nosed vice cop named Stern (Gene Hackman), they're on the trail of a pornographic Nazi film that proves the impending German chancellor is a former Nazi. Fielding and Stern have to cope not only with German bad guys, the FBI, and the Israeli secret service, but also Fielding's schizophrenic breaks, which crop up at moments of high stress, transforming him into Captain Kirk or other pop culture icons. It seems like the script of Loose Cannons was originally intended for someone with stronger mimetic skills than Aykroyd--not that it would have made much difference. Not a single moment of the movie makes any sense; the awkward blend of comedy and crime thriller never meshes. Also featuring Dom DeLuise, Ronny Cox, and Nancy Travis. --Bret Fetzer
This is an excellent movie. This is the movie that 'Lethal Weapon' should have been! I first saw it in the movies, of course as soon as it hit video... I grabbed that! Partnership, Purpose, Panic, Pestulance, and Perserverance. It just won't get old, no matter how many times you watch it(believe me, I KNOW ;-) rent it, and you'll want to buy it. I'm still waiting for the DVD! Trust Me! One viewing and you'll be hooked!
Amusing, but not great
I have a feeling I'm in the minority, but I actually like this movie and have been looking for it for a long time. It's certainly not incredible film-making, but it's fun and silly in a laid-back kind of way. If you like your humour on the goofy side, this one might appeal to you. Picture Sherlock Holmes belonging in an insane asylum with Dr. Watson along just as much to keep an eye on him as to be his sidekick. DeLuise, Ackroyd and Hackman are always enjoyable even when the plot doesn't quite live up to standards.
Not that great
This movie is slightly funny. The only person that really adds anything to it is DeLuise, and this is only once in a while. Akyrod's impressions of others are not that funny at all. Hackman does not add too much, but alas, like many of the films he is in, the film would not be half as good, or bad, as it is without him.
Since John Ritter is my all-time favorite actor, I decided to get this movie. I received it for X-mas and have since then seen it four times! The plot is simple: Bob and Nick need to bring a glass of water to some aliens or else the world is doomed. On their way to Washington D.C., (where they would meet the aliens) they fight off some clowns, shoot at some Russians, meet Nick's dad who recently changed his (or her...) sexuality, etc, etc.
OK, this movie may sound a little too stange for many people, but for those of you who like wacky comedies, go ahead and buy it. John is hilarious in it! I was rolling on the floor laughing throughout the movie. It is one of my favorite movies, if not my favorite. Recommended! Kelsey Grammer stars as the captain of a rust-bucket submarine who is fighting for his career by proving his skills in a contest against far more sophisticated ships. Rob Schneider provides comic support as an uptight ensign, and Lauren Holly plays an officer who has to fight her own will-they-accept-me-because-I'm-a-woman anxieties. The film didn't do well at the box office, but it is actually pretty funny, Grammer is enjoyable, and the above-the-water/below-the-water action sequences are as good as any in most submarine films. --Tom KeoghMore Info about this DVD Director(s): David S. I.Q. has all the elements of a classic romantic comedy. Certainly Meg Ryan has demonstrated she has the stuff for funny love with films such as When Harry Met Sally... and Sleepless in Seattle, and director Fred Schepisi's Roxanne ranks among top contemporary romantic comedies. Even though Tim Robbins received acclaim for dramatic work in Jacob's Ladder and The Shawshank Redemption, his early comedic work shouldn't be forgotten (well, maybe Howard the Duck, but not the hilarious Sure Thing). And Walter Matthau? No explanation needed.
Combine I.Q.'s talent with its fresh story and it charms. Garage mechanic Ed Walters (Robbins) is captivated at first glimpse by pretty, perky Catherine (Ryan), a gifted academic who lives... The heroes of 1899 are brought to life with the help of some expensive special effects in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. From the pages of Victorian literature come Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll (and his alter ego Mr. Hyde), Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, an Invisible Man, Mina Harker (from Dracula), and the hunter Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), all brought together to combat an evil megalomaniac out to conquer the world. Hardly an original plot, but perhaps that's fitting for a movie sewn together like Frankenstein's monster. The movie rushes from one frenetic battle to another, replacing sense with spectacle--Nemo's submarine rising from the water, a warehouse full of zeppelins bursting into flame, Venice collapsing into its own canals; flashy, dumb, and completely...
