Review(s): DVD Child Development: The First Two Years
Key Ingredients...Information, Compassion and Humor
With the many obligations in parents' daily lives, plus so many short- and long-term decisions to make, moms and dads can become confused, short-tempered, and completely stessed out. And that leads to feelings of anxiety, guilt and incompetence. This DVD Video Guide is supportive and informative without talking down to you and helped give me the confidence I was looking for to face some of the common challenges that arise in the first 2 years. The information is clearly presented and is organized into the following developmental periods: 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months and 12-24 months. For the next age group...toddlers-preschoolers (ages 2, 3, 4 and 5), I highly recommend a small pocket guide called THE POCKET PARENT offering hundreds of sanity saving suggestions to try. Set up as a quick-read A-Z guide...it covers every challenging behavior you can think of such as anger, bad words, biting, hitting, the gimmes, morning crazies, tantrums, bedtime and mealtime refusals, separation anxiety and whining. CHILD DEVELOPMENT: The First 2 Years and THE POCKET PARENT are supportive easy reference guides for the home or daycare setting to revisit again and again.

True, this isn't a series for parents looking for advice (as one of the previous reviewers critiqued), but this is MY FAVORITE baby show and I am very glad that I can ditch my tapes now that it is out on DVD. There are a great many more episodes than those listed on this single DVD-- let's hope that this disk is profitable enough so that they decide to sell them all!
The episodes present classic psyc. experiments of developmental perception that are simply facinating. If you are taking an intro. to psycology course and all the dry textbook descriptions are putting you to sleep, get this DVD! Actually looking at the sweet little guys go through the set-ups will help you remember the different cognitive stages. They are just too cute! and it is neat to see what "tricks" you can... Our family has the video version of this DVD. Here is the review for it:
Overall, this video is absolutely excellent for any mother who wants to learn the basics of Baby care. It devotes a reasonable amount of time to breastfeeding, and does show a lot of actual breastfeeding footage (which many feel is inappropriate for husbands and children to see).
The only real problem with the video are the scare tactics that they use to promote vaccinations, such as children in the hospital. The vaccine section bothers me, not only because of the scare tactics, but also because everyone in the whole video appears to be rich, EXCEPT for the parents of the children in the vaccination portion, which appeared to be very poor. I would recommend that parents read the book Vaccination: The... Dr. Karp applied common sense to the "problem" of crying babies that most new parents face, by borrowing from traditions being used around the world to calm babies down as if you had "flipped a switch." He acknowledges the existence of a 'fourth trimester', i.e. the first three months of the baby's life and the need to use techniques to make the baby feel as in the mother's womb to calm him/her down, appealing to their calm reflex.
These techniques are summarized as the five S's: Swaddling (very tight, to resemble the tight environment of the uterus), Side or Stomach position (otherwise known as the football hold), Shushing (as loud as the baby cries), Swinging (making the head jiggle slightly, to replicate the mom's movements with the baby in her tummy) and Sucking (with your finger,... It's broken down into simple segments and very easy to follow. Watching it gave me a real sense of how long a bath might take, etc. If you don't know much and are considering this DVD, then it will probably be perfect for you. If you already know how to take care of a baby, and need some reminders, then you might do better asking around or looking online for refreshers. We weren't blown away. I'm not going to start whining in public like my toddler does and I don't think he should be led to believe that it is ok to do. We do try to sympathise with him but not to that degree. The dr. seem a bit strange as well. More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 02 November 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours
