I had almost forgotten about this movie. I watched It a few years back, and I must say I havent seen anything like it since. Its more weird than scary, though it does have its moments. Its about a woman who reads an old novel, about a dentist who disfigures his face out of love for a woman. The dentist then starts killing off the friends of the woman, collecting parts of their faces. As the Woman reading the book, reads each chapter, the murders begin happening to her friends. The ending is one of the most creative, I have seen in a movie. This film just goes to prove, you dont need a big budget, or big stars to make a good movie.
Faceless Fear
I can't believe this gem of a thriller isn't better known.
Reclusive secondhand bookstore shopper Jenny Wright finds an obscure paperback original horror thriller, and loves it so much she hunts down the unknown author's only other title, "I, Madman." Its story is about a psychotic surgeon scorned by the object of his affections, who, in order to please her with the perfect visage, novocains himself, cuts off his own face, and murders other people to steal their features and sew them onto himself. But no sooner does Wright begin reading the story, than a bizarre, masked stalker begins following her around, enacting the story in real-life, killing her friends to steal their features and get closer to her. The author of "I, Madman," it seems, wasn't writing a thriller - he wrote his autobiography.
This one's a beautifully produced low-budget winner, benefiting from solid performances, a good script, gripping suspense and just the right amount of graphic gore. It even has a nice opening and closing surreal special effects sequence, used probably to help diminish the intensity of the film so viewers will be reminded that it's just a story, after all, and not have as many nightmares after watching as they might otherwise.
Definitely not for the faint of heart or squeamish of stomach, but lovers of thrillers and horror flicks will be more than satisfied.
EYES! Face? Razor?????
IT's kind of a 'do it yourself' version of "Eyes Without a Face" - not really - closer to the lovely Vinnie the P's "House Of Wax" ...... very nasty work afoot and this one keep you well on your toes , err whatever.
Nerdy [but buxom] blonde is a reader of pulp - she becomes slightly entwined in two rather sick fictional excursions by a now departed soul only to find out that the works are actually classified as NON-Fiction .... not helping is the detective hunk boyfriend, who 'believes' her somewhat.
Seems that she is now being pursued by the mysterious black trench coated figure - lower face masked and this one carries sharp objects .....
GREAT FUN in the seedy side of Hollywood's old apartments, and those nasty little sticky Yale locks ....
ART DIRECTION? Superb! Mixes of green, mint, pastachio, vermillion, crimson and just old plain red - almost like watching 3D without the glasses. [A brief nod to 'Rear Window' - works well!]
A MUST for the collector!
Bravo to the cast for maintaining the mood and period of this special pleasure [!]
I first saw this film at least 10 years ago....it stuck in my mind so much that I started to search, endlessly, the TV listings until it came on again. I HAD to record it!!! It is NOT the run of the mill horror flick like "Halloween", "Friday the 13th", or "Nightmare on Elm Street". "Pin" keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering where each vital scene is going to lead you next! It has a "Hitchcock" subtleness about it. If you are a horror fan of the "TRUE" sense, and not out for "blood and guts" this is YOUR kind of movie! This type of horror film has not occured since "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane", "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte", or "Straight Jacket". The acting is believable and the direction was done with superb technique...a must see!! You may never have heard of this neglected 1974 gem, but you've probably seen one of its many imitators. Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder (also look for Andrea Martin of SCTV fame) star as two residents of a sorority house that is emptying out as Christmas approaches. The atmosphere is jolly and carefree, except for an ongoing series of menacing telephone calls, and, oh yes, we've just seen someone climb into the attic with apparent ill intent. Kidder does some scene-stealing as the bad girl, Hussey illustrates one of the downsides to having beautiful long '70s hair, and Keir Dullea does a nice turn as the creepy boyfriend. Director Robert Clark knows that the unseen is far scarier than what can be seen and he ratchets up the tension beautifully, making good use of ominous shadows,... It's movies like May that give me hope about the future of Horror. This movie seemed to pop out of nowhere fully formed and should be treasured by any fans of clever and original left-field film. There are echoes of other great Independent genre pictures here- a little bit of Nadja, a touch of Liquid Sky, a dose or two of flavor from Re-Animator- but May stands up totally on its own.
The story concerns a creepy young woman who was burdened with a lazy eye and a psychotic mother and grew up to be criminally insane and yet remain utterly innocent. Angela Bettis' performance is a marvel- a plethora of wildly clashing impulses are contained and rendered with a strangely sexy hyperkinetic energy. Misunderstood and abused by male and female lovers, May sets out to construct her... A very underrated little nasty. The Ugly's title says it all. But instead of going the all out gore route in plot. the ugly concentrates more on the cause of a serial killer than the effects. However, this low budget New Zeland shot little film has it all, great acting(Hobbs and Ward are very good, but Rotondo steals the show), stylish lighting, brutal murders(the black blood provided by the same make up man who did Dead-Alive), and a very engrossing story with love, hate, anger, sorrow, beauty(even the murders have a slight beauty about them, I know I'm a sick puppy), and even a little bit of romance and humor. The killer in the movie is frightened, fragle, emotional, sympathetic, and in the space of a minute cold, calculating, evil, and sinister. The ending is the only drawback....END More Info about this DVD Director(s): Scott Reynolds DVD Release Date: Released the 12 September 2000 Usually ships within 24 hours

Released a year after John Carpenter's 1978 Halloween, this thriller by longtime actor-turned-director Fred Walton has held a strong following of its own. In an exemplary piece of suspense, the film begins with a babysitter (Carol Kane) fielding threatening phone calls while on the job. She soon finds that a pair of children in her charge have been murdered in their beds; she is nearly killed herself by the homicidal maniac before police arrive. As with Halloween, the action jumps some years ahead, when Kane's character is herself a wife and mother--and the monster escapes from a mental institution to re-create his original carnage in the heroine's own home. Between these exciting bookends, the film loses its way and becomes dissatisfying and obscure. But Walton compensates...
