real basic feel good movie.
Dan Heller is a 1st round 1990 QB Bust, who was drafted i think by the Eagles, who gave up 2 first rounders to get him, which turned out to be Junior Seau and Emmitt Smith.
John Viot is the head coach of the Buffalo Bills now, and has just made the playoffs with Doug Flutie at the helm. After they beat the Giants and make the playoffs, Viot wants to pick up a QB with a big arm to get the team ready for the playoffs.
because they can only sign one player a week during the playoffs, they get Heller, a not so good Insurance broker.
He signs with the Bills even though they doesn't want to, and the whole time, his wife Teri Pollo (Meet the Parents), is supportive and behind him.
and just by coincidence, the entire Buffalo Bills staring offense gets a stomach virus after eating oysters to celebrate making the playoffs.
so in steps Heller and the second string offense to lead Buffalo into the Super Bowl.
they get lucky against San Diego on a punt return for a TD, then go out and beat Miami for the title game to play Minnesota for the Super Bowl. and you can guess what happens at the end...
the movie is EXTREMELY corny, but also funny. its got some good stuff, like Heller's locker room speech after the title game, and some pretty neat football footage including real football clips from the Bills.
what is also cool is that for the shots at Reich Stadium, home of the Bills, they shot that stuff indoors in a smaller football field that is made to look like the real Bills stadium, like the scaled down Alamo in Disney's Davy Crockett.
overall, Second String is a good movie, but it is nowhere near The Replacements, Any Given Sunday, Remember the Titans, or Necessary Roughness. Like someone said, honestly, Little Giants was better than Second String.
Go Figure...
The title of this movie perfectly describes the acting. Even The Little Giants had better actors than this, and those kids were only like 4 or 5 years old. Ok, so they were probably 12...that's not the point. Second String tries to use those inspiring lines that all football movies have (you know, the ones meant to give you goose bumps), but they don't succeed at all. In fact, they fail with flying colors. When I first saw this movie, I decided that I'd rather be the sunblock boy at a senior citizen's nude beach than watch it again. Needless to say, I haven't seen it since.
this movie was great.
I originally caught this movie on TNT in the middle of the night. What a sleeper. I was so happy when it came out on DVD. If you liked The Replacements or Any Given Sunday, you will love this movie. The ending is very predictable, but it is fun to watch.
The first time I saw this movie was on Lifetime TV and I almost changed the channel, but something about the description of the movie caught my eye. Its hard to describe the movie without giving away the full plot, but I love how its set out. Its well worth getting, and it will probably be back on TV pretty soon. Sports documentaries don't get any better than The Last Game, which seems likely to remain the greatest film ever made about the undiluted thrill of high school football. You couldn't write a Hollywood script better than this riveting, real-life celebration of Central Bucks West--the reigning champions of Pennsylvania high school football--and the team's passionate hard-ass coach of 32 years, Mike Pettine Sr. The year is 1999, and as CB West storms its way toward an astonishing, undefeated three-season record of 45-0, we witness the many facets of an unfolding drama: star fullback Dustin Picciotti rises to prominence with an abundance of cocky self-assurance; former CB West player-turned-rival coach Mike Pettine Jr. prepares to battle his father's team in a crucial game; and... I have been waiting for this movie ever since I saw the trailer for it on the A Walk To Remember VHS (I OWN THE DVD THOUGH!). I forgot about it up until today, and then I looked in my video store and they only have about 1 copy total of this movie on video (they don't have the DVD for some reason). I rented the movie and I finally watched it. I was disappointed though, I don't know why though. It had a great message and story to it. It was slightly similar to "Remember The Titans" and kind of had a "Waterboy" feeling to it w/out all the crude humor and language. This film is a great one though. I will eventually own the DVD which will have a WIDESCREEN presentation, and some good 5.1 Surround. The VHS wasn't bad though. This is rated PG by the MPAA for Language (there was only one really... Director Robert Aldrich had a knack for depicting outsiders with originality and authenticity. Much like The Dirty Dozen, The Longest Yard is a popular fable about integrity and group unity. It possesses a requisite toughness along with the loneliness that accompanies the outsider status. Compromise is never easy in an Aldrich film. There's always a bitter price to pay.
Burt Reynolds, in peak form, plays a former pro quarterback ostracized for shaving points. After beating up his girlfriend and resisting arrest, Reynolds winds up in prison, where he's taunted by warden Eddie Albert to help his semiprofessional team of guardsmen win a championship. Naturally, the inmates despise Reynolds, and naturally he redeems himself in one of the great movie football matches of all...
