    Review(s): DVD Three O'Clock High
A Must Have for Any '80s Kids Despite the Bareness of It

When details first arose about its DVD release the speculation was it might be a bare bones release and that is exactly what it is, but despite this 'downer' the movie looks much better in this widescreen version than the formatted to fit your screen TV broadcast and video release we've been accostumed to seeing through the years.

The widescreen factor of this release almost entirely makes up for the sole 2 channel stereo audio track, the lack of secondary language and directors commentary tracks. With the Widescreen you see the real richness of the camera work done on this movie, from the beautiful panoramic view of surburban Ogden, to the rowdy pep rally scene done with a crane camera to the bald guy in the flannel shirt who turns back to watch the camera during the big fight.

One thing certain is that they did a great job producing a very clean picture quality transfer. The first scene starts out grainy but after that everything looks very crisp and clean.

You may be discourage from buying the DVD because of the bareness of it, but in the end the new added dimension in the picture department and the sentimental value will win you over.

    Superb!

One of the best teenage coming of age movies I have ever seen. Great script, great cast and wonderful performances from all involved. Everything came together in this one. A classic. Richard Tyson and Casey Siemaszko are absolutely wonderful.

If you've ever thought that you had a rough day in high school you should see this movie. No one should ever have to go through what Jerry Mitchell goes through this day, but he still gives a great book review in his lit class. You have to see it to understand.

Aside from being a very good coming of age film, this is also a very good comedy.

'Three O'Clock High' (Universal Studios) Running time:97 min.

Good little comedy/drama that's pretty much aimed toward males between the ages of 13 to 28.Things get crazy when super straight-laced high school newspaper writer Jerry Mitchell(Casey Siemasako, heck he makes Ward Cleaver look wild))tries to arrange to do a special story on the JUST transfered infamous legend-in-his-own-mind muscle bound bully student Buddy Revell(Richard Tyson).Important factor that Mitchell was totally unaware of is that Revell simply 'doesn't like to be touched'.It appears that NOTHING can stop the fight the two are supposed to have promptly at 3pm after that day of school lets out.I haven't seen many movies where the entire plot takes place within a six hour time span. Most memorable segment of this flick is the last twenty minutes. The two duke it out and if you haven't seen this movie before,I certainly won't ruin it for you here.Very climactic ending is all I'll say.You might want to rent it before maybe buying a copy.

    My Bodyguard DVD

The son (Chris Makepeace) of a hotel manager (Martin Mull) finds himself the target of the school bully (Matt Dillon, in his breakthrough movie role). So he makes an offer to a school outcast--the biggest kid in class (Adam Baldwin), who reputedly has actually killed someone. He'll pay him to be his bodyguard against the bully. But the business arrangement turns into friendship, even as the smaller boy learns his new friend's secret shame. The first film by director-producer Tony Bill, this one comes down a little too heavily on the feel-good notes (and includes a gratingly precious appearance by Ruth Gordon in her lovable eccentric mode) but works because of strong performances by its young cast. --Marshall Fine More Info about this DVD

    Better Off Dead DVD

Lane Myer (John Cusack) is stuck in a personal hell. A compulsive, adolescent Everyman growing up in Suburbia, USA, not only does he fail to make the prestigious high school ski team (again), but his beloved sweetheart, Beth, also leaves him for Roy, the team's popular, arrogant captain. If this isn't bad enough, he's stuck with a mother who frighteningly experiments--rather than cooks--with food, a brother who builds rockets out of models, and a best friend so desperate for drugs that he settles for snorting powdered snow. Faced with these prospects, Lane opts to end it all ... until he comes up with a ridiculous plan to gain acceptance and win Beth back. Director Savage Steve Holland warps this simple, clichéd premise, letting his wacky imagination twist it into a fairly... More Info about this DVD

    Can't Buy Me Love DVD

This statement can probably best describe Patrick Dempsey currently, but those who remember him in his earlier works only associate it with "Can't Buy Me Love". Dempsey stars in the story of a nerd who buys himself popularity only to fall in too deep with his new inflated ego. With countless memorable scenes and a touching (and yes corny) ending, this movie is clearly up there as far as teen 80's flicks. Dempsey shines as the desperate Ronald Miller looking for what he believes will provide happiness. His goofy ways are ever present in the big dance where he "introduces" the school to a new dance. Amanda Peterson and Courtney Gains round out a solid cast. More Info about this DVD

License to Drive (Special Edition) DVD

The brief 1980s mania surrounding "the Coreys" peaked with License to Drive, a modest but surprisingly still enjoyable adventure comedy. Les (Corey Haim, Lucas) has a chance to date his dream girl, Mercedes (Heather Graham, Boogie Nights, in her first significant movie role)--but he's just failed his driving exam. Motivated by a mixture of pride and hormones, he steals his grandfather's Cadillac and heads out on the town with Mercedes for a night that swiftly becomes an escalating series of disasters, made worse by the foolhardy antics of Les' best friend Dean (Corey Feldman, Stand by Me). Despite some egregious '80s fashion disasters (Graham gets the worst of them), License to Drive holds up surprisingly well--it's no work of genius, but it is a solidly... More Info about this DVD

    Some Kind of Wonderful DVD

After dominating the teen-movie genre for the bulk of the 1980s, writer-producer (and sometimes director) John Hughes proved that he had at least one good movie left in him before squandering his talent on lame comedies throughout the 1990s. Like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful treated its teenaged characters like real people with real feelings, hopes, fears, and desire. Mary Stuart Masterson gives a great performance as a tomboy drummer named Watts who's secretly in love with her best friend, Keith (Eric Stoltz), an aspiring artist who is oblivious to her affection because he's got a crush on Amanda (Lea Thompson), the popular high school beauty. Watts will even go so far as to chauffeur a date for Keith and Amanda, if only to... More Info about this DVD
