Here Comes Cookie / Love in Bloom / Six of a Kind DVD

Three features (just over an hour each), showcase the well-honed comic patter of George Burns and Gracie Allen during the busiest time in their movie career, the mid-1930s. Gracie's dingbat malapropisms were so perfectly straightforward ("I really shouldn't drink coffee in the morning; it keeps me awake all day"), and Burns's straight-man timing so unerring, the pair was often funnier than their material. They road-trip west in Leo McCarey's amusing Six of a Kind, which is actually at its best when W.C. Fields is polishing one of his pool-playing routines. Love in Bloom casts George and Gracie as carnival folk, in support of a sappy plot of young lovers in New York. They top-line in Here Comes Cookie, which has some nice screwball-among-the-rich energy. The Burns and... More Info about this DVD

Reel Values TV Classics, Vol. 7 (The Burns & Allen Show / Blondie) DVD

I had never seen either of these television shows, but I was a fan of George Burns' and have been fortunate enough to hear old radio broadcasts of Burns and Allen at work as a team, so I was excited to get the chance to see recordings of their show. Unfortunately, even the outlandish repartee between George Burns and Gracie Allen could not save this DVD.

There are three episodes of the Burns and Allen Show and three episodes of Blondie on the DVD. From the menu, you can select the episode of your choice, or choose to watch the episodes of one or the other show in order. There are no extra features.

Neither show was much more than an overblown commercial for evaporated milk. Seriously. Each episode might consist of 5 minutes of total talk time that did not make mention of the grand... More Info about this DVD

    1950s TV's Greatest Comedies DVD

If you're a connoisseur of the golden age of television comedy, you'll find this DVD collection to be an overall satisfying experience. In not including the Honeymooners or I Love Lucy, one could call it the best of the rest. The Jack Benny Program showcases the talent and personality of Liberace while Jack hams it up with the violin. The Burns and Allen Show highlights the underrated comedic genius of Grace Allen as she verbally spars with the tax man. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet won't give you any belly aches as Ozzie goes on a diet, but it best reflect the naiveté and idealized 1950s notion of the perfect American family. The Red Skelton Show proves that comedy is high art as Red plays a diploma mill trained dentist. Eight other shows round out the collection. Some... More Info about this DVD
