DVD Fairy Tale - A True Story
When her father is declared missing in action during World War I, Elsie Wrigth (Florence Hoath) goes to live in England with her cousin Frances Griffiths (Elizabeth Earl) for whom the topic of fairies is forbidden. Immediately, the girls discover the winged creatures in the garden and photograph them for Frances's startled parents. This leads to another kind of adventure for the girls. They become the toasts of London as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Peter O'Toole) and Harry Houdini (Harvey Keitel), who have seen the photographs, escort them around town. Mildly villainous reporters chase the girls and curious spectators invade their garden after the pictures are printed publicly.
Although fairies are the visible subjects, the enchanting video is really about faith. Frances's parents (Phoebe Nicholls and Paul McGann) recently lost their son, Joseph, who had originally discovered the fairies and would like to think he may be an angel. Sir Arthur also lost his son and is courted by clairvoyants who claim they can talk to the boy. Elsie waits patiently for her father to come home, although it appears hopeless that he will. Harry Houdini is an illusionist but acts against the fraudulent claims of greedy mediums and the like. They are all touched by a need to truly believe in what remains hidden. The story is very loosely based on an early 20th-century controversy involving the real Frances and Elsie who faked pictures of fairies similar to the ones in the video. The real girls never confessed, but the video suggests the manner in which the real life photos may have been produced. --Margaret Griffis
I love this film. It portrays fairies as I remember them as a child. I taught my daughter all about them when she was small and we have always enjoyed them. Now my daughter is expecting a girl any day now and I showed her this film. She was enchanted and I'm sure my new granddaughter will love it as well. It's based on a true story and gives all the clues as to how they produced the photographs without making it so clear as to disallusion small children. We look forward to showing it to her along with Finding Neverland. The fairies are beautiful and convincing. It's a charming film.
Fairy Tale - A True Story
Fantastic story of fairies at the bottom of the garden, found by two girls. A good family film, and a must for those who believe.
Wonderful and Nostalgic ! Kids will love it !!!
I just loved this movie. The two little actresses in this film are the best I've seen in many years. It is great for all ages and genders. Although, children under three might ask questions regarding the reality of the fairies. The fairies look unbelievably REAL!
This movie really makes one understand the wonder, magic, and innocence of a child's spirit. It was not pretentious nor assuming, in fact it was the complete opposite of what I thought it would be. I was glued to the t.v. throughout and watched it four times in a week.
The cinematography is beautiful and spell-binding, the concepts are clean and introspective. It was very well written, directed and acted. It has historical value as well as moral value. This movie will truely be a classic as "The Wizard of Oz" was in its day.
Filmmaker John Walker has done all of us a big favor, believers and non-believers alike, in presenting us with this wonderfully charming and informative documentary on the 'Kingdom of Fairy.'
John's journey of discovery begins in Nova Scotia, Canada, a place not too unfamiliar to me having spent several summer vacations with my maternal Grandparents and extended family in and around the Isle of Newfoundland. While in Nova Scotia he takes part in a discussion with a classroom of local first graders on the topic of the elusive nature of the fairy phenomenon and the difficulty adults have in seeing them, a problem not as prevalent in children.
Soon John is off to England, Ireland, Scotland and Cape Breton in search of the 'wee folk,' documenting a wonderous array of... More Info about this DVD Director(s): John Walker (II) DVD Release Date: Released the 21 August 2001 Usually ships in 24 hours

Filmed before (and quite nicely) in 1949, Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story was remade for this admirable 1993 release, executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Splendidly adapted by Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson, the film opens in India during the early 1900s, when young Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is orphaned and sent to England to live in Misselthwaite Manor, the gloomy estate of her brooding and melancholy uncle, Lord Craven (John Lynch). Because the uncle is almost always away on travels, struggling to forget the death of his beloved wife, Mary is left mostly alone to explore the estate. Eventually she befriends the young brother of a staff maid and Lord Craven's apparently... After the critical success of 1993's The Secret Garden, Warner Bros. returned to the novels of Frances Hodgson Burnett to create this 1995 adaptation of A Little Princess, which instantly ranked with The Secret Garden as one of the finest children's films of the 1990s. Neither film was a huge box-office success, but their quality speaks for itself, and A Little Princess has all the ingredients of a timeless classic. A marvel of production design, the film features lavish sets built almost entirely on a studio backlot in Burbank, California. The story opens in New York just before the outbreak of World War I, when young Sara (Liesel Matthews) is enrolled in private boarding school while her father goes off to war. Under the domineering scrutiny of the school's... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Alfonso Cuarón DVD Release Date: Released the 19 November 1997 Usually ships in 24 hours

Just as seashells house the sound and spirit of the sea, so too the forest houses the sound and spirit of the legendary fairies. A 1997 Parents' Choice Gold Award winner, Kristen's Fairy House takes its viewers on a quiet journey of many unexpected discoveries. Young Kristen ventures into the peaceful surroundings of an island off the coast of Maine with her talented Aunt Tracy, a storybook artist. Together they explore a wonderful woodsy land dedicated to the creation of fairy houses. As the week--and Kristen's own fairy house project--progresses, the two share simple moments of heartwarming pleasure: a cozy campfire, a breakfast of blueberry pancakes, a late-night waltz in their quaint cottage. The entire movie is shot as a documentary, narrated in retrospective prose... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 04 May 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

This is a tale about a family that moves to the Isle of Man. After meeting a grumpy old caretaker, they move in to their 'country-ish' cottage in the lush woods. The two children befriend a fairy, while their father finds information at the local library that informs him that there is a gold mine under the creek that runs through their property. The crochety old caretaker warns them that if they open up the closed mine "demons will be comin' to get yer." While they decide to open the mine anyway, their ailing father finds he has 3 months to live. The fairies, sensing his illness, heal him, and then there comes a dilemma: Are the beings in the mine goblins, (rogue fairies), or really a lost breed of the wee folk?
This heartwarming tale really is a great movie. The makeup for the fairies... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Paul Matthews (II) DVD Release Date: Released the 23 October 2001 Usually ships within 24 hours
