DVD Anne of Green Gables - The Continuing Story
In a departure from L.M. Montgomery's book series, this third TV movie jumps ahead to World War I and puts Anne and her beloved Gilbert smack in the middle of it. Instead of marrying Gilbert after her teaching days--as she does in the books--Anne spends a disillusioning year with him in New York City, and then the couple quickly marries before the good doctor ships out to France. (In the book Rilla of Ingleside, Anne's sons go to war and her youngest daughter is separated from her sweetheart.) Impetuous as ever, Anne joins the Red Cross and crosses the pond to track down her husband when his letters are returned unread. What follows is an adventure that takes her through battle zones--where the bodies pile up faster than you can say Saving Private Ryan--and on to London with a half-orphaned baby, her best friend's injured husband, and a tangle of international intrigue. Fans of the 10-book series may balk at the divergences and the fact that very little time is spent on Prince Edward Island. But the book's unrestrained romanticism and unapologetic sentimentality remain intact, as well as the surviving cast of the prior two movies, most notably Megan Follows as Anne and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert. This movie, produced in 2000, clocks in at 185 minutes and is suitable for ages 9 and older. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Review(s): DVD Anne of Green Gables - The Continuing Story
worth missing
Unfortunately I saw this movie on the shelf and just grabbed it up, thinking it would be just as heartwarming as the other two. WRONG! The acting is terrible and the story is depressing. Not recomended at all!
awful...dreadful...disappointing...
...and I have never read the books - this mess is inexcusable and should never have been made. The 'plot' is incredibly unbelievable, the worst sort of cliche melodrama, and the virtues that were so evidenced and detailed in the earlier films are swamped under. This is one movie you can afford to miss - I can think of nothing good to say about it.
BIG Disappointment
"Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story" is a huge disappointment. This continuing story, sequel or whatever you want to call it should never have been made. Megan Follows' performance as Anne Shirley is horrible. This is not the Anne I remember from "Anne of the Green Gables" I am sorry to say. Her face and voice have changed radically. Megan Follows really did not age well. Her voice sounds like she's a "two-pack-a-day" smoker. It really is sad. As for the actual story I can only say that it borders on the ridiculous and ludicrous and reeks with mediocrity. The World War I sequences are foolish and laughable. The several coincidences that occur throughout this story are beyond all credibility. Sequels like this often destroy the original. I hope this does not affect "Anne of the Green Gables." "Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story" will be an eternal disappointment for many of us who loved Megan Follows in the original.

Anne of Avonlea, also called Anne of Green Gables the Sequel is a wonderful movie and just as good as the first movie! In this movie Anne leaves home to take a job teaching English to some snotty rich girls who give her a hard time but she soon wins them over and soon Morgan Harris the father of one of her students falls for Anne and courts her. The father played by Frank Converse is quite a bit older then Anne and my aunt kept rooting for him but having read the books and knowing who Anne's true love is I of course rooted for her beloved Gilbert. Megan Follows once again gave a wonderful performance as Anne and I highly recommend this movie and also the first movie. The only movie in this series that I was disappointed in was the third movie the Continuing story but the first two movies... This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her," answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative... This DVD included the first two episodes of "Road to Avonlea" the TV series, or better known in the U.S. as "Avonlea", as aired on the Disney Channel in the 1990's. A touching and family-friendly series about a little rich girl who moves to Prince Edward Island to live with her relatives when her father is accused of embezzlement in his own company. The adventures that this little girl Sara Stanley has with her cousins, (the "King" family) are hilarious and heart-warming! This is definately worth checking out!! A lot of reviewers gave bad reviews of this movie thinking it was the dreadful third movie The Continuing Story when it's really the delightful second movie, in Canada it's called Anne of Green Gables the Sequel while in the USA it's Anne of Avonlea and I believe when it was first shown on TV in the USA it was called Anne of Green Gables the Sequel but for some reason they changed the title in the USA. I believe that the confusion of reviewers with Anne of Green Gables the Sequel and Anne Of Green Gables The Continuing Story was because Amazon by mistake or computer glitch had shown the cover for and description for The Continuing Story under the title Anne of Green Gables the Sequel but I see that Amazon has since discovered and fixed that mistake. Anyway Anne of Green Gables/Anne of... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Stefan Scaini DVD Release Date: Released the 14 September 2001 This item is currently not available.
