  • DVD Laurel & Hardy (Sons of the Desert/The Music Box/Another Fine Mess/Busy Bodies/County Hospital)

For one-stop convenience, you can't beat this handy compilation of Laurel & Hardy classics. Although it's modestly priced and packaged, this DVD packs plenty of extras along with Stan & Ollie's finest feature and several of the comedy duo's best-loved "talkie" shorts. Sons of the Desert (1933) is the crown jewel in any L&H collection, and with Charley Chase as their stellar comedy costar, the boys reached the pinnacle of their unique partnership, playing a pair of Fez-wearing "Sons of the Desert" sneaking off to a convention in Chicago, but their wives discover the ruse with hilarious results. For L&H fans, it simply doesn't get any better than this, although 1932's "The Music Box" shares equal status--and a 1932 Oscar® for Best Comedy Short--in the L&H pantheon. The remaining shorts on the disc ("Another Fine Mess," "Busy Bodies," and "County Hospital") were produced during the prime of Stan & Ollie's sound-era success (1930-33), each boasting their own timeless bits and flawless routines. Abundant laughs are virtually guaranteed.

Most of the bonus material pays tribute to legendary comedy producer Hal Roach, who first partnered Stan & Ollie in 1926. A film-clip tribute includes interviews with comedy greats like Mel Brooks and Steve Allen, and on-screen articles explore Roach's career in greater detail. A "then and now" photo tour provides an historic tour of Roach Studio locations in Culver City, California, and text biographies are provided for Roach, Laurel, and Hardy. In addition to the films themselves (which never looked or sounded better), these extras make this Laurel & Hardy DVD a perfect choice for old and new fans alike. --Jeff Shannon

Laurel & Hardy's Sons of the Desert Plus-- DVD

Saw this movie in the 70's and found it so funny and entertaining. It's about 90 minutes long. Sons of the Desert is the BEST Laurel & Hardy movie they ever made. When it came out on DVD, it had to be viewed and after 30 years it is STILL funny and entertaining. It's about how Laurel & Hardy, playing married next door neighbors and Lodge brothers can go to a Lodge convention even though their wives said no. It's the typical meek husband and overbearing bossy controlling wife situation taking place in the 1930's--- very funny and very entertaining the whole way through. The fact that 4 other short movies are on this DVD is a plus!

Where would we have been without them?

How many people have actually sat down and thought what the world would have missed if Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy hadn't paired up? I have been watching them for nearly 50 years now and this DVD with what I think are 5 of their best films is a real bargain at twice the price! It would be hard to leave any of these out of my top 10 films for them and The Music Box is a masterpiece of timeing. County Hospital where Stan has the novel idea of taking Ollie nuts to eat is brilliant and as usual Ollie ends up worse off than when he went into the hospital in the first place! A real must for any true fan.

you must read this review! it is a must!

Laurel & Hardy II Collection (Way Out West/Block-Heads/Chickens Come Home) DVD

The combination of choleric, combustible Oliver Hardy and mild, perpetually helpful Stan Laurel sustained dozens upon dozens of comedies, including the popular Way Out West. What makes this hour-long feature stand out is not just the physical hijinks (of which there are plenty), but the moments of surprising elegance, like a supple soft-shoe duet accompanied by what can only be called cowboy doo-wop. The plot concerns keeping the deed to a gold mine out of the hands of a greedy saloonkeeper (frequent comic foil James Finlayson), but it's just a pretext for gleeful slapstick orchestrations. Laurel & Hardy II also includes the underrated Block-Heads, another hour-long feature which starts out in the trenches of World War I and ends in a 13th floor apartment in New York;... W.C. Fields Comedy Collection (The Bank Dick / My Little Chickadee / You Can't Cheat an Honest Man / It's a Gift / International House) DVD

For anyone who loves classic comedy, the W.C. Fields Comedy Collection is absolutely essential. Film for film, this may be the best DVD showcase ever devoted to a single comedian, including all five of Fields's acknowledged classics in a sturdy, beautifully designed library-quality slipcase. One could easily lament the relative lack of bonus features (it would have been nice to have some vintage Fields radio shows and newsreel footage), but the inclusion of A&E's 1994 Biography documentary W.C. Fields: Behind the Laughter is sufficiently informative about Fields's life, career, irascible personality, and tragic alcoholism. That's all that's really needed when the films themselves are so timelessly entertaining, and they're all remarkably pristine in sound and image... More Info about this DVD

The Lost Films of Laurel & Hardy - The Complete Collection, Vol. 5 DVD

I love this series of DVD's. But I wish that there was more of the talkies available on these. Perhaps they do not fit into the "Lost" category.

Can someone please tell me what that gray square on the bottom right of the screen during some of the movies is? Habeas Corpus has it. More Info about this DVD
