  • DVD Silkwood

Based on the harrowing account of whistle blower Karen Silkwood, this 1983 film directed by Mike Nichols (The Graduate, Postcards from the Edge) is as much a character study of a woman galvanized by injustice as a story of the dangers of nuclear power and the extremes of corporate greed. When Karen discovers unsafe conditions and reckless protocol at the plant where she works, her actions in uncovering the dangers that lie at the plant not only cause a rift between her and her lover (Kurt Russell) and her best friend (Cher), but they threaten her very life. Streep gives yet another bravura performance as a wild child in Oklahoma forced to confront the harsh realities of her life, and the supporting cast, from Cher to Russell to Diana Scarwid is first rate. This true story of the woman who disappeared under mysterious circumstances while trying to find the truth is a well-told, challenging, and emotionally complex tale. --Robert Lane

    Silkwood

Whoa! I must say that this early-eighties gem caught me quite off guard. With all the trash put out today (Waiting... and Duece Bigalow: European Gigalow instantly come to mind...) I've had to resort to watching oldies such as this one during the summer and early fall months when "teen films" rule the box-office. And let me tell you, I struck gold with Silkwood.

Let me keep this short: near-all of the performances in the film are terrific (especially those by the films leads, of course). Meryl Streep is almost perfect as Karen Silkwood, a strong-willed, spontaneous nuclear worker. Cher (who knew she could act?) also does well as her lesbian roomate, and won an Oscar nod along weith Meryl for her performance. And then there's Kurt Russell, in the only good performance I've ever seen him give. The only part of the film that that seems a little off pitch is near the end when Karen is singing as she is ran off the road. I was so distracted by the singing that I couldn't concentrate on what was actually happening. But, oh well... This is still a film you shouldn't miss and an important one, also, that shows why nuclear energy might not be that good an idea.

    R, your friendly neighborhood reviewer!

AN AWESOME REAL STORY PORTRAYAL AND...

...all of the actors and actresses did a SUPER fine job!!!! This was the first movie I ever saw with Cher as an actress and I really was impressed with her acting, as I was with all the others. This is a movie that yes will bring tears BUT also makes you really think and hits the heart chords and nerves. What happened to those people in the real story is portrayed in this movie EXCELLENTLY! This is a MUST HAVE!

    Silkwood matters in our heart

How can anyone not like this early 80's gem with the star-struck Streep, a young hotshot Russell and the one & only unique Cher? ABC brought out the best acting of these original, talented actors who're not afraid to show their emotions in close-up and works especially under the lens of realist Mike Nichols.

It is also a noteworthy fact that the real life character of Karen Silkwood and her then boyfriend Drew Stephens (who served as a consultant during shooting of this film) have met up with Cher at backstage during one of her road shows in the 70's. The coincidence of Cher's later golden opportunity of receiving the part in this film from director Nichols is just so déjàvu in whole.

Despite the said event, do not miss SILKWOOD by any chance for its heartfelt story of one person's undying courage to demand justice and the special bond between friends and lovers that matter!

    Suspect DVD

Suspect is an endearingly silly suspense movie with an excellent cast. Cher stars as Washington, D.C., public defender Kathleen Riley, who is beginning to question the meaning of her career. (Before you prejudge, she's perfectly believable as a lawyer. It's the overtly Irish moniker she can't quite pull off.) A murder victim is found in the Potomac, a mute homeless man (Liam Neeson) stands accused, and Riley gets the case. Can it be that the homeless guy is innocent? Can it be that this whole thing just might go right to the top? I don't want to spoil it for you, but I think you know which way the smart money is betting. Luckily Dennis Quaid is on the scene, playing that rarest of creatures, the heroic congressional lobbyist. Suspect has a refreshingly cheerful disregard for... More Info about this DVD

    Mask (Director's Cut) DVD

Peter Bogdanovich directed this sensitive and moving story about a teenage boy, Rocky (Eric Stoltz), who lives with severe facial deformities and poor prognosis for survival beyond childhood. The film concentrates on that threshold-of-adulthood period familiar to past and present 16-year-olds, folding together common experiences of youth (love, hassles with mom, a desire to travel) with the special burdens endured by the hero. Stoltz, absolutely unrecognizable under lots and lots of prosthetic makeup, is quite good, as are Cher (as Rocky's mother) and Sam Elliott (Rocky's father figure). More than a tearjerker, the film is a genuine celebration of all that is most precious in life, even more to those who have nothing to take for granted. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

    Norma Rae DVD

Veteran director Martin Ritt (Sounder) directed this earnest and very popular tale of a naive textile worker, widow, and mother in the U.S. South who becomes empowered by standing up for her rights in the workplace. Sally Field stars in the Oscar-winning title role as a woman who has been content to go along with the status quo until she realizes that she is entitled to more and can succeed if she stands up for herself. Her fight to improve deplorable working conditions at the textile plant causes a rift between her and the people closest to her, but her determination brings a new awareness to her and to all the women with whom she works. Ritt's typical, socially conscious story uses the politics of Norma Rae's struggle and also its emotions to build the film to a rousing climax.... More Info about this DVD

The China Syndrome (Special Edition) DVD

James Bridges (Urban Cowboy, Bright Lights, Big City) directed this 1979 film that became a worldwide sensation when, just weeks after its release, the Three Mile Island nuclear accident occurred. Jane Fonda (Klute, Julia) plays a television news reporter who is not taken very seriously until a routine story at the local nuclear power plant leads her to what may be a cover-up of epic proportions. She and her cameraman, played by Michael Douglas (Wall Street, American President), hook up with a whistleblower at the plant, played by Jack Lemmon (Save the Tiger, Missing). Together they try to uncover the dangers lurking beneath the nuclear reactor and avoid being silenced by the business interests behind the plant. Though topical, the... More Info about this DVD

    The Witches of Eastwick DVD

Jack Nicholson was born to play the devil, and in George Miller's adaptation of John Updike's novel he plays it for all he's worth. As a wolfish womanizer summoned by three bored women in a picturesque New England town, he's sating all of his appetites with a rakish grin. Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer play the women who discover their untapped magical powers by accident. The smart and sexy singles, out of place in the conservatism of their village, find happiness, however briefly, in the arms and bed of the libidinous devil, but he's got his own ulterior motives. Miller revels in the sensual display of sex, food, and magic, whipping up a storm of effects that finally get out of hand in an overblown ending. It's a handsome film with strong performances all around, but the mix... More Info about this DVD
