    Crisscross DVD

Comic actress Goldie Hawn takes a serious turn in the affecting coming-of-age story CrissCross. Hawn (Shampoo, The First Wives Club) plays Tracy Cross, a single mother in Key West, Florida, who turns to stripping to support her son Chris (newcomer David Arnott). Meanwhile, Chris struggles to find himself, faced with a father (Keith Carradine, Choose Me, Nashville) who abandoned him, his mother's new boyfriend (Arliss Howard, Full Metal Jacket), and the temptation of selling drugs. The plot elements may sound melodramatic, but CrissCross keeps everything real with detailed performances, attention to the mundane (but telling) aspects of daily life, and a view of human nature that goes beyond the good-guy/bad-guy simplicity of most ... Local Boys DVD

The story is predictable, the writing sophomoric. Yet I still managed to enjoy it, and I appreciated the performances given by Mark Harmon and especially Jeremy Sumpter as "Skeet". Jeremy is an amazing young actor (check him out in "Frailty" if you haven't already) who brings a natural charm to his character -- he never seems forced or phony. Might even bring a tear to your eye in a couple scenes . ;) Mark Harmon is quite the pro at this kind of thing and a pleasure to watch. Same for most of the rest of the cast. As I said, this is not a masterpiece, but it's an OK little surf-oriented movie with nice cinematography and music, and a decent enough story to hold my interest. More Info about this DVD

    3 Ninjas DVD

A slightly better movie than you might think, this variation on The Karate Kid finds three youngsters helping out their grandfather in his fight against evil ninja warriors. The real secret weapon here is director Jon Turtletaub, paying some dues on this 1992 family feature; he's since gone on to direct John Travolta in Phenomenon and Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD
