  • DVD National Lampoon's Vacation (20th Anniversary Special Edition)

Vacation paved the way for the John Hughes movie dynasty of the 1980s. Written by Hughes (who would go on to write, direct, and/or produce The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck, Home Alone, and so on) and directed by Harold Ramis (Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, Stuart Saves His Family), the first Vacation movie introduces us to the all-American Griswold family: father Clark (Chevy Chase), mother Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), son Rusty (future Hughes staple Anthony Michael Hall), and daughter Audrey (Dana Barron). They all pile into the car for a cross-country road trip to Walley World, stopping along the way to view the world's biggest ball of twine. John Candy, Imogene Coca, and Randy Quaid (as yokel Cousin Eddie) pop up along the way. The movie was a big hit, and was followed by several sequels--National Lampoon's European Vacation, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation--but this one is still probably the freshest and funniest of the bunch. --Jim Emerson

Review(s): DVD National Lampoon's Vacation (20th Anniversary Special Edition)
    AN ALL-TIME COMEDY CLASSIC

There are many comedies that I have seen through the years that become dated, and I don't find as funny as I once did when I watch them years later. This one is the exception. This is a very, very funny film. The Griswold family odyssey of trying to reach the theme park Wallyworld is timeless. It's as funny now as when I first watched it well over 20 years ago. This alone makes it a classic.

Everything about the film is funny. And cousin Eddie (Randy Quiad) is still as funny today as when his character first appeared. When I first saw the film years ago in the theatre, I never saw a film bring as much laughter from an audience as this one did. People sitting next to me were in stitches. And I'm talking about people of all ages. The elderly gentleman sitting next to me had to leave his seat because his sides were hurting, and all the while he was leaving he was howling in laughter. What great memories this film brings. Highest recommendation. [Stars: 5+]

He owes us! You're GD right he owes us!!!

Review Note: This review is based on the VHS tape.

Classic comedy, Chevy Chase style. This was and is to this day, a comedy classic. One of the funniest! My brother and I, and numerous friends still quote off lines from this movie, on a regular basis.

    Highly recommended!

    Nothing Special about Special Edition

(This is a review of the DVD itself, not the movie.)

Not sure why they decided to release a "special edition." Really the only thing extra is the commentary, which is too busy because they have at least 4 or 5 people making comments. Not nearly as good as Chevy Chase by himself on the "European Vacation" DVD. Also, the video is a bit jumpy and seems low-quality, as if it were transferred from VHS. Sound is excellent however.

Worth it just for the movie itself, but really there's not too much extra.

    National Lampoon's European Vacation DVD

After winning a tour package in a game show, the bickering Griswald family carve a trail of destruction through England (where they knock over Stonehenge), France, Germany, and Italy. Somehow Ellen (Bevery D'Angelo), the mom, gets kidnapped by gangsters, leading to a car chase that reunites the family, despite their differences. It's hard to believe that National Lampoon's European Vacation is only the second of the Vacation movies; it has the exhausted pallor of the last of a long series of sequels, drained of all zest or original ideas. The charmless smirk of Chevy Chase, mechanical in its idiocy, hangs over European Vacation like a death mask. It's hard to believe that this hack was once the funny and sexy hero of Foul Play. D'Angelo keeps her chin up and... More Info about this DVD

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Special Edition) DVD

You know exactly what you're getting in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: another goofball, slapstick comedy of chaos and catastrophe with Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and family. This time, there's no traveling involved: Clark and Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) prepare for a nice Christmas with the kids (played by none other than Juliette Lewis and Roseanne star Johnny Galecki), when their home is invaded by backwoods cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) and his brood, along with assorted other crazy and/or stuffy relatives. Complications, of course, are inevitable. The film is preceded by National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) and National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) and followed by National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation (1997). Directed by Jeremiah Chechik, who... More Info about this DVD

    Vegas Vacation (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Check your brain at the door, because it's time once again for a dim-witted visit to Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his happy-go-lucky family, who hit the Vegas strip for this vacation. (The kids who originally played the Griswold children have been replaced.) The Griswold exploits in the casinos are good for a few embarrassed chuckles, especially when Mrs. Griswold (Beverly D'Angelo) gets onstage with Wayne Newton for a truly mind-altering rendition of Minnie Ripperton's ear-piercing 1970s hit "Loving You." And because he scored so many low-brow points as the lame-brained cousin in the original National Lampoon's Vacation, Randy Quaid is back to cause a lot of trouble, while Chevy Chase is reduced to uninspired slapstick and endless puns involving the word damn. In other... More Info about this DVD

Ever caught yourself wondering what exactly "Noonan" means? To avoid further embarrassment, every golfer--hack or scratch--must tee it up at Bushwood Country Club for the golf classic Caddyshack. Funny Farm DVD

George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) directed this 1988 comedy that gives star Chevy Chase one of his better-quality vehicles. Chase plays a New York sportswriter who turns to the country for a simpler, happier way of living. He discovers, of course, that things don't work out that way. Hill's usual touch with comic timing, tone, and dialogue give Chase a rare career opportunity to be part of something a little classier than most of his other movies; but Funny Farm nevertheless has its share of so-what gags. Still, the film's overall tone is winning and laid-back, and it makes for nice escapist fare. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD
