Charlton Heston seemed fond of starring in apocalyptic science-fiction films in the late 1960s and early '70s. There was Planet of the Apes, of course, and The Omega Man. But there was also 1973's Soylent Green, a strange detective film (based on Harry Harrison's Make Room! Make Room!) set in 2022 and starring Heston as a Manhattan cop trying to solve a murder in the overpopulated, overheated city. His roommate (a necessity in the overcrowded metropolis), played by Edward G. Robinson, tries telling him about a better time on Earth before there were no more resources or room left; but Heston doesn't care. Directed by Richard Fleischer (The Vikings), the film has a curious but largely successful mix of mystery and bleak futuristic vision, somewhat like Blade Runner but without the extraordinary art direction. This was Robinson's last film and he's easily the best thing about it; his final scene seems terribly appropriate in retrospect. Joseph Cotten makes an appearance as the man whose murder results in the revelation of a shocking secret. --Tom Keogh

    Review(s): DVD Soylent Green
THIS is a true future movie

"Soylent Green" is almost scary. It takes place in 2022, where there are 40 million people living in New York, women are furniture, and everyone is living off of little squares of soybean-lentil called Soylent Green. In this world, running water is a total luxery and strawberries are 150 bucks a jar. This is what our world might become. To me, it's a bit scary how close this is to what MIGHT happen (especially the year-long heat wave bit) But to be quite honest, it was merely OK.
"Soylent Green" features Charlton Heston, a cop investigating the murder of Soylent Greens director. I love "Planet of the Apes", so that means I like Charlton Heston OK. But I liked "Planet" WAY better. The difference is this movie moves a bit...slowly. I felt it moved a bit too slowly for my taste, suddenly sped up near the end, and just STOPPED. It was a bit wierd! It just kind of stopped at the end. The end...The END. The end was good, luckily, I LIKED the end. It's almost thought provoking. It might be a bit tame by todays standards, but it WAS made in, like, the 60's or 70's. This might be a bit of a spoiler to people, but imagine...Everyones living off of Soylent Green, Yellow, and Red...What is the supplies run out?
Along with the slowness, there are a few good memorable scenes. Like the "Old Guy" scene, that I will not talk about, for fear of spoiling ;) That was depressing. I think someone could cry seeing it. Oh well.
Overall, Soylent Green was a pretty good Sci-Fi, making you think, cry, get weirded out and maybe, take a peek into a possible future.

a telling picture of the future

This movie came out the same year that the Supreme Court gave us abortion on demand via Roe v. Wade. How ironic is that? We are living in these days to a certain degree already. This film is disturbing on many levels because of it's impending reality. I highly recommend it as a wake up call.

    Still holds up great

I saw this back when it was released in the 70's. I liked it thn and I like it now. It is a poignant story that still has merits today. New York looks awfully gritty too. Just like ti did in the 70's. Edward G Robinson's death scene is particularly moving. Being that this was his last movie it makes it even more so. Good cast too. The late Edward G Robinson. The late Chuck Connors. The late Brock Peters. The last Joseph Cotten (in a small part), and of course the 70's sci fi man himself. Charlton Heston.

    The Omega Man DVD

Science fiction took a grim turn in the 1970s--the heyday of Agent Orange, nuclear peril, and Watergate. Suddenly, most of our possible futures took on a "last man on Earth" flavor, with The Omega Man topping the doom-struck heap.

Charlton Heston plays the government researcher behind the ultimate biological weapon, a deadly plague that has ravaged humanity. There are two groups of survivors: a dwindling band of immune humans and an infected, psychopathic mob of light-hating quasi-vampires. The infected are led by Mathias, a clever, charismatic man set on destroying the last remnants of the civilization that produced the plague. Heston has a vaccine--but he and the few remaining normals are outnumbered and outgunned. By day, he builds a makeshift version of the nuclear family... More Info about this DVD

    Logan's Run DVD

If you can stifle the urge to laugh at its pastel unisex costumes and futuristic shopping-mall décor, this extravagant science fiction film from 1976 is still visually fascinating and provocatively entertaining. Set in the year 2274, when ecological disaster has driven civilization to the protection of domed cities, the story revolves around a society that holds a ceremonial death ritual for all citizens who reach the age of 30. In a diseaseless city where free sex is encouraged and old age is virtually unknown, Logan (Michael York) is a "sandman," one who enforces this radical method of population control (but he's about to turn 30 and he doesn't want to die). Escaping from the domed city via a network of underground passages, Logan is joined by another "runner" named Jessica... More Info about this DVD

    Westworld DVD

Welcome to Delos, the high-tech Disneyland for adults that Michael Crichton created for Westworld, a nifty science fiction thriller from 1973 that also marked the popular novelist's feature-film directorial debut. The movie is so named because the vacationing buddies who travel to Delos (James Brolin, Richard Benjamin) choose Westworld as their destination (the other choices being Roman World and Medieval World), where they are free to indulge their movie-inspired fantasies of the Wild West. From brothel beauties to black-hatted gunslingers (like the villain played by Yul Brynner), the place is populated by perfectly humanlike robots programmed and monitored to cater to every guest's fancy. But fun turns into abject horror when the robots--particularly Brynner's badman--begin to... More Info about this DVD

    Silent Running DVD

After creating many of the innovative special effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey, Douglas Trumbull tried his hand at directing, and 1971's Silent Running marked an impressive debut. (In addition to creating the visual effects for Close Encounters of the Third Kind and directing 1983's Brainstorm, Trumbull later turned to the creation of high-tech cinematic amusement park rides.) One of the best science fiction films of the 1970s, Silent Running stars Bruce Dern as Freeman Lowell, a nature-loving crewmember aboard the Valley Forge, a gigantic spaceship in a small fleet that carries the last surviving forests of the Earth, which has fallen victim to overpopulation and ecological neglect.

Freeman's name reflects his nonconformist philosophy,... More Info about this DVD

    The Andromeda Strain DVD

The best-selling novel by Michael Crichton was faithfully adapted for this taut 1971 thriller, about a team of scientists racing against time to destroy a deadly alien virus that threatens to wipe out life on Earth. As usual with any Crichton-based movie, the emphasis is on an exciting clash between nature and science, beginning when virologists discover the outer-space virus in a tiny town full of corpses. Projecting total contamination, the scientists isolate the deadly strain in a massive, high-tech underground lab facility, which is rigged for nuclear destruction if the virus is not successfully controlled. The movie spends a great deal of time covering the scientific procedures of the high-pressure investigation, and the rising tensions between scientists who have been forced to work...
