One Step Beyond - Collection 1 DVD

Okay, so some of the prints aren't the best in world, but so what? It's "One Step Beyond" and we are finally getting to see more than a scattered episode here and there on DVD.
VCI Entertainment did an excellent job of putting this DVD package together and I love the spooky DVD "landscape" created by VCI between the episodes. It's not just your average cheapie compliation of "here's the episodes with no money spent to set the mood."
"Ordeal on Locust Street" is worth the price of admission alone, and John Newlands deadpan intos and outros run a close second to Rod Serling's.
Sure, "One Step Beyond" has always been considered to be the poor man's "Twilight Zone," but that's part of it's charm. It's like a night of cheap thrills at a 1950's drive-in.
I just hope VCI... More Info about this DVD

    Hands of a Stranger DVD

Vernon Paris (James Stapleton) is an up and coming concert pianist. One night, his cab driver takes his eyes off the road to show Vernon some pictures of his own piano-playing son. This results in a terrible crash, leaving Vernon's hands mangled beyond repair. Across town, someone is gunned down in the street. He is D.O.A., but his hands come in... um, handy as replacements for Vernon's destroyed appendages. Vernon's doctor (Paul Lukather) stitches the hands on and hopes for the best. Well, Vernon doesn't like the idea and sets out on a killing spree. He starts with his "girlfriend" who never visited him in the hospital, and who is about to have a new guy over for dinner. Vernon knocks her over a table, sending candles rolling into curtains that must have been the world's greatest fire... More Info about this DVD

Reel Values TV Classics, Vol. 9 (Flash Gordon / One Step Beyond) DVD

This disc is a nice look into the state of Sci-Fi television in the 50's. It contains six episodes-three each of FLASH GORDON and ONE STEP BEYOND.
FLASH GORDON turns out to be fairly typical of 50's Sci-Fi, reused special effects (including the use of the same zoom into a planet mock-up to describe several different planets). There are some nice rocketship designs, though the one for Flash's ship is reused once or twice. Steve Holland plays an appropriate Gordon, down to the voice and physique. Very campy, and very fun for it! ONE STEP BEYOND is a nicely done predecessor to OUTER LIMITS and TWILIGHT ZONE. The stories on this DVD deal mainly with psychic phenomena, and are engaging.
The episodes included aren't listed by name on the box, but the main gist of them follows:

    One Step Beyond DVD

As a lover of John Newland's work, I was very eager for the release of this DVD. What a shock I received when I popped it in the player. The sound is terrible, the prints used are worse. And -- biggest sin -- each episode is in the same butchered, 22-minute state we get on commercial TV! Do not waste your money on this disk! More Info about this DVD
