Review(s): DVD Memoirs of an Invisible Man
Great movie, sad that nobody saw it.

This is the movie that established Chevy Chase as a serious actor. It's a pity nobody was watching. Chevy Chase plays Nick Halloway, a solitary man made invisible by a freak accident. Chevy does an incredible job conveying the horror of being completely unnoticed, and puts a dark, and credible spin on a rather outlandish plot. Sam Neil is the CIA agent that wants him for his 'gifts'. Like always, Sam hits it dead on. Daryl Hannah covers the love intrest, and plays the part to satisfaction, although it's fairly obvious she didn't land the part becuase of her acting talents. Special effects were the best for the time, and aren't dated to the point were they distract from the story. The plot is strong, and ever-present, and the direction is excellent thanks to John Carpenter. I strongly suggest everyone give this one a chance. You won't be disappointed.

NOT QUITE A THRILLER OR A COMEDY

The Chevy Chase film, the barely seen MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN (Warner Home Video) was assumed by moviegoers to be a comedy in the tradition of Ghost Busters, is instead a rather serious film that Chase believed would establish him as a dramatic actor. Director John Carpenter's curious adaptation of the Invisible Man concept has cool effects and an unexpected story that is closer to a thriller than a comedy.

    Decent all the way

This comedy directed by horror maestro John Carpenter is actually pretty decent. The special effects still look amazing.
The plot is thin, but who cares? It's well acted (it would be better if you're a fan of Chevy Chase) and hilarious in some places. Slows a bit down in the second half but picks up for a good finale.

    Fletch Lives DVD

Before his movie career completely tanked, Chevy Chase made one of the few films that gave him a chance to display his comic versatility: 1985's Fletch, the Michael Ritchie-directed comedy about an investigative reporter who specializes in going undercover on big stories. Lightning, however, didn't strike twice when Ritchie and Chase went back to Gregory MacDonald's novels for a second helping. This sequel features Chase once again as Fletch, super-reporter, who heads from L.A. to the South, where he supposedly has inherited an estate. Before long, he's become involved in a murder plot and is trying to stay out of the killer's sights himself. The material is considerably weaker, revealing Chase's shortcomings as an ad lib comic. --Marshall Fine More Info about this DVD

    They Live DVD

An economic crisis brings unemployed Nada (Roddy Piper) to L.A. in search of work. What he finds instead is that the ruling elite of the world are aliens in disguise, their aim being to keep humans in a state of mindless consumerism. His discovery comes when he dons a pair of special sunglasses made by a resistance group and sees for the first time reality unadorned. Billboards, store signs, magazine covers--all bear subliminal messages to OBEY, to CONSUME, to have NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT. Money itself says THIS IS YOUR GOD. But worst of all, with these glasses you see which of us are really hideous, bug-eyed aliens. The conceptual breakthrough is hilarious while keeping its roots in darker matters. Although some fault the film for settling into its action plot, the ending has a... More Info about this DVD

    Cocoon DVD

An offbeat and charming comedy with elements of science fiction thrown in, director Ron Howard's (Ransom, Apollo 13) unlikely fantasy ponders the price of immortality and the power of everlasting love. A group of aliens travel to a Florida retirement community to rescue some long-stranded colleagues cocooned and buried beneath the sea. But as the aliens take on human form and stash their counterparts in a swimming pool, a group of elderly retirees discover the pool and after swimming in the water find themselves rejuvenated, with boundless energy and insatiable appetites. Soon the retirees are forced to choose between living out their lives on earth with their families, or leaving with the aliens and attaining immortality. More character driven than dependent on the... More Info about this DVD

Escape from New York (Special Edition) DVD

In the future, crime is out of control and New York City is a maximum security prison. Grabbing a bargaining chip right out of the air, convicts bring down the President's plane in bad old Gotham. Gruff Snake Plissken, a one-eyed warrior new to prison life, is coerced into bringing the President, and his cargo, out of this land of undesirables. Kurt Russell put his Disney days behind him as the nicest bad guy in the picture. All comic-book sensibilities and macho posturing, this is one of writer-director John Carpenter's better brainless escapes. There are snappy one-liners and explosive action scenes. However, the film lacks tension and some believability even within the realm of SF fantasy. Even when it fails to gel, though, it always manages to amuse, thanks in great part to a varied...
