"Roar" is a film I got a lot of enjoyment out of as a child and watching it as an adult was as entertaining as ever. What catches my attention this time round is the danger that the cast were putting themselves in working with these animals. Any film that attempts this type of drama should certainly be remembered a bit more than "Roar" has. Since details on this dvd are so difficult to find on the web, I'd like to tell you what "Roar" has. First of all, the widescreen is good in that it shows the film as it should be viewed but it's not 16:9 for widescreen tv's. However the picture is quite strong anyway for zoom. The short interviews are decent enough but one must wonder that there's got to be a great documentary somewhere on this 11 years of film making. Probably more engaging than the film itself. The sound is not 5.1 but stereo surround as it was originally. Now I could be wrong here but I'm sure this film is cut. Within the first 15 minutes I'm sure there was a scene with Tippi Hedren and her kids discussing how they gave the husband/father the wrong arrival time and another bit with the two sons having an argument which lead to a fight. One of the sons trys karate on his brother. These two scenes are missing from my dvd. On top of that I'm sure at 84 minutes this dvd goes for is way too short from what I remember of seeing this film on video. Without that first scene the film doesn't make sense. We don't know my Noel Marshall thinks his family arrives later that night. If I'm totally delusional here please correct me. It's not a major disapointment. I've had worse and I'll get over it quick enough. "Roar" is a definitely worth a look.
AMAZING!
I first saw this movie at a young age and loved it! I have grown up with this movie and have never grown tired of it. I am amazed by the interaction between this crazy family and the hundreds of wild animals. Not only is this one of my favorite movies of ALL TIME, but my friends all love it too. There have been numerous times where we vote to stay home and watch Roar for the 30 millionth time rather than go out and see whatever new movie has come out that particular week. P.S. My favorite part is where John hides from the lions in the water barrel!
Most amazing movie with Big Cats I've ever seen.
I saw this movie in the theatres when it was release here in England. I heard it was never released in America, which is a shame. I've never seen animals interacting with people in such close proximity and SO MANY at one time! I bought the movie on DVD from the roar website earlier this year and have watched it at least once a month. My 3 kids watch it with their friends even more than me and my wife.
I saw the "interviews" , but would love to see even more. Hopefully, they will do a whole DVD on just how they made this film. I heard nobody died, but I read that over 70 people were injured, some very seriously, during the filming. I read that Jan De Bont, now a big Hollywood director, got hurt the worst. This film makes Seigfreid and Roy's group of animals look small by comparison. You won't believe what these people survived! Truly AMAZING!
South African director Jamie Uys caught lightning in a bottle with The Gods Must Be Crazy--a Coke bottle, to be specific. This slaphappy collection of goofy pratfalls and culture-clash gags became an enormous international smash, and made a sort of star out of the Bushman selected to play the central role, the completely ingratiating N!Xau. He plays a man, unaware of white culture, who finds a Coca-Cola bottle in the Kalahari (dropped by a passing pilot) and promptly has his life turned around by this mystical object. The movie looks slipshod and even amateurish at times, yet its attitude is so bubbly it's hard to resist. Proving that physical comedy remains a true international language, millions of moviegoers around the world drank it up.

Storytelling doesn't get much purer than this--a film with virtually no dialogue and not a minute that isn't fascinating, either for the plot it pursues or the way director Jean-Jacques Annaud gets his ursine stars to do what he wants. The story deals with a young cub who, after his mother is killed in a landslide, bonds to a lumbering male Kodiak. The two of them then must cope with an invasion of hunters into their territory--and Annaud makes it clear whose side he's on. I first watched this movie when I was a young girl. I have watched this movie at least 20 times and I am now purchasing the DVD for my grandkids.
This movie does not have the Hollywood glam that can ruin a movie. I cry each time I watch this movie and I am still moved by the story line. Anthony Quinn and James Coburn are at their bests. People who do not like this movie are usually too young to remember when movies were made without special effects and the scripts had to carry the movie, this script does that very well.
