  • DVD Bright Lights, Big City

Michael J. Fox plays the most sympathetic cocaine addict you've ever seen in the movie of Jay McInerney's popular novel Bright Lights, Big City, the book that famously chronicled the coke- and cash-fueled era of the 1980s. Jamie Conway (Fox) works as a fact-checker for a major New York magazine, but because he spends his nights partying with his glib best friend (Kiefer Sutherland), he's on the verge of getting fired. His wife, a fast-rising model (Phoebe Cates), just left him; he's still reeling from the death of his mother (Dianne Wiest) a year earlier; and he's obsessed with a tabloid story about a pregnant woman in a coma. Bright Lights, Big City doesn't have much of a plot, but in its meandering way it captures some of the glossy chaos of the time and of a man desperately trying to escape the pain in his life. --Bret Fetzer

Review(s): DVD Bright Lights, Big City
The best film of Michael J. Fox's career!!

To me, "Bright Lights, Big City" is a brilliant, well-made film because it talks about Michael's character being dumped by his wife (Phoebe Cates) and how he falls in love with the seductive nightlife that the Big Apple has to offer and going on an alcohol/cocaine binge. It tells the story of one man's journey to discover himself and confront his inner demons before they literally destroy him forever. I don't know if anybody knows this, but "Bright Lights, Big City" is also where Michael J. Fox met his future wife, Tracy Pollan, who also stars in the film. I was at a store one day, and I saw "Bright Lights..." on sale, and it was just too sweet of an opportunity to pass up, so I bought it, and every time I look at the movie, it keeps getting better and better. The soundtrack was exceptional, and kudos to Donald Fagen for the song at the end of the film, "Century's End", also when he sang "Bright Lights, Big City" too. But anyway, all I have to say is that "Bright Lights, Big City" has an excellent supporting cast, including Kiefer Sutherland and Dianne Wiest. Michael J. Fox has never been better in "Bright Lights, Big City"!!

Leave the past behind / Great drama film

This is one of my favorite 80's films set in NYC night culture. Based on Jay McInery's classic novel. This movie I call the Less Than Zero of the east coast. Break out character for Michael J Fox. The story MJ Fox plays Jamie Conway a cocaine addicted journalist for a NY magazine who can't let go of the past. His character really struggles with letting go and adversity. Phoebe Cates plays his model wife who leaves him. He just recently lost his mother. The flashbacks really show how the past haunts him. He is struggling with cocaine addiction going out partying at NYC nightclubs. His life is spinning out of control. You can't help but feel sorry for his character. A film about one man's high expectations on himself without letting go of the past. Great soundtrack and NYC setting. Essential to collection, a great 80's NYC culture film.

    Bright Lights Big City

Fox plays an impressionable Kansan who comes to the Big Apple to take a job at a major magazine. It isn't long before he falls into the twin traps of drug and alcohol abuse. His only hope for redemption is in the hands of Vicky (Tracy Pollan), the cousin of his scuzzy drinking buddy Tad (Kiefer Sutherland). Jay McInerney's bestselling novel does not translate easily to the big screen, but Fox strives hard to please, as do all of his costars. The white stuff snorted by Fox wasn't really cocaine, but powdered milk.

    Less Than Zero DVD

Dreary, pointless late-'80s novel by literary poseur Bret Easton Ellis focused on listless, shiftless, drug-sniffing, sex-swapping, dead-end California teens with too much money and time on their hands. Which just about sums up this movie, though it's not nearly as interesting as that. This is mostly due to the ridiculously cleaned-up script and lifeless direction, which whitewashes the baser depravity and replaces it with perversion-lite and fashion shows. It doesn't help that director Marek Kanievska is saddled with Brat Pack lesser (make that least) lights Andrew McCarthy and Jami Gertz. The only things that lift this film above the muck are the performances by James Spader as a particularly heinous drug dealer and Robert Downey Jr. as a rich-kid addict with no self-control.... For Love Or Money DVD

With only a few exceptions (the Back to the Future series and a couple of others), Michael J. Fox has been unable to translate his TV success into movie stardom. It may just be a poor choice of material, such as with this limp Barry Sonnenfeld comedy about a New York hotel concierge trying to save up for his own hotel. What's he saving? The massive tips he gets from hotel guests for whom he does all manner of favors. But his conscience is tested when he falls for the mistress of one of his wealthiest clients and finds he must choose between his integrity and his dream. Fox is appealing, and so is Gabrielle Anwar, as the woman who changes him. But neither can rescue this slow-witted gloss on The Apartment. And what is Sonnenfeld, the stylish director of Men in Black... More Info about this DVD

The Secret of My Success DVD

Derivative fluff from 1987, made tolerable by its bawdy exuberance and an appealing performance by Michael J. Fox, who was still enjoying TV stardom and the career momentum he earned by traveling Back to the Future. Here he plays a Kansas farm boy who dreams of scoring big in New York City, but reality turns out to be brutal to his ambition. When his uncle (Richard Jordan) gives him a mail-room job in the high-rise headquarters of a major corporation, Fox occupies an empty office and poses as a young executive, winning the attention of a lovely young colleague (Helen Slater) and having an affair with his boss's wife (Margaret Whitton). Sporadically amusing as a yuppie comedy and rather off-putting as a wannabe sex farce, the movie's still recommendable for its lively cast and a... More Info about this DVD

    The Last American Virgin DVD

A "let's get laid" favorite from the teen-comedy trend of the early 1980s, The Last American Virgin is beloved enough to earn its own fan-driven website, and it's still lots of fun. While tapping into the same zeitgeist that popularized Fast Times at Ridgemont High (which was released just one week earlier), this above-average sex comedy mixes high-school high jinks with the real anguish of unrequited love, as a nice kid named Gary (Lawrence Monoson) falls for Karen (Diane Franklin), a cute classmate who won't return his affections. Gary delivers pizza, leading to the comic highlight when his horny pals (Steve Antin, Joe Rubbo) deliver more than pizza to a lonely Latina bombshell (Louisa Moritz). But Gary wants his "first time" to be special, and director Boaz Davidson... More Info about this DVD

    Promised Land DVD

I got a copy of the film 'Promised Land' from a friend. It is set in a small midwestern town where high school basketball is king. Sounds rather like Indiana, doesn't it? This gave the initial appeal to me, as films like this can help me understand the people in the area better -- at least, this is my hope, since I am not an Indiana native.

The actors are all very young. The film stars a very young Keifer Sutherland (Danny) and Meg Ryan (Bev) as a rather unlikely couple. The real 'star' of the film, the one who gets top billing, is Jason Gedrick (Hancock), whose career has been rather less prominent than Sutherland's or Ryan's. Tracy Jo Pollan (Mary) also stars in one of her few starring film roles. Pollan is now much better known through her marriage to Michael J. Fox.

The plot is... More Info about this DVD
