  • DVD The Sound of Music (Double Digipack)

Some people may sneer at this 1965 musical, but the truth is the film has earned its status as a perennially watchable romantic-drama, largely on the strength of a fun story and chemistry between stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Veteran filmmaker Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still) mostly stays out of the way of the film's appealing elements, which include a based-on-fact tale of Austria's von Trapp family, who fled their Nazi-occupied country in 1938. Andrews is delightful and even fascinating as Maria, who sheds her tomboyish ways as a novice nun to accept the mantle of adulthood, becoming matron of the motherless von Trapp clan. Plummer is matinee-idol handsome and gives a smart performance to boot, and the cast of young people and kids who make up the singing von Trapp children make a strong impression. Based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, the score includes such winners as "Maria" and the future John Coltrane hit "My Favorite Things." --Tom Keogh

Review(s): DVD The Sound of Music (Double Digipack)
Very entertaining, no connection to reality

Robert Wise's "Sound of Music" was one of the biggest successes among the movies that are musicals. It has a decent cast and an appealing story that is black and white. Julie Andrews plays the part of a nun who becomes the governess for the children of a captain in Salzburg. The movie was filmed in Salzburg and has beautiful photography. The screenplay was by Ernest Lehmann and traces their escape from the Nazis. The movie has a lot of beautiful songs. However, the movie is not appealing for people over a certain age. There is some decent acting by people who play the part of Max Dettweiler and the Eleanor Parker, who plays the Baroness. The part with the children can be cheesy too.

There is not enough realism in the movie. The story makes Austria as the wounded country by the Nazis. In reality, they welcomed them and except for a small number of people, were easily absorbed into the Third Reich. In fact, Austria conveniently used this movie and its theme for years to act the guilty party. However, Austria's role in the Holocaust has been coming out of late with different confessions and it has not been easy. Even now, there is a lot of anti-semitism in Austria, perhaps more than most countries in Europe. They also make the escape from Austria to be too easy. In reality, it was extremely difficult. One has to look into the story of Paul Grueninger, who was the police chief of Saint Gallen canton in Switzerland. It was very hard for people to get an exit visa from Austria via Switzerland.

Despite all this, people who love music can listen to the sound track for several reasons. It is the last one by Oscar Hammerstein and is beautifully written. It is one of the few movies that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, though I know people who are tired of it. It came out the same year as a number of great movies and yet had great success in the box office. However, it cannot be called a great movie, as it does not have imagination and the special touch that puts it above other movies. It can be enjoyed for the sound track though.

A Masterpiece- A Review By Mary Sanders

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I myself find it hard to believe I love this movie so much because I usually like movies the TOTAL opposite. well, anyway I was eleven when I first saw this movie, and I loved it. I'm fifteen now, and bought the DVD.
Anyway, this movie is beautifully made, and despite being almost three hours long, it's so charming and sweet it seems only to be three minutes long! I shall not tell the main story of this movie for I don't want to spoil it. The music is sensational, and the DVD comes with really cool extras. Young children would definetly appreciat this movie, teenagers- probably not, adults yes- the elderly- what a dumb question. Of COURSE! Buy this movie! It's priceless!

    classic musical

This movie is okay, but don't ask any teens to watch it. I have to admit, it is a rather charming musical. Older people (I say that with the highest amount of respect)will probably enjoy along with young kids and Julie Andrews fans.

Mary Poppins (40th Anniversary Edition) DVD

There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim-Chim Cheree") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider Mary Poppins to be the... More Info about this DVD

    My Fair Lady DVD

Hollywood's legendary "woman's director," George Cukor (The Women, The Philadelphia Story), transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady stars Rex Harrison as linguist Henry Higgins (Harrison also played the role, opposite Julie Andrews, on stage), who draws Eliza into a social experiment that works almost too well. The letterbox edition of this film on video certainly pays tribute to the pageantry of Cukor's set, but it also underscores a certain visual stiffness that can slow viewer enthusiasm just a tad. But it's really star wattage that keeps this film exciting, that and such great songs as "On the Street... More Info about this DVD

    The Wizard of Oz DVD

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the Yellow Brick Road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who... More Info about this DVD

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Full Screen Edition) DVD

This remastered, pan-and-scan 30th-anniversary edition of that kiddie-car caper is flawed but solid family fare. It retains a quaint charm while some of the songs--including the title tune--are quite hummable. A huge plus is Dick Van Dyke, who is extremely appealing as an eccentric inventor around the turn of the century. With nimble fingers and a unique way of looking at the world, he invents for his children a magic car that floats and flies. Or does he? The special effects are tame by today's standards, and the film is about 20 minutes too long--but its enthusiasm charms. The script was cowritten by Roald Dahl and based on the novel by Ian Fleming, best known for his James Bond adventures. --Rochelle O'Gorman More Info about this DVD

    The King and I DVD

The third Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway hit to go before the cameras, The King and I boasts a career-making performance from Yul Brynner, repeating his stage triumph as the titular monarch and proving to moviegoers that bald can be beautiful. It's Brynner's proud king that provides the fulcrum to the plot, and it's Brynner himself, with his piercing gaze and graceful physicality, that demands our attention.

The story line, adapted from an earlier, nonmusical stage hit, follows widowed English teacher Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr) to her new posting as tutor to the Siamese king's formidable mob of children. The collision of East and West affords its winning mixture of drama and humor, and the warm friendship that grows between the king and the patrician teacher provides a... More Info about this DVD
