DVD The Land Before Time (Anniversary Edition)
This 1988 animated feature from Don Bluth (An American Tail) focuses on an orphaned young dinosaur, Littlefoot, who has to make his way to the paradise of the Great Valley in order to survive a plague. Along the way, he meets up with some other dinos from different species, and they all bond and travel together. On the way, they have plenty of adventures. Even with elements of suspense, this is a pretty relaxed movie that isn't in a particular hurry to roll out its story. Kids will like the originality of the concept, and the themes of friendship and cooperation are well woven into the fabric of the entertainment, plus the music is great. Bluth's artwork looks good, though--as always--he never seems to quite catch up with the quality of the Disney machine. --Tom Keogh
Review(s): DVD The Land Before Time (Anniversary Edition)
Worst digital transfer I've ever seen.
I'm absolutely baffled why any studio would let such a poor digitally transferred movie ever see the light of day on DVD. It's REALLY BAD.
My advice, don't buy. Force the studio to redo this DVD. Don't settle for such terrible quality.
The Land Before Time (Anniversary Edition)
I bought this movie for my niece. She loved it. I would recommend it to any parent that has a young child. The story line teaches them to be kind to others and how to share. It is a wonderful movie.
A fun and emotional movie but a superficial DVD release
This is one of my favorite childhood movies. I was really eager to get it on DVD, especially when I heard about the Anniversary Edition release. What's my conclusion, after buying this disc? The people at Universal should really take a few notes from Disney, when preparing an animated movie DVD. Land Before Time is displayed in its (apparently) original format, 1.33:1. Good. It looks like the picture has had a little restoration work done, with higher contrast and brighter colors. This kind of restoration should always be handled with great care, otherwise the result can look like it does on this disc: the picture suffers a great deal from the so-called Temporal Noise Reduction artifacts. Grain feels at home here, and the thicker lines crawl when characters are moving (the Tyrannosaurus' first attack scene is quite relevant). The sound mix - both the DD and DTS - sounds quite good, the dialog is clear and James Horner's beautiful music sounds wonderful. As expected, the mix is spread across the front channels, the surrounds never getting much action. What I really dislike about animated movie DVD releases is that, most of the time, they are targeted at very young kids. I guess it's much cheaper for the studios, children never having real needs for special features. All it takes is colorful menus and packaging, and they're set. I would have really enjoyed some kind of documentary on the making of the movie, this being labeled an "Anniversary Edition". Instead, all we get are games and kiddy stuff. Well, I'm not sure children are really fond of DVD games, but I guess a game or two is better than no extra features at all. Anyway, to sum it all up, I'm really glad I own this movie on DVD. Image issues and lack of interesting bonus features aside, this is the best presentation of the movie so far, so if you like The Land Before Time, you don't really have a choice but to buy this DVD and enjoy this wonderful movie.

Young brontosaurus Littlefoot and his pals venture out of the Great Valley into the Mysterious Beyond and encounter a T-rex and a pair of omnivores who just want to be friendly. (Gulp.) The gang learns how hard it is to be a kid on one's own in a scary place--what with landslides and ferocious "sharptooths." This first sequel to The Land Before Time mostly holds up the visual quality of Don Bluth's original, though the story is narrower and less interesting. Dreams--or "sleep stories," as these talking dinosaurs dub them--inspire Little Foot and his grandparents to begin a journey to see a climactic event in the 10th installment of this consistently high-quality series. Along the way, they discover that other longnecks have been having similar dreams, thus providing the opportunity for guest voices (Bernadette Peters as "Sue" and James Garner as "Pat") and Little Foot's reunion with his long-lost father (voiced by Kiefer Sutherland). In a subplot, Little Foot's other dino friends decide to follow him, but this story really belongs to the young longneck. He gets to view a solar eclipse--and take credit for saving his species--but has to make a decision between traveling with his newfound dad and returning with the grandparents who raised him.... This direct-to-video sequel (the second) to The Land Before Time suffers from less ambitious animation, but the story is superior to the last film. This time, a meteorite has cut off the water supply to the Great Valley, causing inhabitants to bicker and bully among themselves. By contrast, Littlefoot and his friends are getting along just fine, and they leave the valley to go in search of a new water source. Dinosaurs come alive like never before in this costly computer-animated film from Disney. After a breathtaking opening (a dino egg is kidnapped), the film changes style; realistic dinosaurs are given human characteristics and voices. The kidnapped egg grows into an iguanodon named Aladar (voiced by D.B. Sweeney), who is raised by lemurs (shades of Tarzan) on a lush island void of other dinosaurs. When a meteorite destroys their island home in a thrilling sequence, the lemur family and Aladar become part of a dinosaur troop roaming the mainland deserts looking for the lush nesting grounds (shades of the fourth installment of the Land Before Time series and Fantasia). Disney's usual mix of modern language (one lemur calls himself "a love monkey") is present, as is its... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): D.B. Sweeney - Samuel E. In this ninth installment in The Land Before Time series, a cast of spirited, young dinosaurs explores the familiar emotion of loneliness and the need to belong.
