This talent show--part Star Search, part The Gong Show, part A Chorus Line--was an instant pop-culture phenomenon, but the breakout star of this series was arguably not winner Kelly Clarkson, she of the powerhouse voice, or even runner-up Jason Guarini, he of the Sideshow Bob hair. One of the judges, record producer Simon "Prince of Darkness" Cowell, emerged as the show's villain who audiences loved to hate. Missing all the best stuff....
I am a big Idol fan who was very disappointed with the DVD. Considering this is a two disk set -- lots of storage space -- there is next to nothing on either disk.
The best part of the show are the performances and judges' critiques. We get far too few perfomances and NO judges critiques at all. Who cares about who the producers of American Idol are (incredibly one of the "extras!" on the second DVD). We want the performances. We want to relive Kelly's improvement and emergance at the top. We want to relive all the nasty comments Nicki received towards the end. Instead we're stuck with lackluster group performances (did anyone really need to hear California Dreaming again?) and finalist reactions to "you're going to Hollywood" at the auditions, but not the try-out performances that led up to those words.
Finally, there are NO performances from Big Band night, which most Idol fans agree was the most interesting night of the competition -- and the night where Kelly finally broke away from the pack.

I think American Idol is such a cool idea. We all know that we secretly wish we were on there ourselves. So for all of you people judging, think of what it took for all of the singers to get that far. They even inspired me to sing myself, I bought a voice lesson Cd off Amazon- Voice Lessons To Go by Vaccarino, and I am listening to all my favorite artists and singing all the time. A group of my friends got together for Karaoke the other night- cool place- rented the room out, and I promise you I impressed. These singers are awesome. And learning to sing myself is teaching me how hard they really do work.

In the words of Randy, this DVD, "Did it's thang dawg!" I absolutely loved it. I only have one complaint about it. First, this movie didn't show many of the performances by the singers (they don't show ANY of EJay's and Jim's performance, not even in the extra features). They should have a section of EVERY performance by all of the singers, even in the Top 30.
Overall, this DVD was absolutely amazing. Brain was extremely funny in many sections of the show. I loved that section with the judges (I think it's called "When Judges Attack."). Wonderful!
But there's one more thing, why don't they have Season 2 and Season 3???

This is the best dvd! I love Kelly Clarkson and her voice. SHe is beautiful and her vocals have far ranges. The live performances are awsome! The videos are cool! In my opinion LOw was the best but they were all great. Don't listen to anybody else unless hey say BUY THIS DVD!!!!!!!! I hope Kely has more live performances and a dvd for BReakaway album too cuz it's awasome too. I don't have cable, so I hadn't been able to see the videos. Of course, I rushed out to buy the DVD as soon as it was released. I'm glad I bought it, but honestly I was a little disappointed. I thought the quality of the DVD was a little cheap, and it should have had some extras on it. Also, they way that Kelly was made up in the videos - it just really didn't look like her. She's very beautiful, and doesn't need all of that fake coloring. Also, her lipgloss made for a rather blinding glare at times.
I do have to say that I thought that the "A Moment Like This" video, while a little cheesy, was kind-of cool how it showed snips from the American Idol competition. However, there really wasn't enough in my opinion. They only had a few clips, and unless you really watched the whole season,...
