DVD House of 1000 Corpses
It's sick! It's twisted! It's House of 1,000 Corpses, and it's more fun than a wholesome bowl of "Agatha Crispies"! Dropped by two studios (Universal and MGM) and doomed to obscurity until Lions Gate Films gave it a limited theatrical release, Rob Zombie's gonzo horror flick is a blood-spattered throwback to the gore-fests of the '70s, lending new meaning to the term "box-office gross." Most critics misunderstood this unbridled exercise in graphic style and violence, but for devoted horror buffs it's a refreshing rebuttal to the comparatively "polite" frights of the post-Scream era. While paying homage to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left, Motel Hell, and other gory classics, Zombie's ramshackle plot (two young couples are terrorized by an inbred family of homicidal maniacs) lacks a crucial sense of dread, but his pastiche of vivid colors, grainy fetish-films, and photo-negative imagery is guaranteed to hold your attention. A bona-fide cult item, this House is definitely worth a visit... if you dare. --Jeff Shannon
I really don't understand any of the negative reviews. Perhaps these reviewers should not be watching horror films, judging by some of the comments. This was a truly frightening film and Rob Zombie is to be lauded in his first time effort. He seems like an old pro at it. I look forward to many more thrills from him in the future.
SICK AND TWISTED MOVIE!!!!!!!!
House of 1000 Corpses is just plain sick and twisted!!!!!! Its almost like being in one of those haunted houses that they put up for halloween!!!!! I like that Rob Zombie takes us to hell literally!!!!! When a bunch of kids go out to find this mysterious Doctor Satan they come across a weird and sick family that has plans for them by killing them and making sure that no one knows about them!!!!!!!! The movie is awesome and has its shares of scares too!!!!!! GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!
Lost a few brain cells, but who needed 'em?
House of 1000 Corpses is an over-the-top hack `n slash flick full of dead bodies, half-dead bodies, freaks, geeks and yet, somehow oddly fascinating. Written and directed by Rob Zombie (of the now defunct White Zombie metal band), the movie plays out like one of his music videos. I'm not a big horror fan but I've read a lot of reviews AND heard from friends about what this movie was about. I've also learned that this movie was supposed to be a very different type of horror flick than what most people are accustomed to. This is not Ju-On or Scream. It has a couple cups of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (don't know if the critics are referring to the new version or the old one) and a few gallons of blood to boot.
The story? I didn't read the synopsis beforehand so I ASSUMED it was about fighting zombies. Oops. 2 young couples (not sure what their age is supposed to be) are off in the boondocks and finding themselves faced-to-faced with the Firefly clan, a family of psychotic murderers who love to turn their victims into `art'. The element to note, here, is that this movie is about the Firefly family, NOT the 2 young, victimized couples! Certainly, the good guys do NOT win here. With over 1000+ corpses and the fact that they are hiding the infamous Dr. Satan, there is no stopping the Firefly clan. The movie stars Sig Haig as Captain Spaulding (my favorite character of the whole movie and he had the most personality), Sheri Moon Zombie as Baby Firefly, Bill Moseley as Otis Firefly (head sadistic chopper), and Karen Black as the oddly hot Mother Firefly.
Mr. Zombie certainly has a style to his work. His use of old grainy black `n white footage and different photo imagery keeps your eyes glued on the screen. In a way, it's very much like watching a White Zombie music video. On the other hand, this is a straight forward slasher (well, they don't really slash, but they certainly do hack). There's no tension or suspense whatsoever, unless you are sitting there waiting for the next person to be hacked up and HOW they will be hacked up. I did sense that there is a whole culture out there that is obsessed with this sort of culture. Due to that, this will cater to the fans who love this sort of thing.
Keep in mind that this movie is for those who love hacker flicks. The most negativity, from what I've read and heard, are from those who go in with expectations. This is a cult film, just as the Blair Witch Project was a cult favorite. This felt very much like a B-grade film and from what I know of Rob Zombie, that's EXACTLY how it's supposed to be. Anybody remember Silence of the Lambs? Remember the part when Hannibal escapes and the cops find the doctor (or whoever) strung up in the air? Just add dark lighting, the crazy dark atmosphere and you have House of 1000 Corpses. I admit, I found this movie utterly odd, yet addicting to watch. I lost a few brain cells in the whole process but for what it's worth, it is nice to have a mindless slasher flick out there every now and then.
Homicidal maniacs have a field day in Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects, an ultraviolent spin-off from Zombie's critically reviled 2003 debut, House of 1,000 Corpses. As Zombie continues to cultivate his name-brand variety of extreme horror and splatter-film homage, he definitely takes his place among connoisseurs of carnage. In the case of The Devil's Rejects, several characters from 1,000 Corpses return for another marathon of mayhem, as the murderous Firefly family (led by Sid Haig as the maniacal "Captain Spaulding") turn their bloody wrath against hostages in a fleabag motel, while the local sheriff (William Forsythe) plots revenge against them for the killing of his brother. Before their inevitable showdown, Zombie has plenty of fun--perhaps a little... Okay, by all means STRANGELAND is nowhere near a perfect movie. It's not very bloody and the plot is kinda' weak in spots. That aside, there happens to be alot of fu@ked up moments in the movie that should please all Horror fans alike. I hadn't seen this movie in a couple of years so I decided to buy it again. STRANGELAND brings back some good memories of being a rebelious teenager. During a time before the whole Rap/Rock scene was coming to be, it's good to hear a soundtrack with a Heavy Metal back bone! The music is loud, the killings are strange and over all the movie happens to be an enjoyable experiance. Horror fans, check it out! Saw opens with a gruesome scenario: Two men are chained to the walls of a grimy bathroom with a bloody corpse lying on the floor between them. Tape recordings tell them that one of the men has to kill the other, or his wife and child will die. The corpse is holding a gun in one hand, but it's out of reach...but whoever has locked these two up has thoughtfully provided a hacksaw that can't cut through the heavy chain, but might cut through a little flesh and bone. From there, Saw jumps back and forth as the two men slowly unravel how they know each other and that their tormentor is one of those all-knowing, all-capable serial killers (it goes without saying that Saw is hugely influenced by Seven and the movies of Dario Argento), a fellow known as Jigsaw who... The 2003 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre adheres to the pure and simple slasher movie formula: Introduce a gaggle of sexy young people, make vague gestures to distinguish them--Jessica Biel (Summer Catch) wants to get married and doesn't like pot, so she's our moral compass--then start hacking them to pieces one by one. The visual palette includes grimy crucified dolls, fly-specked pig carcasses, body parts floating in murky jars, a tobacco-chewing redneck sheriff, and many slender beams of sunlight cutting through dank, dusty interiors. The camera lovingly photographs Biel's tank-topped bosom and sculpted abs as she's running in terror from a bloated, chainsaw-wielding, human-skin-wearing maniac. This remake lacks the macabre comedy of the original; it's all about...
